I've had my Diesel Touran for nearly 2 years, and the service light has not yet appeared, but it's due imminently.
I haven't spoken to my local VW dealer for longlife servicing costs, but I'm hoping someone here has experience.
Does any know what a reasonable price for the service is?
Is it worthwhile going to a SEAT or Skoda Dealer to get this done cheaper than VW.
Thanks in advance Read more
The garage plugged in a diagnostic tool to my Astra today to see what was going on with the alarm system.
It´s a ´99 1.8 CDX Astra Estate.
As far as I could understand the nice German mechanic, his machine required the ECU code unique to the car before he could ´get in´ to the system and start checking stuff.
This apparently comes on a card...which I don´t have in the car document wallet. Grrr.
Now, is there a ´default´ code that will bypass this problem, like a master key, and get into the system? Or is there another way round it?
Any ideas very much appreciated.
Thanks,

Cheers John. I have rung the original dealership who helpfully had the codes on file. Nice people too - CD Bramhall in Wolverhampton (altho´ they´re called something different now).
Haven´t heard the ´black countrei´ accent in a while...
I'm planning on buying a second hand polo,
have two cars in mind to view this weekend but wish to have a bit of advice regarding them.
Both cars come within my rather modest budget so it's really a case of weighing up the pros and cons for each
the first is a 1998 1.4 cl model (which i prefer over the other), but with 94000 miles on the clock. has regular service history to 91000.
the second is a 1.3 l model (which i hear is quite a poor model in comparison), but with a lower 65000 miles on the clock, not as much service history.
it's mainly the mileage that concerns me. is 95000 miles high for a polo of this age or will there happily be another 20-30000 miles to go.
Any info or suggestions would be really cool thanks. Read more
hi
i have a Polo 1.6 GL 1997 model. i am the 4th owner and have had it for the past 2 years. great car! it was my first and although i have bought another car (needed a bigger one as my family had expanded) i have still kept it and don't want to sell it yet.
it had 63000 on the clock when i got it - it has nearly 80000 now. got the cambelt done last month as i was doing heavy mileage - cost me 150 quid or so at halfords - great job.
it's true about the rust on the body and the wheel trims - mine's got them now - no mechanical faults though.
very reliable - have been all over the country in it. 80000 on the clock seems to be no bother for me - go for it mate
hope this was useful.
by the way can anybody give me some advice on how to spray paint the wheel trims please??
no idea whom or how to email fuad Ahmad but according to my book an egr was only fitted up to 2000 (on the 1800) and its just behind the dipstick on the side of the block Read more
HJ,
As oldman says, "no idea whom or how to email fuad Ahmad"
But if he visits the following website;
www.m1gst.com/vb/showthread.php?t=47924
and looks in the section, Engine Bay/Transmission
and then scrolls down until he finds 'How-To'..... Remove/Replace the EGR Valve (X18XE1)
That *should* help him.
Although it's refering to an Astra engine, more than likely it'll be the same engine in the Zafira.
I have been driving for 30 odd years, bikes & cars, without accident and am now looking to renew my insurance.
Oh Joy many companies advertising low cost insurance for 'Good/Safe' drivers. Let's get an online quote.........
Oh Dear! As 2 years ago & 3 years ago car was broken into..... NO (cheap) QUOTE
OK let's try ringing round for a quote.
"Ah sorry sir as 2 years ago & 3 years ago your car was broken into we cannot offer you..." etc.
"Hang on a min, that was NOT my DRIVING at fault, also I now live in Wales the break-ins occured in England!"
"Sorry sir it is your NCD we use and that has to be over 4 years without a claim."
"But your TV AD says Good/Safe (delete as appropriate) Drivers, you can see I have had NO ACCIDENTS!!"...........
Oh why do I bother? All the quotes were higher than my renewal any way and I needed to waste an afternoon/evening and spend some money on the phone ;) (hang on most of the calls were FREE!)
Maybe advertising standards?????? Any ideas anyone? Read more
'Something that also piques my curiosity is that you say you've moved since the break-ins, yet you're being penalised. I lived in a house in Manchester that was burgled several times, but my premium in Southampton isn't affected by that. Odd that I would have been penalised if it had been my car rather than my house.'
When I moved here my premium shot up from £30 to £70 a month.
Lived here 2 years and (touch wood) no problems yet.
Was at my last address for 2and a half years and had the 2 break-ins.

Hi
I am new to the forum and would appreciate some advice. I foolishly moved a car which is registered as SORN off my drive in order to get another vehicle off the drive.
I had the car parked out my house and had a knock at the door from a policeman asking who the car belonged to etc. He has given me a producer to take my MOT and insurance documents to my local Police station.
The car in question does not have a valid MOT or Insurance as it hasn't been used other than to move a few metres off my drive.I appreciate that I am whole heartedly responsible for this and am prepared to face the consequences.
I acknowledge I am in the wrong for having the vehicle on the road without tax and am fully prepared to pay a fine.
Can anyone clarify what penalties I may get for this and will I have to go to court and ultimately end up with a criminal record?Up until now I have a clean licence and no criminal record.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

i think the reason turbo965 is sensitive about the discussion drifting
to insurance is because that is exactly what hapened to him
on the other forum mentioned. he brushed it off at first
saying that "he was covered by doc extension" until it was
pointed out to him that doc usually excluded your own other
cars.
turbo965 was also warned on the forum for not following their
policy on starting new threads.
the bit that i would like to find out more is
about the car that he had blocked in. i am intrigued
to know whether that car was also sorned or whether he
had blocked it in behind his sorned car for all that
time. also, if he was only moving the sorned car out
to let the other car out, why did he then leave
the sorned car out on the road long enough for someone
to complain about it. as peter says it seems that the
odds were conspiring against turbo965 on that day for a passerby
to spot his sorned car on the road while it was
parked there for a few minutes, and just when a policeman
happened to be passing. there may well be more to this
story than is obvious at first glance.
I couldnt care less where else hes been and what has been said. As I see it him the most serious breach is no insurance on a public highway, the other two will be small fines and back tax. I hope he manages to keep his cool with the police and the courts and not go off on a rant like he did here!
2 Dirty VW diesels and a Honda with an 18 inch blade

To come to this chaps defence after that bit of 'hair-splitting', the VaG diesel motors always do this, ie 3/4 litre in 10-12L miles and then settle down to fairly negligible oil consumption thereafter, unless thrashed to within an inch of their lives....
