But A6s don't break, apart from a battery and tyres I have replaced only the side repeater lens in 7 years and that cost 5 quid

One swallow doesn't make a summer, my friend's A6 last service came up with £2000 worth of faults. Quite a lot for £3000 worth of car.

Hence my point about finding a friendly garage who can help you sort through the vital repairs against the 'nice to have' ones

Hi all,

This is sort of a follow on question to my XM or Xantia question. Please let me know your thoughts on this, how do these engine compare in real life not just the manufacturers specs. I realise that these engines were/are also used in the 406 and so owners of these could perhaps answer this question also. I'm used to a 1.9TD in a 405 estate but I've heard some owners complain that the HDi 90 lacks the punch of the old XUD. Is this just a perception because there's less turbo lag or what? How does the 2.1 TD compare to a 110 HDi?

Thanks.

Thanks for the opinions and info. I'm just waiting to see if my 405's wrote off following a rear end shunt.

Hi can anyone help me i own a vw passat tdi year 2000, problem is i have never had a car before i cant service myself i always do all my own brakes, services etc.
Does anyone know what oil i can use in my car the vw recomended oils are to expensive, i am aware this model is a long life service vehicle, but do not do very high mileages so would be willing to change my oil once or twice within a 12 month period so buying long life oil will not serve me any perpose.
can i purchase oils for this vehicle from regular motor accessories shop or do i have to go to my local dealer.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers mikemate Read more

Yep you get what you pay for.

The qulaity of the oil is determined by the quality spec not the label with the name thats advertised most!

Don't worry about brand, look for the quality you need. If unsure how to sort it just go to your local motor factor or car shop and give them the info from your handbook and they will provide.

My sons Mondeo (its a y reg new shape one) has a problem with the heater.

If the blower is either not on or on the lowest setting, the temperature control works fine. If the blower speed is set above minimum, it begins to blow hot air out after a few seconds even though the temperature is set to cold. The air conditioning also works fine, until it the blower speed is increased. It seems to be directly related to the blower speed as turning the blower off will allow cool air through again.

We've a shared drive and for the first time in 16 years our neighbour just rubbed against the front bumber of my wife's Focus whilst backing down. Too small for a garage/insurance job but I think too deep to T-cut out. I've searched this site for the repairers but I'm sure there are variations even in the national chains. Can anybody recommend any in the Wakefield/Leeds area? Thanks Read more

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I know a bodyshop who does a good job but they're too busy to be really interested in the very minor stuff, more a full rub down and respray place. I might give the ChipsAway chaps a call.

www.cap.co.uk/

It's available by subscription only. The sellers on Ebay are breaking both Ebay and CAP rules by selling old issues.

There are a few other motoring forums where people sell off last months issues in the classified sections. If you're going to be using it regularly, then you could subscribe, there's a form on the CAP website. It costs £285 a year, so equivalent to £23.75 a copy.

How far behind are JD power surveys? We (business) have bought 3 new Lexus IS in the last few months Two of them have developed rattles that required the dash to be reomved to be cured. A major job I am told. Other rattles also required removal of the B pillars and re padding MAny other similar complaints of this nature are on the Lexus forums. Going by this they do not deserve the top spot in the JD power survey for 2006 . When will all these problems be reflected in their rating and warn other buyers..dont beleive everything you read!!!!

I think the cars are usually at least 12 months old so we should see these problems manifest in the surveys in about 12 months time.
There have been a number of BR's that have complained of rattly Lexus and Toyotas.
My wife's Corolla rattles really badly in the dash and rear seat/parcel shelf area. I have told her we have bought our first and last Toyota. It has been into the dealer at 3 times to get it fixed.
She is having a Jazz next.

Whats the opinion these days on towing a vehicle with an automatic transmision.Yaers ago it was advised to disconnect the prop shaft, not eay with a front wheel drive. The reason I ask is a friend who has a Rover ?? auto needs to get it to a garage to fix head gasket (K series engine)the garage said they would tow it.They do know its an automatic by the way.

If you're really stuck then 30 miles at no more than 30mph was the Borg Warner rule of thumb, but drive wheels off the ground is safest, or on a low-loader recovery truck.
