Looking for a dirt cheap TD (ideally one I can swap my J plate 318i auto for)..

Need decent (i.e. 40mpg or higher) economy, other than that not fussed...

So far I've thought of 205, Corsa, Mondeo, Astra..
thing is I really have no idea what I really want! lol

Any suggestions based on owner experiences? Read more

I had a 205 STDT for nearly two years and loved it, the only downside for me was the manky brown velour interior.

A friend has been rear-ended recently and has had an engineer out from her insurance company, who has basically told her the car will be written off.
He also asked how much she paid for it, and was told £700. She has been sent an engineers report letter, which states that he's advising the insurer that she should be paid £700.
Is it fair enough that they reimburse her the cost of the car to her, or should they be paying whatever it would cost to properly replace it? (Their is only one similar car within 40 miles on Autotrader, and it's £895) Read more

Funnily enough they were picked on price by SWMBO and they are internet based so I wasn't expecting too much from them but they stood up to the test.

Hire car was provided within 36 hours once they decided car was unroadworthy, car was collected and assessed within five days. Agreed value last Friday, cheque has arrived this morning, agreed to us keeping hire car while we look for replacement, up to the end of next week. Going out to test drive something tomorrow.
Only fly in the ointment was SWMBO didn't think the offer of a Beetle was suitable replacement for a Vectra and eventually settled for a Golf, which she really hates to drive, she reckons the driving position is like driving a bus!

Whether they would have been quite so accomodating if the other party hadn't been bang to rights by coming out of a side turning across give way markings and signs I can't judge.

As you suggest I will name and praise because, on this occasion, price and internet delivered, so, stand up and take a bow esure.com.

I have a tow bar fitted to my golf mk 3 and i want it gone. It has two plugs on it. I think it is bolted on to the chassis not welded. The only thing i am unsure about is the electrical side of removing it.
Can i just cut the wire? or will this play havoc with cars electrics? Can i put them in some sort of cable connector and tape them off after? Or can i trace them back to there original point and disconnect them there(not that i know where it is)

or is it a cheap job at the garage? Read more

The presence of the second [supplementary] socket really makes this a garage job. The normal 7-pin will be bodged on to the rear light wiring and is fairly easy to follow back and disconnect; the other socket contains permanently live power and charging feeds all the way from the front of the car.

Those have some disaster potential if you get it wrong, so it's probably worth paying a garage [or a sparks] for half an hour to rip them out for you.

My father is looking to change cars.

He's going to be downsizing from a Rover 620 to one of the following.

Toyota Corolla 1.6 SR 5DR
Citroen C4 1.6 VTS + 5 DR

I've read that the Corolla is to be replaced next year, so I think it may be unwise to go for the Corolla. I'm going to part ex my 306 cabriolet, so far i've been offered anything from 4.2k to 5.2k for my car from various dealers.

The car is going to be used for mainly town journeys and the occasional motorway trip on the M4 Bristol-London.

One Toyota dealer told me to come back to him last to get the best price for cost to change (for a brand new one). He couldn't give me a price for my car as he needed to underwrite the value??

I thought that most dealers used the glass guide to work out value. What I don't understand is how can another value the car when they haven't even seen it!? Or is it a case that Toyota dealer will sell to Peugeot dealer? (Maybe Blue Haddock can elighten me).

I have found plenty of deals for the Citreon (which doesn't suprise me) But I can't find a single deal for the Toyota even though its going to be replaced next year. Unless they are planning on having a massive sale at the end of the year??

So far my father and myself can't work out what to go for (we'll both drive the car) We like both cars so can't work out which will be best over 3 years.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks

Did it do 50 mpg?

On a run at 65mph, will do it easy, and better. Steady 80mph got me about 45mpg. Round town, can't get better than 36mpg.

Only done 4000 miles, so engine still tight maybe?

Two incidents today..

