I have decided one of the above is a good buy for us as a second car, can anyone point me in the direction of a good deal.

Aircon is the only spec I require, second hand fine or new depends on the deal. Read more

Saturday Telegraph's 'Mr Money' article on sub-superminis reckoned C1 was the one to go for, but based on price mainly.

I will be changing the oil on my mondeo TDCI 2005 soon, will using a pair of ramps cause the oil not to drain, or should it be ok? Read more

kithmo

I've just changed mine, no need for ramps, plastic filter housing is at front of engine, hand tight, or if you're a wimp use a 36 mm socket but I wouldn't tighten it with the socket with it being plastic. Sump plug is at drivers side of sump, easily reached from the front of the car, 13 mm socket or spanner. If you leave the oil to drain for about 20 mins and thoroughly clean out the filter housing, the oil will be nice and clean for a little longer. Capacity 5.5 ltr

Question Rover 414
lady driver

Could anyone help with two things -

1) Where is the relay for the passenger front window?

2) Is it possible to fit a cycle carrier on a late 1998 model?, we nearly set off with a Euromat type on the back, but realised just in time that the hooks were on rubber seals rather than metal of hatchback.

Would be glad of any clues Read more

wrangler_rover

On the subject of cycle carriers, no it's not possible to fit the carrier that sits on the hatchback & is hung from the top edge of the hatchback by metal hooks because the top edge is a soft rubber.
There are 2 alternatives:
a) If you have a towbar, buy a "Pendle" type cycle rack that bolts onto the towbar.
b) If you don't have a towbar, buy a set of roofbars, I would recommend Thule Rapid fit system, readily available on Ebay and cycle carriers of the type that bolt onto roofbars and hold the cycle upright, again available from Ebay.

Some of you asked if I would let you know how I get on with the B-class, so here goes.

Likes

Seems well built and nothing, touch wood, has gone wrong or fallen off yet.

Supplying dealer, Greenoaks of Reading, are excellent. A 'team leader' meets you when you bring your car in and meets you again when you come back, with knowledge of what has been done.

Good high driving position and very comfortable seats.

Engine becoming livelier - like most diesels it won't give of its best till I've done about 10,000 miles. Sport mode on the multitronic transmission is useful.

Rear seats fold flat easily without removing headrests. Plenty of room in the back.

Dislikes

Engine very noisy, especially while accelerating: all 4-cylinder automatic diesels are going to drone to some extent, but there could be more soundproofing. There's none on the bonnet lid for example.

Idling speed irritatingly low at about 700 rpm - it doesn't stall but the whole car vibrates.

Wipers, although clap-hands, set up for LHD in that the offside one is shorter than the nearside and parks under it, leading to a wide unwiped area next to the driver's A-pillar.

These may seem minor but are surprisingly irritating. Greenoaks have tried their best on the second and third of these, but it's all fixed immovably by the factory.

I wouldn't have had this one but for the special deal whereby MB put up £2000 deposit and the PCP is at 2.9 % APR. I'm not sure whether MB extended this beyond the original deadline of 31 March.

Anyway it was £100 pm cheaper than the Audi, but there's no doubt that the Audi (A4 Avant 2.5 TDI) was worth it. Read more

My Saab TiD used to rattle my teeth out at idle, I was at risk of getting vibration white finger from the gear stick.
I mentioned it at a main dealer service and they adjusted the idle speed from 900 up to 1000rpm, I think they just did it via the plug-in diagnostics, and it improved things a lot.

They might be able to do the same for you next time you take it in?

Why would driving around showing your country's flag be a sign of stupidity ?

I would have said that sneering at someone for nothing more than showing their flag would be a much stronger indication. Next time I guess they should consult with the behaviour police and their oh so superior supporters to check what is acceptable and what is not.

I guess its some kind of deep insecurity and need to belong which encourages some people to join together and belittle others.

Simon (Anne\'s Other Half)

I'm beginning to get quite desperate, so would appreciate any help.

I have a Pug 306 HDi 1999 on a V plate. It has only ever had diesel in the tank.

The engine cut out less than a mile from home over two weeks ago. It stalled, as though in too high a gear, and refused to start.
After about 20 seconds the engine started, but would not take the strain of letting the clutch in, stalling each time I tried.
The vehicle was taken to my local independant garage. Their diagnostics said there were fuelling problems with the injectors, but he was sceptical, as after clearing the fault codes, a different set of codes appeared.
It was taken to a Peugeot main dealer who diagnosed failed injectors 1 & 3. As a result all 4 were changed as per Pug procedures. The car still would not fuel or run correctly.
The fuel pump was changed, as Peugeot said there could be swarf in the fuel system. No Change.

I've got the following info from the dignostics machine to see if anyone can help:
Diesel Pressure 290 Bar
Injector Quantity 14.1 mm3/l
Main Injector 1.7 Idle - 6.2 Flat
Injector 4 -2.5
Injector 3 +1.9
Injector 2 -5.0
Injector 1 +5.3

The ECU is coming up with the following fault codes:
1404 - PreHeating or PostHeating Control
0201 - Cylinder No 1 injector or circuit - Open circuit or short to Ground/Battery

The car is still not running. It sounds like the roughest post-war eastern bloc tractor you could imagine.
The circuit has been tested and is not open.
Neither my Indy garage nor Peugeot have a clue what is actually wrong with the car, as they have both admitted to my face. I've spent a lot of cash so far and feel it's all been wasted..........

Please help!
Thanks

Simon

Couple of questions for you to ponder..

Does a car pollen filter still work when my air-con is set to recycle? or does it work better when the recycle switch is set to off?

Basically what I want is the best setting as I suffer badly from hayfever this time of year and want the best setting I can get.

TIA

Imagos, both of those cars (as with most) only filter fresh incoming air. But there isn't much need to filter air that's already been filtered anyway. The trouble is, I think you already have hayfever when you get in the car and are unlikely to cure it unless you spend hourse sealed in the car!

Can someone tell me if there is much involved in cleaning a mondeo egr valve , engine in question is liter duratorq TD!

Reason for asking this is at a recent mot the tester really reved the hell outta it , as tho he was really trying to lower the readings....btw was just under the limit.

I can see the valve at the back of the engine and it looks a pita to get at.

Should i leave alone as car is going very well....or investigate further? Read more

vagparts.

the website isnt much, but Im told they will source any genuine vw/audi parts at a significant discount. seem to have quite a long delivery time so I assume they source through a dealer in europe or the states.
