A friend is offering for sale his Renault Grand Espace and I'm not sure what a fair offer would be because of the miles...

Here's the spec:

2003 '03' Grand Espace 2.2 dCi 'Expression'
Metallic paint, 69,000 miles, FRSH, good condition (not mint)

He's offering to put new tyres on it, get the 72,000 miles 'big' service done, and MOT it before sale in August.

He's wanting to start negotiations at £12,000, so what do backroomers think is a fair offer? Any other buying advice appreciated.

Many thanks! Read more

Let him stay a Renault fan it would not do for all of us to support the same team.

Arrgh....i can't believe I did it , but I did, how can I sort this out.....
could drain
I filled up on my way home from work and accidently put in super unleaded petrol into my diesel hire van...luckily I noticed before starting it up, so I managed to call the RAC, this was 10pm, it was too late or at least too far to take me to a garage that could drain the tank, so I asked them to take me home...I 'm going to have to sort this out tomorrow morning, are there particular garages I should be looking for that can halp me with this situation.

The hire company's breakdown policy doesn't cover filling up with wrong fuel.

I live in Basildon in Essex..

thankyou for any help.

Screwloose mentioned the problems with disposal of petrol / diesel mixtures. The vehicle hire company I work for have a 45 gallon drum for storing such mixtures. It costs £70 to have a full drum removed and replaced with an empty one.

what about the 6 speed gearbox prone to fail

Just curious what cars have been instrumental in getting any of you guys attention from the ladies?

One presumes ( if my neighbour is anything to go by ) that if your a teenage lad, you take one Corsa, fit a piece of your dads drainpipe where the exhaust should be
( checking a cat hasnt gone to sleep in it before you start the engine ) and put a stereo in it worth three times the cars value with that extra half turn on the volume only the under 20's can find.
That seems to work for my neighbour who has many girls hanging off his arm, though not what you would call classy girls by any stretch.

Ive always found an Aston DB7 gets quite a few pretty faces looking at it ( a mate has one ). Read more

Last night in Manchester the only car cruising past the bar I was in that attracted girls attention was a 50's Chevy Bel Air, in pink.

My cousin is interested in buying a C class Sports Coupe. I am 99% certain that I saw adverts in the press last week with a special deal Mercedes were running with £3K of extra equipment on it for no extra cost.

On the Merc website there is no reference to this, only to a similar deal on a C Class Saloon.

Did anyone else see this advert or have I been having strange dreams again? Read more

Cheers for that rjr, I will send her the link.

I have a 1997 Passat 1.9Tdi and wish to tune it. What recommendations can any Passat Tdi owning backroomers give me as to which is the best tuning box or chip?
Bye the way it's an auto if that makes any difference.

There was a long lead time for the 110TDi in '97 due to demand outstripping supply. I was one of those patiently waiting; I remember Diesel Car reporting that many were getting fed up with waiting and were swapping to 90bhp TDi's on short delivery times and then chipping them to give near 110bhp performance.
There are always adverts in Diesel Car for a variety of companies offering this.

A couple of days ago I topped the oil up on my 98' 2.0 Primera. Did not have to add much. Drove 15 miles ( last 4 miles down a dual carriageway ) to work this morning and as I pulled in I smelt oil. Realised in a nightmare flashback that I had not put the oil filler cap back on the engine, lifted the bonnet and there it was on top of the engine block. It seemed like oil was everywhere.
Left it a few hours and topped it back up again right to the top of the 'max' level on the dipstick, drove home with no apparent ill effects.
I have tried to wipe off as much oil as I can. Anyone got any sensible advice for a numpty ?? Will the engine be ok, should I get the engine bay steam cleaned?? Read more

You could try cleaning it youself with liberal amounts of GUNK,steam cleaning is ok if the operator is conversant with doing cars ie you don'nt want the electrics flooding.

Took the 214 in for its MoT today - passed again first time, as of yet never failed one now which is not bad considering its on 115,000 all it gets is an oil change and a wash once a year.

Anyway there is an advisory for a new sump as current one has gone porus - I assumed it was the sump plug leaking from last oil change.

It really needs doing asap as tester recons it wont last much longer before dropping all of the oil. He has quoted £60 for the sump and £40 to fit - expecting that to include new oil!

Does that sound too expensive? If so where can I get one cheaper and then I will get them to fit it?

Thanks Read more

>>You shouldn't really let the oil drip onto the road,

Probably will cause an accident if not taken off the road, very much surprised no one else mentioned this.

Oil don't mix with water, unless soluble it floats on water making it lethal to drive on.

OP has not commented further,so assume its still being driven??

left ferry at 2235. Nice easy driving. Going past Oxford did the mandatory 50 and every HGV on the road ovetook me. At silverstone and brackley area the road signs got confusing. Lots of temporary 40 signs on th left of the road interspersed with the regular derestricted. One 40 sign upside down. Exactly what is the speed limit? What force in law do these temporary ones have?

After midnight on the M1 overhead signs warned of incident and recommended 50. Did so. Every other car on the road disappeared over the horizon in front to me. After 3 of these signs next one said animals in road and 40. There were 2 of these. Many miles later no animals and no restrictions.

Do the authorities do this for fun? were there any animals? I'm a 9 pointer who obeys every speed sign I see. Am I being taken for a ride? Read more

On a similar note, speed camera markings that are left after roadworks have long gone or similar. I was on the A13 between Dagenham and the M25 a few nights ago and at seemingly random intervals there are markings on the carriageway that look as though they are ready for installation or were used in recent roadworks. No sign of cameras anywhere. As you can imagine, these caused panic amongst the general public and there was much heavy braking all over the shop almost causing accidents.

Hi

i,ve got a st24 that is slugish it has no missfires but picks up like a 1.6 not 2.5 only faults stored are both lambda's faulty.could it be the cat ? thanks tony Read more

Sounds like the catalytic converter monolith has collapsed or partially collapsed causing massive back pressure.
Have seen it quite regularly with cars with reduced ride height where the 'cat' gets impact damage or even thermal shock from puddles etc.
A garage should be able to test for excessive exhaust back pressure with a cat flow meter or similar. Sealey Tools among others also sell such devices.
