My Fiat Marea Weekend 2.4 turbo diesel (88,000 miles) is nearly 9 years old and still has its original exhaust. I thought this was due to high quality manufactured parts. Thinking about this I reasoned that this could also be due to it being a diesel engine rather than a petrol. My question is do diesel exhausts last longer than petrol exhausts?

Hi,
I have a problem with the brakes on my car. It?s a Rover 25 (2001) {added to subject header in an attempt to catch the eye of any Rover experts out there - DD}. Occasionally, perhaps once every ten times, when I apply pressure to the brake pedal I hear a grinding noise, and the brake pedal vibrates slightly. If I release pressure and apply it again, it is usually fine again. When I am hearing the grinding noise the brakes do seem to be applying, but not with quite their normal force.
I?ve had the car looked at, and apparently the brake pads are nearly new.
Any ideas on what might be causing this?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Kind regards,

Thanks Steve, I asked a colleague and he said the same.
I also took him out for a quick drive so he could hear/feel the problem, and he suggested it wasn't necessarily a brake problem, but possibly something connected with the tranmission or similar that is just caused by braking. He said the noise didn't sound like a "brake problem" noise.
Anyway, thanks for all the replies. Once it gets sorted I'll post the resolution, in case anyone has similar issue in the future.
Cheers.
Dylan
I've always thought it'd be a good idea to keep a single-use camera in the car for use after a 'close encounter of the crumpling kind'.
Maybe through fear of pre-empting such an occurrence I've never quite got round to it.
How many BRs do keep one in the car? Although many mobile phones now incorporate a camera of sorts, I vaguely remember reading that digital images have no legal standing because they are so readily manipulated. On top of this, phone batteries have an uncanny knack of being flat when you need them most!
So should I just go to Superdrug and buy a disposable 35mm every few months or so?

And now back to motoring please.

I wish to surprise a friend by buying him a newish car, perhaps 12-18 months old. It must be a modern TDI, 4/5dr, offer very good relaibility and fuel economy and if serviced regularly capable of 300k miles.
Do you guys have any suggestions. My own suggestion would be Skoda Octavia TDI or a Toyota Avensis TDCI but VW relibaility is suspect whereas Toyota is very good. Read more

In May 2005 at 110,000 miles, the internals of the original cat on my Mondeo estate broke up and a replacement was needed. This was duly discussed with my regular independant repair man and we concluded that, as the car was a little long in the tooth, we'd go for a cheap 'pattern' replacement. The replacement cost was £109 plus a portion of the total service bill to fit it. I believe a 'genuine' replacement would have been nearer £300.
After 2 months, the internals failed and the new cat became noisy so a replacement was fitted FOC; then, at 11 months, a leak developed in the flexi bit at the front and again it was replaced FOC. We've now gone over the 12 months guarantee (?) period so now I'm wondering how long this one will last and questioning the wisdom of using a cheap cat on a car (1997) that I'd like to keep going for a few more years yet.
I'd be interested to hear the views and experiences of other Backroomers after replacing cats - particularly in respect of 'pattern' vs original manufacturer. Read more
I used to sell the pattern part cats made by fuel parts at a motor factors i used to work, never really had many problems, some wern't a great fit, but for the price of them you could'nt complain.
Does anyone know where I can get a conversion to make a lap belt in the middle rear seat into a 3 or 4 point belt? I had one of these in my old Mondewoe but it went with the car. I have tried Halfords where we got the last one from but they no longer do them.
Thanks in advance

Well at the age you will be looking at the 9-3
is indistinguishable, externally from the 900 and is still an old model Vectra reskinned.
The 900 / 9-3 is actually based on the 88-95 Cavalier (though called Vectra in Europe) floorplan, it is the 9-5 that is based on the 95-02 Vectra.
Hi all,
I've just bought a Diesel Honda Crv, almost 5 months old, from a Honda Dealer.
The car has 3000 miles on the clock and was, in my opinion, a bargain. When I collected it the saleperson informed me that the director could not release the V5 yet as they had not kept the car as a demonstrater for long enough. Aparently they have to wait 6 months.
So I have a car, reciept and road tax up for renewal soon. They say to drop in the money for the road licence and they will get it for me.
I'm hoping to have a word with them tommorrow about it.
Has anybody else had experience of this?
All comments welcome. Read more
You require a formal letter from the Company detailing the circumstances of the delayed V5. As you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle how did you insure it. A receipt and cover letter can prove ownership but not the Registered Keeper. Regards Peter
Hi
The Mother-in Law has just bought a brand new ford ka, it was delievered today with 2 keys, both black with a small red area to the fob, when I have had fords in the past the car came with a red key which was used to code the other (or subsequent) keys for the imobiliser, (these other keys also were black with a small red area) anyway, should the ka have come with a "red" key or have they changed this
thanks

The Fiestas and above come with the blue dot in the keys, the Ka still have the red dot here. But all come with only 2 keys now.
