Car

Whilst looking for a new used car to me I've noticed some of them have been on sale at the dealers for 3 months or more.

Nothing appears to be wrong with these cars and are comparatively priced against others.... Read more

Just been looking on the HJ article about issues with the new 1.5 TSi engine. At the end it says

"With the launch of the 1.5-litre engine, Volkswagen bucked the downsizing trend by replacing a 125PS 1.4 four-cylinder unit with a 1.5 four-cylinder producing 150PS."... Read more

But I will possibly be tempted by a 2.0 TSi next time providing I can get one with a manual box. At present only Skoda seem to offer this combination in the Octavia and my experience testing 4 of those (3 petrols and a diesel - 2 DSG and 2 manual) makes me never want to drive another (unless the new model due later this year is a vast improvement).

I have to say that my 2.0 TSI with its 6 speed DSG has been fun to date. I know, I know....

Hi,

My insurance is coming to an end within the coming months and looking to buy a new car. I only have around £1000 to spend at the most. I've narrowed it down to an early 2000s Almera 1.5 or a Seat Leon 1.6 of the same era. I considered the 2nd gen focus and Mazda 3 based on the same platform but after more research wasn't so sure anymore. I'll be 21 a month after the insurance expires so insurance will still be a fairly major factor as well.... Read more

Ford were by far the best and creating excellent handling front wheel drive cars at the time, from Ka to Mondeo they were far superior to rivals certainly Nissan at the time.

This was thanks to the genius of Richard Parry-Jones. It was very, very unusual for a major manufacturer like Fod to put so much emphasis or ride/handling, that was down to him. At around the same time, maybe a bit earlier, Vauxhall were going in the opposite direction with their 'sneeze test'(!). Where a driver at 70mph could sneeze without deflecting the car's course!. Made sense in a way, but didn't make for great drivers cars with the dullness of their reactions.

Zafira 09 plate. I have had trouble in the past with the warning light for the pre heat glo plugs.

For some unknown reason it stays on flashing. Eventually it will go off (normally) this time however it has stayed on and there is a smell of burning, and a rattle in the engine compartment. The car was put on the diagnostics at my local garage the last time it happened. And was supposedly been fixed, Here we go again. would appreciate any advice, on this matter, Could ignoring it cause damage.?... Read more

I looked up the prices of the 2.0 on a internet discount site (uk car discount). Way too expensive! Make no sense at all. Should be 20% cheaper Read more

A very attractive car in every respect, but the extra cost of the hybrid system over normal cars in the same class does not make sense.

Mother in law has a 2009 Kia Rio 1.4 petrol (Ironically she has just ordered a brand new Hyundai i10, but won't get it till about the 18th of next month!), but starting recently there has been a strong smell of petrol in the car. I have not had the chance to inspect it myself yet, but according to her there is no leakage of petrol on her drive or whatever. At the same time, she did mention recently that the car didn't seem to be going as far before she topped up the fuel. I find it hard to believe these two things are not connected, but can't imagine how there would be no eveidence of leaking. Could the fuel could be leaking out of the tank but ending up somewhere else in the car?.

Does that seem possible, or does anyone have any other ideas what might be going on?.... Read more

Are you sure it is a the seam itself - could be above eg where the sender/pump are fastened to the tank and then after sloshing around any petrol leaking past gaskets/seals will find their way south and ultimately dripping of any points/lips/seams etc. Worth having a look for access panels (possibly under the rear seat base) and seeing if there is evidence of petrol here.

Just a thought....

I know there have been a lot of problems with the Citroen/Peugeot/BMW/Mini 1.6 THP petrol engine: chain tensioner, (turbo?) and carbon deposits. Is there a safe date after which they can be considered reliable? In particular, I'm looking at a 2013 C4 Picasso with 1.6 THP - worth buying or better to avoid? Thanks! Read more

Can't today's mechanics, after taking an accurate present and past mechanical history, arrive at a working diagnosis using their eyes, ears and occasionally nose these days? I presume a fuel pipe was disconnected to confirm the diagnosis of a failed petrol pump, or its blown fuse? It would be very unusual to have two immobilising faults occurring simultaneously.
