We had one some time ago. It was a 02 plate 220CDI - when I sold it, it had 108k on clock. It was reliable during the time I had it, the engine was noisy. I might be wrong, it has an image of a girly car - perhaps you are a girl? My wife liked it - just for comparison, she hates the equivalent C class saloon.

Good evening one and all.

This is a bit of a confusing one, and I'm not sure if I'll explain it properly but I'll give it a whirl.

I'm a bus driver and I've noticed a lot of car drivers recently letting me back into the traffic by indicating right. Now don't get me wrong, I really appreciate courtesy from other drivers when I'm at work (and, for that matter when I'm not!) but I find this method of letting me out very confusing. To me, it just seems that the driver behind is simply letting me know that he is about to pass me so I stay where I am. The driver then takes the hump as I've not taken advantage of their courtesy!

I think this came about because if us bus drivers are letting a vehicle into the line of traffic then we tend to stick on our offside indicators but this is merely to let the person behind, who probably can't see round the bus, that we're not parked up and will probably be moving again very shortly.

So, please, if you are going to let a bus out of a stop (and please continue to do so - we love it!) then rely on the traditional headlamp flash, or even gesture (politely!).

There - hope I haven't confused too many people. Thanks for reading my waffle, and here's to continued harmony on the roads. Yeh, right... !!!

Bizare and dangerous IMHO.

I agree. Lets just leave the indicators for the original purpose eh, like signaling a turn!

BTW, I've never seen that up here, either by buses or cars.

Just got back today from sunny, sunny Brittany. Spent 5 blissful hours on French motorways from Dinan to Dunquerke. Hour after hour of stress free cruising at 80mph, people pulling over to allow overtaking, people indicating! me pulling over to allow overtaking. Light traffic, no fist shaking, no glaring looks, Then....horror of horrors, Dover, M20 - London bound. Jockeying for position, boxing and coxing, ducking, diving, brake, accelerate, honking and hooting, rude onbnoxious drivers everywhere, flags of St George a flutter.

Wished I was heading back to France instead of coming back from my hols.

By the way....not a single flag to be seen there on any vehicle or any house. Are the French in the Worl Cup?

Secondly, Norfolk Line. Nice little ships! They have obviously upgraded their fleet! Very comfy, well run, only £68 return (which was £100 cheaper than P&O/Sea France/Euro Tunnel for same times of travel) Read more

Believe me, traffic lights are found on roundabouts in France and the situation is much worse than the UK because there is often one rule for in-town roundabouts - priority to those entering the roundabout - and another for out-of-town roundabouts - priority to those already on the roundabout. The confusion sometimes has to be seen to be believed.
If you think the Paris peripherique is a bit hair-raising you should try the motorways around Lisbon...

I drive a now somewhat elderly Volvo 940 automatic with 135000 up .1991 and H plate. It has started to get unexpectedly "Grumpy" with the engine management dash light coming on and the car surging, refusing to pull or rev over 2000 rpm ,then calming down and acting as normal after a while.
Several trips to local Volvo garages have not found a problem and all that seems to be being done is the battery is disconnected, left a few minutes and then re-connected again which re-sets the dashboard warning light and I get charged £20!
Any thoughts anyone?
I dont want to junk the car as i am some what attached to it.

Open up the fuel pump and injection control relays (their locations vary, and on some cars the two relays are together in one box) and resolder all of the joints on the pc board, especially those to the relay frames. Thermal cycling breaks these joints as the relay coils run hot.

If you are not in a position to resolder, check the relays by substitution.

iv got a Toyota Avensis 2.0tdi R reg '98' manual transmission.

i took it from london to manchester yesterday, around a 200mile drive, and found that when i got there, i started to get a squealing-screeching noise when i accelerate on first and second gear.

sounds to me like the belt has stretched slightly and dried on the long journey. My timing belt, fan belt and air-con belt was changed last may, however, since then, i havent done a long journey like this with my air-con switched on, on the motorway.

i sprayed some wd40 on the drive and air con belt, i think it helped a bit, but the noise is still there. i know that there is a special spray for squeeky drive belts, do these work well?

i also found that the problem of the noise tends to happen 'more' when my air-conditioning is switched on, rather than just the cool air in the cabin.

anyone got any suggestions of what it could be or possible cures?

thanks in advance,
Skiddy Read more

Thanks for that correction. I weighed up in my mind as I wrote it - "dispersant/repellant, repellant/dispersant ?" and then plumped for the wrong one.

Can anyone please advise of an add-on oil pressure guage kit ( as per those available for the 2CV and the Mini ) where the sensor is connected to the guage by wire rather than a pipe? Have done a search but have found only the capilliary type so far.
Any pointers much appreciated. Thanks, Pete. Read more

Thanks to you both. Someone has suggested I look at the VW Golf and the name of TIM products came up there as well. Will have to wait until Monday to make further progress.
Thanks again, Pete.

Wifes 97(P) Corsa seems to stutter (like your taking your foot on and off the accelerator) when you hit about 60mph, it also does'nt seem to be nippy through the gears. It had a service about a month ago, so the plugs are OK, and I changed the HT leads the other day as they were arking (Defo thought this was the problem)

Any thoughts..............

I've also put in a bottle of STP fuel/injector cleaner Read more

Ours plays up if we put Supermarket petrol in it. Only use Shell, Texaco, BP now. No more problems.

Won't use supermarket petrol in any of our cars anymore.

Agreed - so why did they spend taxpayer's money on a pointless exercise?

Question SEAT Leon TDI
Rab355

I have just test driven a 2001 Leon TDI SE. I was unimpressed by the brakes. They felt far less effective than the brakes on my (unmodified)Golf GTI mark 2. Is this the norm or is it the sign of some defect? The service history indicated brake pad replacement some 8000 miles ago. The car felt good in other respects.

The service record indicates that the first service was done at 19,000 miles. Is this acceptable?

HJ's Car-by-Car Breakdown talks of the eventual failure of the ECU on TDI 110 models. Was this problem fixed by a certain date eg before 2001? Read more

Could be a function of the conversion of the basic car from LHD to RHD. There has been a discussion of the conversion problems/features recently on this forum.
