Following on from my thread about auction values and selling my BMW.
I've found a dealer who is prepared to pay me the sort of money I'm looking for but I've never sold to a dealer before and am somewhat nervous about just handing over the car.
So any tips would be useful, how should I get him to pay me for the car and keep myself safe? Read more
Go to your bank with him and let him pay CASH into your account.

I see that the Focus TDCi CVT automatic is again availabel for sale, after a long period when it seemed nobody knew just when this variation would be available. Anyone know why this should be, as I still can't find any mention of it on the Ford UK site (no doubt someone will tell me it is there)?
I have read a few comments that slated the transmission, whilst others said it was wonderful. I wonder where the truth lies? Read more

Spot on with Ford CVT'S. Mine was on an Orion.
I guess if I did take the plunge again it would be on a Japanese car. Like Machika I have only heard good things about the Jazz.
The other one that springs to mind is the Nissan Murano. I even heard a rumour that the next Skyline will have a CVT option.
That would be worth seeing!
On Sunday there was a fatal crash involving a family of 5 in an Escort and an Toyota Prius on the A6 at Penrith. Of the 7 people in both cars 6 died and the only survivor is critically ill. All of the deaths in the Escort were of young people.
The purpose of this thread is not to analyse the accident in anyway, simply to emphasise that these deaths should remind us all to drive to the best of our ability.

Road springs shouldn't break. Car suspension is designed to absorb bumps. Provided the car is driven at a speed that doesn't make the sump hit the road either on or after the speed bump, it seems to me not to matter how fast people drive over them. The car may break, but it shouldn't.
Several posters have taken the lofty line that some drivers 'don't understand' that you have to go slowly over bumps and through potholes. Obviously if you see something that's going to damage your tyres, you slow to an appropriate speed. Otherwise this is just rubbish. Some of these idiots slow, when entering a cobbled street, to the exact speed at which every cobble and bump makes itself fully felt, shaking all the relays in the car loose at the same time. The correct speed over cobbles is as fast as possible. That smooths them out.
But people are idiots unfortunately. About three out of five anyway.
iv got a volvo s40, 'P 1996, 1.8 and was driving today when i realised that at a set of traffic lights, the car felt as if it was misfiring a bit...the revs felt as if they were falling and then going back to normal.
i drove on, cautiously, and found it difficult to put into second gear, it was tight and sticky. As i drove furthur, in 2nd and 3rd gear, the car felt sluggy as if it doesnt have wnough petrol in it, and it was choking(Although its on a full tank).
i got out of the car to check the oil level, just incase i had a sudden leak and their was no oil in the engine...but the oil level was fine.
went to smell the fumes from the exhause and it smelt as if my clutch had burnt out. it was a strong sharp smell.
if i switch the car on now, on idle, the exhaust sounds like its 'pattering and when i rev it, it sounds like a car with no fuel in it...chocking,misfiring.
can i be right in thinking this is the clutch? the car has done 66k
thanks in advance,

"if i switch the car on now, on idle, the exhaust sounds like its 'pattering and when i rev it, it sounds like a car with no fuel in it...chocking,misfiring."
That doesn't sound like a clutch problem to me. If the clutch is knackered the usual sign, apart from the smell of the friction plate burning, is a lack of drive. If there's a difficulty getting the car into gear, that would make me think more towards the gearbox/linkages etc.
The smell could be the Cat, which also fits with the erratic running. If the problem is present while the car's in neutral, it's not the clutch.
Hi, i have recently set up as a part time motor trader and i am doing ok out of it.
To keep under the vat level i tend to stick to cheap cars under 1000 and tend to sell about 6 a month.
Gross turn over is roughly about 50k to 60k.
So i only pay tax on the net profit left after insurance, general tidy up jobs, adverts etc....
I am happy to stay at this level but would ideally move on to more expensive cars, but in turn this would push my gross turn over, over the vat limit.
My main question is would i have to pay 17.5% vat on my net profit?
its just that if this is the case i might as well as stick to the 'cheapies'
I already pay 22%(tax) on net profit at the moment so a futher 17.5%(vat) would make it not worth my while.
On making 800 from one expensive car i would end up with only roughly 480 net profit.
If any traders out there have any loop holes or if the level is different on cars, could you let me know as dealing with cheaper cars is annoying when i could be making so much more money out of the higher end of the car trade.
Thank you for any advise on this matter ,
regards ,Mike Read more
I believe the VAT is charged on the difference between your BP & SP not on the SP itself.
SP = £1000
BP = £600
Profit inc VAT = £400
Profit = £340 approx VAT = £60 approx
i.e VAT approx is 15% of the Profit Margin
Dividing by 1.175 is very near multiplying profit by 0.85 Hence the 15%
Years ago on the continent the rules are different and by levying VAT on the SP the 2nd hand trade in Germany took a hammering. I do not know what their rules are now.
Can anyone offer any assistance or advice please?
I bought a 2004 (2.4) Honda Accord almost exactly a year ago. Now, after 16000 miles (mostly motorway), my rear tyres are bald, but only on the left 1-2 inches of each tyre as you look from the rear, or to put it another way, the inside of the drivers side rear, and the outside of the passenger side rear! The tyres were new when I bought the car. I have now had the camber settings and tracking checked which were both fine and am booked in at Honda next week, though the guy on the phone did not seem too confident of a resolution...hence my plea for help. Incidentally, I class my self as a sensible driver - before anyone asks! :-) Read more

Hi, for some time I have been very suspisious of the fuel gauge, as I have been convinced that it is under reading, so yesterday when the gauge showed to be just above reserve I put in approx 27 litres and the gauge settled to just bellow 1/4. Both the handbook that came with the car and the haynes manuel state that the tank holds 55 litres.
So is this definatly a problem with the sender unit in the tank, or could it be anything else? Also I heard that some sender units need calibrating, am I right in thinking that this only applies to modern cars? Read more
It sounds very much like the tank sender unit is faulty.

I'm certainly not a "Ford basher". My previous car was a Puma which was excellent, unfortunately the complete lack of a replacement by Ford or the production of anything that doesn't look like a box on wheels has led me elsewhere - probably never to return considering their latest offerings.
-- Just for the record I went to Hyundai & their latest coupe great car, proving to be a very enjoyable owning experience. If the so-called "budget" manufacturers like Hyundai can produce such an excellent car then why can't a long-established manufacturer like ford ??
