I am looking to buy a diesel car up to 3500 in value. should i go for a v reg focus, an r reg golf or a newish skoda or seat vw clone. fuel economy is more important than power and it does needs to be focus sized and a 5 door hatch with aircon. any comments please? Read more

Can't comment on the Focus, but on the Golf go for an Octavia SLX / Elegance. 110bhp and climate control, plus a huge boot.

£3500 gets you a T/V reg one in my area (Bath). Seems high to me, hunt around and try and get a X reg onwards. The reasoning behind that i part exchanged my W reg 120,000 miler for £2k last year.

Toad the beloved Supra has about 13.5 k miles and is M registration. Most of these miles were in Nippon land too, and he only has clocked about 1500 miles in the last three or four years in the good (?) old UK.

A relative who is looking at a ban, after accumulating 12 points, has been sent a letter in which they are invited to make any statement in mitigation, enclose driving licence and a huge form requesting detailed financial information. Quite what this has to do with a court I do not know or is it something to do with setting a level of fine ie less for the poor than the rich? They were required to produce details of income, savings, household costs, savings, amounts spent on holidays, clothes and similar for partner (if any). This strikes me as an unwarranted intrusion on personal privacy - we are talking a motoring offence, not fraud, tax evasion, VAT fraud, fraudulent benfit claims etc. Not wishing to antagonise the court the details were given, rather than a request for an explanation of why this information was needed, its relevance to the matter before the court and information as to where it would be stored, for what purpose and for how long. Relative points out that the information requested is more than their own bank knows about their finacial affairs! Read more

There were some outragiously stupid and totally eccentric fines. I remember one case, a head-teacher fined for minor motoring offence, guilty plea some ace mitigation (cough cough) find a quid and endorsed. Same court, same offence on self employed builder (not Mr Barrart iykwim) same ace mitigating (variation 3.6) find £200.00 quid same endorsement. No aggrivating circs, purely down to "means" I would hazard a guess that their gross income was within a grand.

I caught the tail end of this program today after watching the BTCC. A Mother was selling a Corsa for her Son who was away on holiday. She offered the prospective buyer a test drive without checking for insurance, in fact the buyers Daughter drove the car and I doubt the young driver has DOC. The Mother after the test drive also pointed out she would discount the car as the Tax had run out. So no insurance and no tax. Great !! and the TV program allowed that to happen. DOOOOOHH. The Half Way House petrol station (corner of Middleton Road and Bury Old Road) has just started selling biodiesel at 88.9ppl. It's a small old site and the nearest station is a Shell with regular diesel at 94.9ppl I think, which is surprisingly low for recent times in our area. It's been up to 98.9ppl in the last month.

I filled up the Trajet today and noticed that the fuel is a murky brown colour and foams up more. I'll keep you informed. The saving of 6ppl makes the lack of Pluspoints or ability to use Amex worth it; especially if the ecomony improves, even by 2%.

With higher oxygen content, biodiesel should burn more efficiently and slightly more powerfully than derv - however this is usually offset by the lower density of biodiesel. On average, fuel economy should show very little variation, but pure biodiesel (B100) may be 2-3% worse in terms of miles per gallon. Having said that, it can also vary from car to car - my old 525td used to do a lot better on biodiesel than on derv, whereas my Leon does maybe 1-2 mpg worse. Passat seems about the same on either fuel, in spite of having the same engine as the Leon.
The appropriate standard for pure biodiesel is European - EN14214. Prior to its introduction the only official standard available in Europe was the German one, DIN51606.

Hi all
Well as you know or don't know my car failed it's mot and as I was looking on www.honestjohn.co.uk I noticed something about the top 10 garages and this was one of them , so after taking my car in they were good enough to show me what the car failed on told me the cost , The work which I had done plus it went in a week later for some other bits and did not break the bank , I can only say what a garage they want you to come back .

Would anyone know if tranferring a personal plate from one vehicle to another can be quick (i.e days, rather than months). I have transfered once before, but retained the number first, putting the old car back onto original plates, before taking the new vehicle to the DVLA to get re-registered. I don't mind doing this again, but it was a long wait for the retention document to be processed.

Has anyone transferred from one vehicle to another a faster way. Dealers seem reluctant to do the swap for you on used vehicles, and it is a used car I am interested in buying.

Never had a problem with it. Pop to local LVLO (who are well used to PU visits with strange requests) all done over the counter, never ever had any trouble.

Hi there

I bought a bmw z4 3 years ago for 30k. It was ex-demo, 6ooo miles.

It has been in and out of the garage for the last three years with mostly minor repairs - but a few major. All of these have been covered by the 3 year warranty which runs out this month. The car has been in and out of the garage so much in the last 3 years that i have lost touch of the number of times that i have take it to the garage. Not what i would expect from a premium value car at a premium price.

What are my rights?

my tactic is to wait for a new member to post
a few times before biting. there have been 3 or 4
such cases very recently, where i would have bitten, but waiting

The new Dwightmobile arried before my old Car Insurance expired and with only a month left NFU required me to take out a 13 month Certificate instead of simple amendie Reg No.

On the bits and pieces that arrived with the new Insurance was a note to the effect that because of MIB database no longer will Cover Notes of Insurance be issued and if premium is not paid before exiry date of Certificate then use beyond will not be covered unlike the old Cover Note scheme.

Whilst I can see the reasoning because of ANPR is this now universal with all Insurance Companies?. If so haven't seen it mentioned here and elsewhere.

I've just got my MoreThan renewal. Leaflet inside says:

"In the past it has been common practice within the insurance industry to allow a temporary certificate of insurance, often seen as a 'grace period', of 14 days cover after the renewal date of a motor insurance policy. This practice was introduced to help avoid any gaps arising in a customer's cover after they had expressed an intention to renew. However, it has often been wrongly interpreted as an additional period of time in which a policyholder may conclude the renewal of their motor insurance. For the MID to fulfil its role, the data it holds must be accurate and up to date. This means that the temporary certificate of insurance is now being withdrawn from the renewal process. In order to comply with the requirements of the MID, we must advise that your insurance will lapse automatically om the date of expiry quoted on your current certificate of insurance.
