I see that the libdems are reported to be dropping income tax by 2p and funding it by increasing road tax.
" with road tax likely to rise to over £2,000 for the most polluting cars."
Sadly, I suspect 'the most polluting cars' will be those who were first registered before the CO2 emissions were in the V5 as at present. Read more
I have a 03 Astra,my reverse lights do not work.I changed both bulbs as I thought they had blown, but they are still not working.Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be and how do i go about fixing the problem. Thanks Read more
As others have said, more thna likely the switch on the gearbox.
An 03 Astra? Is it under 3 yrs old - get it fixed under the warranty if so.
And I so love the 407 Coupe...

With a big spanner...
I have a 125cc 4 stroke scooter.
I have done 18,000 kms in two years (used daily) and it is soon due for the major service which includes valve clearance check.
My question is, it has been ridden really gently and oil changes have been done every 1000 miles as per the schedule. Spark plug and air filter changed/ cleaned regularly!
What else can I do to prolong the life of the motor?
Thanks for any advise. Read more
I wouldn't say you've had a lot of contradicting advice.
Go by the book and you can't go far wrong.
Bloke listens and says "they're fine" - will he give you a letter saying that if you burn a valve he'll rebuild it as a freebie?
The gaps may well be fine in which case you think you may waste money checking them properly - but what if he's wrong?
Is it just in Surrey the councils are too lazy to clean the roadsigns? Just lately I've noticed how dirty a large majority are, covered in green slime and muck, some almost unreadable. A proportion are also obscured by hedges and overgrown trees.
I tried letting my council know my views through their website, but nothing was ever heard back.
Does your county council spend money cleaning the road signs in your area?

"In fairness to the guy you should .."
While agreeing with all that has been said, this is the time of year when everything green grows at an alarming speed. Even by diverting the bin crews for a week it would be impossible to deal with the new growth round all the signs. And I suspect that faced with this choice, we might prefer our bins emptied? ;o)
I have a Polish speeding fine for 50 quid that I will never >> pay. Just doing my bit to redress the balance.
Hey, smile & ease up a little bit ;)
You'll never be able to redress the balance. Ever.
That's how it works on planet Earth.
You've got my folks over there in Blighty, we've got the Rus and Rom. The Rus got Caucas and Chineese. The Chineese got Mongoleese and God knows who else. It's the wave which doesn't ask anyone for permission, it just does what it does.

I live near the Herts/Beds border. Two days ago I reported one pot-hole in Herts and one in Beds, using the Herts online channel and the Beds e-mail channel. Three cheers: the Herts one was repaired within half a day and the Beds one within a day.
The point of posting this is to show that such reporting is worthwhile and the authorities can be impressively responsive. I know in the Herts case that the online report gets picked up immediately on laptops in the repair trucks.
I try to keep the reports strictly factual, but the term "wheel-breaking pot-hole" is one that does grab attention.

Totally agree TVM
I reported a nasty pothole, especially for cyclists, that had been in existence for weeks, on the crest of Hampton Court Bridge.
Surrey CC were most helpful and said even if it is not our responsibility we will get it sorted.
They did!
I have nothing but praise for Surrey CC in fixing potholes on many many occasions.
I just heard on Radio 4 that 1.2 MILLION people die in road accidents every day around the world.
That is a remarkable number. Read more
I heard the BBC man say per DAY, but the person he was interviewing clearly said per YEAR. Funny that no correction was made. It rather spoiled the point of the article - a million odd per year doesn't sound very many, out of 8 billion.
My book for a toyota previa 2001 D4D doesnt mention where you should place the axle stands, is there anywhere I should be putting them? Read more
Does it have jacking points indicated on the sills?
my Toyota has indents front and rear each side, which the factory jack fits around.
When using axle stands, I locate them slightly inboard (couple of cm at the most) of these areas, on a flat part of the metal sill.
I use wooden blocks to protect the underseal. This has been fine to date on Celicas and MR2s, with no distortion of the floorpan.
Alternatively, locate them under a chassis crossmember, other suspension mounting points (ie where the trailing arms join the car body) or other jacking points mentioned in the manual.
These should be able to take the weight, as they are structural. Again, use wood to cusion/ spread the load.

i am not asking for any illegal advice etc
friend has a '96 mondeo which has not been used for quite a while. he has been ill for 6 months. can't seem to get his car started now. he has been told it may be the immobiliser. unfortunately he does not have the red master key. the only option he has is to visit ford dealers who will charge him an arm and a leg to sort it out.
is there a way he can get it done himself? Read more
Any auto locksmith with the correct software will be able to cut a new master key & code all the keys to the car far cheaper then Ford will, Have a look in the Yellow Pages.
This car needs a RED master key & 2 slave keys to be coded to work correctly.

Lib Dems are just part of the trilateral pantomime that makes people believe there is a democracy. Ignore them.
