fiesta1.1

Fiesta 1.1 1993 CFI, It is a new car to me and has only done 22000 miles from new. It is not being used for long trips maybe 10 miles at a time. It is warming up as it should and the MoT emissions a couple of months ago were OK. It is doing about 30 mpg which is not so good. And has this intermittent engine racing at idle sometimes as mention in my previous post. Any clues what it could be as i dont want to start changing bits randomly to no avail. Read more

Yes carburettor in 95. Over here in Malta the local agent got some '93 Fiesta's which he sold at a good price since the new Fiesta was already introduced. I got it at a thousand Maltese lira less than original price. They were branded as Fiesta Classic.
To say the truth I like the design better than the rounded version which came after it.

Can I mix 0W40 fullly synthetic engine oil with 5w40 semi synthetic engine oil. Both are performance oils going in a vectra GSi. If not, which of the two should I put in and what would happen if anything if they were mixed in the engine? Read more

You can, but it's not 'best practice'.

I used to have 2 BMWs. 1 being a 4dr 316i and a 318is coupe.
the 316 was very underpowered and the 318is did have a bit of poke. i now drive a golf cos i had to sell the 318 to release some money, but i miss the BMWs and want one back.
I'll have around £1900 to spend and was undecided between a coupe and a compact. never used to like the compacts but they have grown on me a bit.
What do you guys think and especially what to look out for. i know the basics to look out for as i have had a couple, and by reading the car breakdown bit.

Also remember that despite its appearance, the E36 Compact is a VERY dated car. It has an E30 rear suspension setup and I believe but cannot quite remember an E30 based interior as well.

It's dated, it's tired, its old.

Get yourself a decent budget or swallow your pride and stick with mainstream marques - although if its kudos you are after old BMW's are negative in that regard.

I may be getting a new car allowance, significantly more than I currently receive.

This gets me thinking. I could be tight, run a car like I currently do and pocket the wonga. Alternatively...

I'm thinking about buying a three/four year old diesel S-Class for about £18-£20K. My reasoning runs that in another three years I'll get about £10K for it, so depreciation will have been about £10K over three years, roughly double my Omega's depreciation (£8K over 5 years), but a price I'm willing to pay for a bit of luxury.

Will I rue the day I ever bought one if I do? Will running costs be astronomical? Will the Mercedes build quality issues make me go bald?

In your answers, please assume that I am basically sane, but that I like the idea of a big car for its comfort and presence.

Also assume that under no circumstances will I ever buy a new car, so please don't suggest it.

As another Omega driving family man casting glances at S class Mercs.; are the previous generation W140 cars any less scary? A bloke at work was selling his P plate one the other week for 5K, seemed a very nice motor, makes the Omega look compact:-/

I know Renaults are much maligned in this forum, but how cool is their booking service?

My Scenic II is heading for its 18K mile service in late August, and I know there is variation between garages as to cost. After registering online I can check the service costs for all the dealers in my area just by amending my dealer of choice. It transpires that my supplying dealer, a rather small and scabby garage is the cheapest, and the glitzy direct owned chrome and glass palace the most costly by £40.

Labour £85
ACEA98 B£ DIESEL-£35.25
ELEMENT FILTRANT-£18.00
FILTER CABIN-21.08
OIL FILTER L"-6.94
WASHER-£1.06

Environmental charge £3.50

Total £170.83

You cannot argue for efficiency and transparency. Do other dealers / marques online book in such a way?

1992 Astra 2000L 8v SRi estate - temperature gauge reads low, new thermostat ensures 92degC should be 1/2 full scale meter but meter only reads 1/4 FS =82degC.
So either meter faulty, sender unit is faulty or the voltage regulator (associated with the temp gauge and fuel gauge) is faulty.
Can anyone tel me the specified VR output volts? either when connected to the sender unit or disconnected.
Also where is VR located? Read more

wbd

The Fuel gauge works OK.

I put a 99ohm resistor in place of the T/S and the temp gauge read 1/4FS (80C). Thus the gauge is off or requires a non-standard sender, unlikely. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

End of Story, thanks for all your support.

Funny, though my tachometer also reads low (10 -20%) but that's another story...

Civic C-TDCI

I was running my 2002 passat tdi on 100% pure bio diesel without problem but have just changed it for the new Honda Civic 2.2 diesel. I can't find any information on the internet about using bio diesel in the new Honda engines.

Although I would normally try anything once it's a big risk deliberately putting the wrong fuel in a brand new car.

Does anyone know of any reason why it should be any less suitable for bio fuel?

Any thoughts or comments welcomed. Read more

Altea Ego

If it uses a new high pressure common rail engine then you cant use pure bio diesel in it. Check it out with Honda. They will probably say 5% max bio (as sold in Europe and soon here at the pumps)

Last night, I had to help my mate recover his '05 Mondeo DCi 160 ST from a flooded road.
Anyway, before driving through the rather large 'puddle' he witnessed other cars of varying makes safely negotiate said flood with no problems. The water level was below wheel hub on his 17" wheels.
He didn't race through it and followed the usual advice of not changing gear half way through and keep to a speed in low gear that generates a small bow wave. Guess what happened?

The last car he saw go through must have dropped its undertray as it was bits of the previous car that we pulled out from the mangled and folded back remains of his car's undertray. Even though it was at a safe speed, the debris (hidden under the water) got caught under his car ripping off the tray and causing a large amount of water to be deflected upwards into the intake.

Car stopped dead, so he tried to restart - with result that starter motor stripped its teeth trying to turn over an engine that was hydraulically locked due to water ingestion!
The air filter was soaking with large amounts of water floating around the intercooler, turbo and cylinders.

(The annoying thing is the road floods since the local council put in full road width speed humps that now act as very effective dams. A great design.)

Luckily for him his insurance will cover the repairs but the new mondeo and most other modern cars have very low air intakes so beware of standing water and if in doubt don't go through! Read more

David Horn

Aren't the air intakes low down to pick up cooler air?
