Number plates - mss1tw
Adam's post got me thinking - are we the only country to have the style plates we do?

Every other country I can think of has metal, square plates that look totally different to ours.

There seem to be two types of general number plate - "US" style which is the square metal type and "European" style which is wider. For some reason Belguim uses the smaller style whilst the rest of Europe uses wider ones like ours.

Some coutries in Europe still have metal embossed type but others such as France seem to have changed to plastic bonded like ours.

The only country which I can think of in Europe which as number plates exactly the same as ours is Cyprus.

I think I am right in saying that in the USA, you get a plate for you, and not the car, so when you buy a new car, you simply swap plates.

Is the UK the only country where all new number plates have to use the latest style letters and figures, so older vehicles now look ridiculous if a new plate is needed?

I thought older vehicles were allowed to fit replacements in the style current when they were new? I certainly am permitted to fit raised aluminium letters on a matt black background to my 1964 Triumph.
I thought the shape of the plate merely reflected the car's design and whichever shape fitted the available space between the lights etc better.
I've had cars in the past with square plates both at the back and, sometimes, at the front. Motorbikes used to have elegant double-sided curved plates on the front mudguard.
Cars in the 30s and 40s often had rear plates framed inside illuminated glass-fronted boxes, incorporating lenses at each end for stop, tail and reversing lights.

Have a look at this site to see what number plates you can fit different age cars. Yes they even do the old embossed metal plates and the curved motorbike plates.
