My son got his imported 2nd hand Toyota Lucida yesterday. The dealer assured him they had changed the cambelt. They had shown him the old belt, (well, an old belt) but a suspicious person like me can't help wondering. The engine seems very clean, and has fresh oil, but should he have some documentation to say the job had been done ? Or does he just trust their reputation ?
The car drove well, but he has to return it so they can correct some brake judder.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts.
As I have limited mechanical knowledge, I always deal with local people with solid reputations to protect. Read more
Can you help, I have a t series rover engine 2 Litre 820si.
The head has just been machined and returned to me. The question I have is in refitting the camshaft timing sprockets in the correct position. They have slots from the central bolt hole marked "in" and "exh" with corresponding drive pins in the camshafts. My question is which way round do the pulleys fit onto the drive pins? The timing marks are also marked inlet and exhaust, and these should line up horizontally, with I think the inlet markings on the inlet side of the head. Also with the engine set at 90 btdc, what position should the cam lobes be in?
Thanks

I am a private buyer in the market for an audi a3, around five years old. Which is going to be better value ebay or auction, bearing in mind i will have to pay auction fees on top of purchase price. I was looking to purchase genuine main dealer part exchange if buying from auction Read more
Thanks for that info, I`ll get in touch with Joe Dowd. I guess his the auction fees he has to pay are a lot less than a private buyer, which helps offset the fee he charges. Also his company has the benefit of visiting lots of auctions which I don`t have the time to do. Ebay may be also worth a look but only bidding on cars I can inspect before auction end added with an HPI check
Audi A3 Sportback with two zone climate control. Had car since new and in all that time I have had the 'Auto Air Recirculation' button on - dealer advised it as being the best way of operating the system. This monitors the air and when polluted air is detected it switches from allowing outside air to enter the cabin to recirculating the cabin air. Yesterday the light was out so I pressed it and it went out straight away as though the system wasn't operating. Turned car off, turned back on and light lit for a few seconds. Looked in manual and only mention is that when the system is switched on it will recirculate for a maximum of 12 minutes to prevent windows steaming up and to allow fresh air in the cabin, but from my experience the system won't actually turn off and the light remains illuminated. A fault with the system is shown by the ECON light being lit constantly.
Tried auto recirc button all this morning and no luck in getting it to stay on, decided to call in at dealer, half way there I press it again and it now works.
Is there something I'm missing in how it operates or is it faulty? Read more
Don't know if it's the same idea but the climate control on the Accord automatically goes into recirulate until the temperature inside the car reaches the set point - only then does the recirculate light go out and it allows outside air into the car.
Somewhat dismayed with the posts in here just lately which seem to critisize endlessly various car companies products in particular Ford and Volkswagen.
Surely we all come to the backroom 'cos we love cars?
I do have issues with some cars but i'm very reluctant to critisize them as I still get enourmous pleasure driving them and sometimes their faults are part of the charm.
Gilles Villenueve once said to Enzo Ferrari after a test in a F1 car "the cars rubbish.. absolutly terrible but i'll drive it all day and love every minute of it" That's why Gilles was Enzo's favourite F1 driver out of all of the Ferrari drivers

>>What I find tedious is the gratuitous use of the emotive words ?scam?, ?con? and ?rip off?, .....
I certainly agree with that. I also think that it is very easy to mislead on the internet and one needs to treat others opinions with that in mind, and also to reprsent your own with a little caution and be frank about actual knowledge/experince or WAG.
Other than that, I would think just about any opinion is valuable at some level, provided it doesn't monopolise.
Sometimes an irritating opinion can be tough to take, but it is just an opinion, its not life or death.
I've just received a letter from CIS informing me that this is the last year that they will be offering an "Any Driver" policy. Are all insurers going in this direction?

Anyone know of a decent bodyshop in the area? The Mondey's got scraped across three panels and needs a dent knocking out - any idea where's good, or are Ford probably the best for this "platinum colour"???

I've got a 1400cc Nissan Sunny (1990 model with 12v carb engine) which has been running poorly for a while.
The engine began misfiring, so I changed the distributor cap & rotor arm, and checked the leads (which are fairly new anyway). The misfiring problem seems a bit better now, but the engine still feels gutless, and has started backfiring under acceleration at low revs (1500-2000 revs). This seems worse when the engine's warmed up.
Any ideas? I'm thinking valve clearances, but does anyone else have any other suggestions? Read more

Some straight advice please. Our 99V Passat TDi 110 is approaching 60k and I want to know whether the cambelt needs replacing at that point or whether we have any leeway.
Having had a 1.8 20V in the past I know how crucial the cambelt cycle can be on Passats, so can someone tell me the scheduled replacement and whether it's an absolute must on the dot.
