Question Vectra Idle
trickynicky

My 1997 V6 Vectra has developed an irritating idle fault. When coming to a halt the tickover sometimes drops to 250 rpm and then recovers, or drops to 250 rpm and then the engine stalls. Restarts ok and ticks over ok.It sometimes does it after idling ok for a while as well. Also, when turning on the air con, the normal slight rise and fall in rpm, is sometimes 500 rpm or so. Recent coil pack change to cure continuous misfire 2 months ago. I have cleaned out the idle air valve a couple of times but I'm not sure that it had much effect. Any ideas? Read more

Forum Honda Jazz
Geffers

Hi
My Honda dealer says that the Jazz is built in Japan. He also says that the Jazz engine cam shaft has a belt drive.
Is this correct?
Many thanks Read more

I was made in Japan!? I should really be more reliable.

Simon (Anne\'s Other Half)

Hi,
Firstly, thanks for all the help with the thread on my 306 HDi.
Due to my current problems with the Pug (see the thread in the Technical Forum) I've been offered another car as an option.
If I want it I need to make an offer, otherwise it goes to auction.

Can someone tell me what the following is worth at auction please? Also what the work would cost to get done.

Volvo V40 'Classic' '03 Reg
1.9 Diesel 'S' 115BHP
122,000 miles
Full Volvo Service Handbook

It needs the following work:
New discs & pads all round
New headlight
New drivers seatbelt.
125k Service

It was my old company car - I've since left the firm but am still friends with the fleet manager, so that's how I know the miles are mainly motorway, and about the repairs.

Thanks

S reg 2.0l auto saloon petrol

Today I suffered a significant fuel leak from the tank area.

The car was at full operating temperature with approx 2 gall left in the tank. I had just filled up the tank and had then driven to a car park to park for a few hours.
Having parked, I then immediately got a big whiff of petrol.
There was a trail of spots along my track and a puddle underneath. I could see petrol dripping off the back, sort of the middle of the tank. It was certainly originating from off the top of the tank somewhere. I was not inclinded to take too close a look.
I decided to move off immediately from adjacent vehicles to the large empty area of the carpark and drive round while mulling over the situation and to see if it stopped.
My first thought was that it was a hot day and the petrol was cold so it might be expanding.
I realised how cold the petrol was because there was no plastic cover on the pump handle and my hand was quite cold after 10 plus gallons.

I tried stopping briefly several times in the carpark but it was still dripping.
Having lots of time on my hands I decided to go for a spin on decent roads in the countryside to try using up /lowering the fuel. Eventually after several stops and 40 plus miles later it stopped dripping.
I have now travelled 70 miles home and there is no sign of a drip.

This problem may have been around for some time.
I usually fill up before setting off on at least a 50 mile trip.
I have just checked, since arriving home, that after a mile or two from cold there is, as I expected, a significant hiss when undoing the filler cap so something is working correctly.

Any suggestions on how to progress / fix it or do I hand it over to the guys at ihe impending service?

I have looked at the Haynes manual for ideas.
There are two roll-over valves, an anti-trickle fill valve and a small pipe joining them all. All these items are in the right sort of area.
Haynes says remove the tank first before dealing with them.
I am hoping it is just a pipe come off.

When fixed it should improve my fuel consumption a bit.

My further thoughts.
I may have inadvertantly over filled it but on second thoughts at 30mpg I would have had to have put in over a gallon more than ever before to do 40 miles before the drips stopped.

At the filling station, one of the major chains, I gave up at the first pump due to trigger kicking back at each of about 4 attemps so that was just over 1 gallon.
I then moved to another pump.
I would not be surprised if this pump was faulty too.
I have never seen such grotty pumps in a UK filling station.
I complained to the operator that I could not read the display as the plastic cover over the LCDs was brown, I guess from age/UV.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned something spotted on the very useful moneysavingexpert.com web site.

www.gemoney.co.uk/html/creditcard/everyday_creditc...l

This is a credit card that pays three per cent cashback on fuel and groceries, or, to be precise, purchases from petrol stations and food retailers.

I've applied for one, which probably means it's jinxed. It'll be my third cashback card: the others either drastically reduced the rate or stopped offering cashback altogether.

Still worth considering while it's there. Postings on the above site suggest that they are cherry-picking their customers but it's not clear what criteria they're using. Read more

No FM2R

But then you could get the 3% off AND use the pedal carefully.

Hi,

i remember reading an article on this website about how insecure the doorlocks are on vw cars. I believe it covers cars built around 2002 era. where someone can use a screwdriver to open windows.

can someone please direct me to the article.

bro in law just bought a 2002 passat and wanted to know more about this design flaw Read more

Do these plates go inside? or are they a hideous 'handle embellishment'? :)
Apparantly what happens is they stick a thin screwdriver in a certain place to press the microswitch that is pressed by the key.
You can disable the windows opening with VAG COM software, as well as other features such as autolocking doors when you set off can be switched off/on, but to be honest I hope the crock of stools gets stolen anyway.

Had the belts changed on my 1.9DT Xsara a few months back - now there's a bit of squealing when load is put on the power steering when cold.

Is it easy enough to tension the belt myself? Kinda difficult to drop back into the garage as I'm 300 miles away.

Cheers,

David. Read more

There are several different layouts of XUDT acc belts, depending on the age of the car, and the accessories fitted. In principle they are all tensioned the same though I think. You will need to jack up remove the driver's side wheel and wing liner. You should now be able to see the crank pulley, acc belt, and tensioner in front of the crank pulley - a large idler wheel with an arm pointing downwards. There are two bolts holding the tensioner on - one on the arm, one in the centre of the pulley (they're allen screws unfortunately!). Slacken the screws off then wind out the adjuster screw at the bottom of the arms to tighten the belt - it should go OK since its been disturbed recently.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

A main Vauxhall dealership proposes to sell us a pre registered car but owing to the tax incentive they receive for holding on to the car for 90 days after they have first registered it, they have indicated that they will not forward the log book to DVLA (to have our name transferred onto the registration document) until the 90 day period has expired. This will be approx. 30 days after we are expected to pay the balance and take physical possession of the vehicle. Two issues arise. Firstly, we run the risk of having paid for something that we may not own for 1 month and secondly insurers will not explicitly cover a car for which we are not the registered keeper. Has anyone else come across this and if so any ideas?? Read more

PCP is short for personal contract purahcse - basically a priavte lease scheme where you pay a monthly payment and after a set period you either pay to buy the vehicle or swap it for a new one. During the hire period the vehicle belongs to the lease company although you are the registered keeper.

A dealer is unlikely to tell you he is using a dodgy fleet code so would refer to it as a demo scheme or a tax incentive. Do not worry too much though this is the way most pre-reg cars are registered and sold.
