Hello

My '97 Megane revs high at idle from time to time. When it happens the throttle is fully closed and it can happen when hot or cold. Any ideas, I'm thinking some kind of sensor.

Agreed, although my old Saab injection had an idle control valve, not sure whether such a beast exists on the Megane. Perhaps a temperature sensor of some sort - this would control the additional fuelling when cold?

Hello

I need to replace the doors on my '95 fiesta which has solid pins. The top ones are coming out easy with a punch as there's plenty of room to move, however the bottom ones are tricky. Does anyone have any tips or is there a special tool that body shops use? Any help would be great.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help, I've managed to remove the doors from my car and from the scrapper and swap them. It wasn't easy as most people suggested the pins were jammed solid, luckily I had access to an OA lamp. I also ground the hinges off the bottom of the bad doors so that I could get better access to the pins as well as grinding the bottom hinges off the bad car. If anyone is going to try this make sure you have access to OA as other wise your in trouble.

Thanks Again

i have changed over the instrument panel/speedo/dash on my 97 mk golf tdi. i have the multifunction indicator thing which gives mpg average speed etc etc on the cluster and on the wiper /indicator arm.

however some time before i got the car someone changed over the cluster to a bog standered one which didnt have the mfa indicator.
my question is this. how many cables go into the back of the cluster as i have put in the main one and everything works ok,all apart from the mfa indicator.

i have a spare wire which has a 6 pin connector on it,but on the cluster only space for a 4 pin connector type space?

I've just been having a look at the Euro NCAP website. I was struck by just how much improvement there has been in scores over the past 10 years - absolutely amazing that just 9 years ago a 3-series could be getting only two stars.

My question is - how much did the crash-worthiness of cars improve in the (say) 30 years leading up to the establishment of NCAP. Were cars from the early 1990s at much the same level as cars from the 1960s, or had there been a significant over those years? Read more

It is also worth bearing in mind that stiffness isn't a global property of a bodyshell.

By this, I mean that if a bodyshell isn't torsionally stiff, as evidenced by doors not opening easily when you jack one corner up, that doesn't necessarily mean that the body isn't stiff in the direction necessary for occupant protection in a crash.

While NCAP is a good thing, I think that the companies who do well in the tests, and have lots of stars are the ones who have built their cars deliberately to achieve this - as MichaelR says, by making sure their warning lights pass muster!

There is another, more unsung, and IMO more applicable ongoing research effort, which looks at the statistics of real accidents, and real injuries and fatalities. It's much more grisly in its approach, but it is absolutely rooted in real life.

One interesting finding I saw a ex-colleague of mine uncover while he was working on a subset of these data was a sudden increase in the rate of pelvic injury between occupants of mkI and mkII Fiestas. Those who remember the cars will know that the metalwork of the door remained largely unchanged, while the interior door card was much changed for the mkII, with a prominent area containing the the arm rest and door pull which sat directly alongside the driver's pelvis, whereas in the mkI, this area was simply a flat area of door card.

A friend of mine is looking for a car for around £500. I know he's very limited with his choice but hopefully you guys would be able to suggest something.
He just needs a small cheap to run car for deliveries.
His preferences are as follows
Reliable
Cheap to run (good mpg, cheaper insurance group etc..)

I've suggested him Micra, Fiesta, Corsa and Punto.

Which one would you suggest from the above or if you know anything better than this and why?

"immaculate, low mileage, one owner 205"

nice one, Xileno. If LoveMazda lives on the southern edge of Britain, he can look on Ebay now and find several enticing 205s for sale - an XT and a cabrio to name but two, all with 40-60K on the clock. There is even a 1991 GTI 1.6 in Wakefield with only 28K ... But sadly not many bread-and-butter 205s.

Are volvo D5's any good? Read more

I bought a 2002 S60 T5 3 weeks ago and am very impressed with it. The suspension setup must be different on the T5 than the D5 as the T5 has excellent handling.
A nice big comfortable car, very good spec (9 speaker 5.1 dolby prologic stereo, cruise control, electric heated memory leather drivers seat, dual zone climate control, electric sunroof, numerous airbags etc)

I think the styling is great and would definately look at buying another Volvo as my next car.

What car best meets the following criteria?

1. Small - preferably supermini, but up to Focus-size.
2. Economical - at least 35 mpg.
3. Comfortable - smooth ride, good seats.
4. Reliable.
5. Good quality ICE (or easily upgradable)
6. Bright 'luxurious' interior (cream or light grey leather ideal)
7. Reasonable running costs.
8. Max £10k - if used, max 3 years old.

I can't think of anything that comes close. My Yaris scores well on 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8, but poorly on the others. Most cars that score well on 3, 5 and 6 are too big.

Any ideas? Read more

Since attention has turned to the Nissan Micra. Why not a Mitsuoka which has the mechanicals and something extra? A few have made it to the UK already.

I intend towing a caravan with my Mazda6 estate 2.0i auto (it is the earlier 4 speed)

I understand I need to fit a fluid cooler to the gearbox - I cannot see one in the engine bay I only assume it has the standard bottom of the radiator job.

I know Kenlowe do these additional coolers, are there any other manufacturers/suppliers that I should look at ?

Do these come with a thermostat and/or electric fan ?

Does the fluid still use the cooler through the bottom of the radiator or is this now bypassed and only the additional cooler used ?

Any idea where thie cooler should be fitted ?

There is not much space in the engine bay, only obvious place is in front of the radiator behind the grille - presumably some kind of special bracket to hold it would be required as well.

If there is anything else I should take into account then please let me know !!!

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Fitted one to a Honda Prelude VTi after I had 2 box failures. The cooler is located BEFORE the radiator/condensor and the pipe is connected AFTER the heat exchanger (bottom of radiator), thus increasing the the size of the closed loop. Seems to have helped as the ATF is now still as clean as the day it went in.
