Morning all,
The Astra has blotted its copybook by developing an alarm problem.
After a run with the aircon on, when the car is subsequently parked up the alarm goes off after a few minutes.
I had this problem last summer, and traced it (I thought) to the recirculation button on the ventilation being on. Ensuring it was parked with the recirc off solved the problem.
This year though it has started to go off regardless of the recirc setting.
I can get round the problem by leaving a window slightly open - but Mrs B has a habit of forgetting to do this, leading to alarm blaring, angry neighbours etc etc.
Could it have something to do with the pressure sensor being triggered inside the car? Is there anything I can do to ´desensitize´ it?
Thanks in advance,
barchettaman

Hi,
I have been informed by the man who does the M.O.T's that the big end is going in the engine. I understand I think what it is.
The M.O.T man said as long as I do not go over 60 mph it will last me until the next M.O.T
( he assumes I am only going to keep the car for 12 months )
My question is , is it expensive to fix. The M.O.T man is he correct in what he says.
Thankyou sorry to be a pain. Read more
>>but i think the 8v block and head haven't changed that
much over the years
While that's true in general appearance, I'm not sure things are
quite as simple as that.
If it's a 16SH engine, then that 1600 engine size in
form, shape and layout ended with the mkII. Mk III
Cav 1.6 engines were 16SV, which were a lot smaller, and
based on the old 1300 block, rather than sharing parts with
the 16SH. Derivatives of the 16SV, have all been similar,
right up the current Z16SE.

I stand corrected, i had a quick look at a 2002 astra 8v SPi and thought that looks familiure, without going into too much detail, i think the daweoo suggestion is a bum steer too as IIRC they only use the 16v unit, for emmisions reasons.
In slow moving traffic this morning I was passed by a car with blue flashing lights on the roof and sounding a siren. The police? A doctor?
Somehow I doubt it. The vehicle was a K reg Shogun, blowing out clouds of filthy black smoke. The siren was was not the normal sound for our area, and the driver turned it off as soon as he passed the queue I was in. Can you but blue lights and sirens on ebay these days? Read more
Wern't in South Manchester were you Wally?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I put before you a case involving the tussle today between a Landy and a Caddy. The case involves me (Caddy driver) going round a roundabout for the third exit. Right indicator going and then left going after second exit.
Notice a grey Landy in my side mirror coming from second exit and also indicating left and accelerating hard. Bit dangerous for me to squeeze across in front, so I take the outside lane of third exit - a short sliproad to motorway. Ok so far you say. All's great. I accelerate to try to match the speed of the motorway traffic.
Landy man tries to undertake on the left. Fair enough, let him blast on ahead if his motor's got the grunt - but a little dangerous as we're near the bottom of the sliproad! He draws a little closer in the left lane, but can't seem to get past me. I'm not accelerating now as I can see the left lane is clear. Suddenly he's all lights, hands, the lot! What's he want me to do? I cannot now pull over to the left and he's been tight behind me all the way down! He then floors it and tries to get in front of me at the sliproad/motorway junction. I slow for both our sakes, but again he seems hesitant..!
Why can drivers not wait just another five or ten seconds. Or is it just a Landy-man thing!!? I feel that the Caddy can win the case. I was sensitive and tried to do the decent thing and let him pass. Any one disagree - am I missing something? Read more
Discos, Freelander I forgot they were also Landies !
Passive danger of any sort does tend to make you have a particular view of the world drivingwise, also on any vintage of Defender you're also aware that all the bits only stay together in one package because of the way you treat them.
So I get a quote online and they phone me to confirm it's all ok.
Then I get the policy details and they have made the following Errors.
1. Engine Size
2. DOB
3. Date Passed Test
So they charge me £30 to amend the details and £60 more as they had a smaller Engine for my Reg No. !.
I'm screwed as I have paid £70 deposit.
Who can I complain to ?
Is there an Insuracne Ombudsman ? Read more
The IO is for "When all else fails" you'll have to try it out with the company first.
Right my mother in law is 70 at the beginning of July. Her 1993 Metro is close to expiry and her children (including my wife) want to club in £1250 each to buy her a new car. She lives in Farnham, has a small garage and only uses the car around town with an occassional run up to Oxford. Max mileage 4000 per year. She has never had a new car and the family would like to get her something reliable and with PAS. Any ideas? Thanks Read more

What dealerships are in the Farnham area?
At that mileage it would only be a yearly event for ROUTINE service but if any problems occur then a local dealer is a bonus.
As I commented on another thread my nearest Fiat dealer to Kingston is a long way. a
Hi all!
Can anyone please lead me in the right direction for good deals on a new catalytic converter for a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v (02 reg)?
Our local Skoda dealer has quoted a whopping £690 for a 'supply and fit'. Sounds more than a little steep to me!!!
Many thanks, in advance! Read more
I guess the car is about 12 months out of warranty? Did you buy it new? Whats the mileage? If you are the original owner and the mileage is lowish then you may get a goodwill gesture from Skoda if you ask. A colleague had a cat fail on an Audi A4 - 4 years old, 75K. Expressed his iritation at main dealer who supplied the car, who also agreed with him, and contacted Audi on his behalf. New one was fitted FOC.
Hi, I have a scenice Mark1 Phase 2 (2002 02 plate). It is fitted with climate control air con. (Digital reading)I am use to Fords and Vauxhalls. The interior fan gets quicker as the speed is turned up but very little air flow comes out of the vents, even on full power. Equivalent to 1 or 2 on Vauxhall. I have tried setting to AUTO and Lowest temp and all vents are the same whether on screen or face ,aircon on or off. Aircon has been charged.H*y*s manaul no use ! Nothing is blocking the exterior vents. Is their a pollen filter which is blocked? where is it? fan seems to been in passenger footwell area.User manual only refers to dealer.I cant find another owner with climate control. Help the weather is hot! Mark. Read more
well there's a 'result'! 2 hours from query to all fixed! Enjoy the rest of the heatwave in your cold car!
FIL's Exhaust went on Holiday last week he needed a new catalyst and front box as the cat was cracked. Ford rapid fit relieved him of £1300 to fix it. The biggest cost was the catalyst, a genuine Citroen part, at £800+Vat!
If we were at home I could have searched the internet for a pattern part.

If we were at home we certainly would have have searched out a much better deal.(already found a cat for £200) Its very difficult when you are on holiday for just a week with 2 disabled adults to look after and need the vehicle to tow a caravan home.
Next time we go on holiday I'll remember to take a few telephone numbers such as gfs and euro car parts with us.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a 3 point belt to the middle of the back seat of a Renault 19? I'm sure it can be done, I think the real would have to be bolted to the boot floor, but does it need a top support, or can it just run over the top of the seat? Saftey is of course the most important point, as at some point in the next year or two my two yongest will outgrow their group 1 car seats so I will need a proper belt.
Also what would be a fair price for the conversion? Read more
Thanks, will give them a call during the week.
I did a quick search, but found their website is under construction.

I wasn´t getting the 4 beep warning from the power sounder, but it turned out that it was the cause.
The garage took it out - problem solved.
Cheers again for the advice.