1. Near Knutsford (home of northern version of Footballers Wives) and attempting to exit a field onto a minor road with very restricted view. I see a large car coming from my right. Footballer's Wifey thing in the drivers seat. She stops, but only to let people coming past in the opposite direction, as I am slightly out in the road to get any sort of view. As the other cars go past, she wellies it. She could have let me go?

2. M60 North Manchester going down and up Death Valley from west to east in a four lane section. LHD HGV in Lane 2 is unable to get into Lane 1 because middle aged woman in Megane Estate is sitting in Lane 1 at 56mph and the HGV driver cannot overtake to get past her nor slow down to get behind her as there is no gap behind her. (I'm behind him). She pulls off at J17 and he immediately pulls into Lane 1, showing that he was a caring sort. Woman must have been blind. I would not want to sit in the motorway about two feet from an HGV in the next lane.

>Roundabout is clear , bus goes over, guy in front of me goes left .

Common practice in N.Hants and Berks. Along with a right turn from the LH lane.

However, the guy you observed was not a true practioner, he should have cut across the front of the bus.

I think the correct procedure for each manoeuvre is described in the "Basingstoke Ammendment to the Highway Code" but so far I've been unable to obtain a copy. The best place to study this is the Winchester Road roundabout during morning and evening commute hours. It is especially entertaining when the vehicle in the LH lane intends to turn right and the one in the RH lane intends to turn left.

These manoeuvres are only suitable for advanced drivers though. About two years ago I witnessed a woman on the school-run fluff a 1-2 gearchange and found a Sainsburys truck in her passenger seat. Luckily the kids were belted-up in the back and the only injury appeared to be a nasty cut as a result of the girl's head hitting the side window.

This is on the list of lease vehicles available for my new job. The lease price is about £250 a month, this is dramatically cheaper than a non Trident merc C220, does anyone know what the Trident bit means, is it motability or similar. I've done a search and couldn't find anything out?

Thanks

Last week I left my home in Kent and had a week's holiday over in North Devon. I used the A303 as the main route, rather than the M4. Remember it was a Bank Holiday on Monday and it was also school half term.

What struck me noticably was there were plenty of caravans on the roads, but none were being driven slowly and holding up traffic. On main A roads they were being driven quickly, about 50 mph on two way roads and close to 60 mph on dual carriageway sections.

We all moan at being held up by caravans, but last week I was pleasantly surprised - so I have to ask are there 2 types of caravan drivers? Those with young children who have places to go, rather than the older ones with time on their hands who are oblivious to other road users needs.

What do you think?

WipeOut

Yes, ridicule me, I drive a big 4*4 and tow a caravan. Oh the shame, horror of it all.

I don't hold up traffic, in fact with my big 4*4 diesel I wish some drivers (particularly those Rover drivers in ironic Racing Green with AA badges on the front) would get a move on as you are holding me up!

Everybody behind me thinks it's a caravan holding up the traffic, but it's you slow solo driver.

One particular pleasure I have while towing is racing the Chav's in the lowered Saxo's and Corsa's with ridiculously large and unnecessary down forcers. The look on there face when they can't keep up with a caravan is worth the usual ridicule of towing. I hope the draught from my caravan causes there the downforcer to flip the car off the road and on to it's roof, therefore keeping the road free of your unnecessary nuisance.

I know BackRoomers have often asked who to report 'scrap' or 'abandoned' cars to - should it be the police, the DVLA, the council....

Well it looks like there is a breakers who will sort your problems on a nod and a wink

Where the tenants out ?

Statistical outlier

Question for you chaps.

I'm the paranoid type, and I never trust garages to change things when they say they have. I can't find the oil filter on my CDTi Accord, which just had it's first service at a main dealer. So, first question, could anyone tell me which panel it's under?? (I never thought I would struggle to find an oil filter!)

Second question - how clean should I expect the oil to be after 10 miles driving? It's not filthy, but it's definitely already started to blacken a bit. Do I assume that this is residual oil in the engine after the drain, or is the cynic in me right that the filter change might have been skipped?

I'll stop being paranoid now.

Cheers,

Gord. Read more
