Recently purchased a 2000 vectra. Had a battery changed since then. Now I can't get the tape player to work, due to the fact I don't have the code for the system. Other than going to the vaxhall dealer and paying the price do I have any other option? Read more
If i had an exhaust blowing where it joins the cat would that cause a loss in torque? The power is ok but it feels like the torque has gone when the turbo kicks in Read more
The only exhaust blow that would affect performance would be be
one before the turbo.
where abouts would this be located? I can here a low sounding noise comming from the front end when the turbo is kicking in. It does sound like an exhaust blowing. Its lost the torque it use to have but the power is fine if that makes sense
Yesterday on the M6 north of Preston I saw my first Chrysler 300C.
Well, couldn't miss it really - what a big, imposing vehicle! This one was in black. And as I slowly passed it and saw that grill, wow. It looks even bigger in the flesh (if you know what I mean).
I must admit, I don't really approve of imported Chryslers after the way they shut the UK and mainland Europe plants down all those years back, but maybe I've just got a long memory. Anyway it's certainly some motor.

Also seen several Cadillac CTSs,
which have quite challenging looks, but its refreshing to have some
variety on the roads, makes a change from all the BMs
and Mercs.
Yes, it does. And its nice to see colours other than silver too.

Well known story discussed here at length, but could not find the thread in the Forum search.
I think he's been caught out - as I thought he would be. He is a professional lorry driver, so would know what would happen if he simply turned the key back one notch.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive? Read more
ON PU's advice, I've locked this thread.
No more discussion on the subject elsewhere please. Well, not until at least the court case is over.

I was on the A1(M) yesterday early evening, there was a bad crash that closed both sides for about 45 mins to an hour. When we finally crawled through, couldn't see a lot except a car parked across 3 lanes and a motorbike on the ground, which always makes me shudder.
2 things: i) there are no reports of it that I can find today... how bad does a hold up or accident have to be? and ii) the usual suspects were driving past everyone and forcing their way in at the front despite the signage showing outside lanes blocked and ACCIDENT in massive letters. "I'm too busy to wait haw haw".
Bless the heart of the VERY large HGV that blocked the middle and outside lane, and chuckles at the yuppie moron in the Z4 who shook his fist at said driver when he finally squeezed through. Who actually shakes their fist any more?!! How very Laurel and Hardy. Must be something they teach on Business Studies courses these days. Read more
Certainly screaming down the right
lane and then braking hard and swerving into a "gap" to
your left is not the way to do it.
Try braking a few cars earlier and then crawling past the last few in the queue before trying to merge.
Does it show that I've been driving BMWs for years? ;o)
I've got a wheel bearing type noise coming from the front nearside of my battered, but mechanically good mondeo.
Could it be anything else, there doesn't appear t be any movement when moving the wheel top to bottom with it jacked up>
How difficult are they to change the bearings or is it necessary as with so many modern cars to buy a new hub?

Well its all back together and working well.
Once I'd got the wheel off I found out that not only was the bearing very very worn but the spring was also broken.
Sourced a second hand leg from the local breakers yard for £30. Swapped the discs form the old leg to the new one and had no real grief putting it all back together.
The biggest problem I had was taking the wheel of the hub to start with.
Thanks for your advice.

If I do a search on Google for providers of GAP insurance, none of the big name insurance companies appear.
Why's is that?

I didn't get it, was involved in an incident, regretted it! I took it out on my current car, but didn't take the dealers inflated effort, shopped around and got my own.
I've sometimes came through an article talking of having the engine blueprinted. What is this exactly? Does it mean that all the cast lines are removed and polishing all the internals of the engine (and carbs if used)? Read more
I read the other week that they're tending not to bother with racing bike engines any more - where they used to buy 20 or 30 conrods to get four that balanced (if a class where you couldn't machine them to balance) they find that modern manufacturing is good enough not to go to these extremes.
Racers used to go to opposites of what you and me would do though - looking for bigger clearances in bearings and bores to cut down friction rather than increase life or reduce oil consumption.

Is the quality of diesel in the USA still terrible? Or is the 'diesel boom' leading to better quality?
I ask because VW diesels are the most popular there for cars (I think) so if they can run to hundreds of thousands of miles on what they sell there, our highly refined diesel should mean a very low stressed fuel system.

>With modern engines, oils, and fuels, you will never convince they actually need these stupidly large engines.
My "stupidly large" 5.7L Chevy averages the same MPG as my 3.2L Jag which averages the same as the 2.5L Porsche I owned a few years ago. 22 to 24mpg on essentially the same mix of mainly urban roads. American V8 engines have come a long way since they were catalytically castrated in the mid '70s.
Witness the Corvettes at Le Mans.
Kevin...

I've spoken to the local Vauhall garage and they can do everything for £22. Seems reasonable enough for me, although I do have to wait a couple of days.
Cheers Vern
