Hi. Just brought the above car with 72K on a 56 plate. It seemed OK but then I changed the coolant, which was filthy. This has changed the environment within the engine which has loosened whatever was in there and now I have a serious cooling problem along with a tickover issue which I think are both related. The tickover cycles and changes every couple of seconds. When the car is as hot as the electric fan will allow it to be the tickover hits about 1000 rpm, fan kicks in and the tickover returns to what it was...rythmically cycling between 500-800 rpm. It also won't hold higher revs upto 1400-1500, I suspect EGR as when I unplug it nothing changes apart from the "spanner" light coming on. EGR is influenced by coolant and when I removed the water pump the channel that recieves coolant from the heater matrix was dry and pink. The EGR also "pops" about 30 seconds after startup so could be knackered.

When I removed the water pump there was massive amounts of excess Instant Gasket around the joints with the timing cover and I could some had broken of. After about 3 days flushing the heater core and about 100 gallons of water I eventually got a load rubbish out...two lumps of instant gasket and what I'm sure is Bars Leak rubbish.... Read more

I had a blocked heater radiator on one of these. I spent a few hours flushing and reverse flushing the radiator via the hoses and shifted loads of muck but it took a while. Go one way then the other alternately

Does anyone have experience with early Cortina 1500 GT? Everything is very new and clean but my oil pressure is very low ( 0 to 5 psi) for the first 30-60 seconds on restart after sitting a few days. New high pressure pump acts same as old standard one but now 60 psi & still running strong after pressure is up. Pump feeds remote HP-1 filter then routed to oil cooler and back through -8 tubing. 20W50 at 20 C temperature may move slowly at first getting to pressure sender at front of motor? Or can oil drain away from pump and lack of priming be the fault? Read more

Did have a concern on one of my engines where on the first cold start with fresh oil(20W/50 in summer-10W/30 in winter)the pressure relief valve would stick open for several seconds and allow the oil to return to the sump.I usually left the sender switch on the front position and the pressure gauge connected from by the engine mount.

How do you disconnect the head light unit multi pan power connector. Regards Peter Read more

There’s a locking tag half way down the plug on one side. You need to press this down while disconnecting the plug , but don’t pull on it until the tag is released.

I have very recently bought a Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT and I'm just getting used to the noises it makes.
Overall, the engine seems very quiet. However, I have noticed a different noise when accelerating. I've been thinking about how best to describe it. Maybe a bit like the sound of hot water going through a radiator at home, a sort of tinkling shhing sound. It does not make this sound in N, only D and I can't hear it in S, possibly as the engine is noisier? This is with all aircon / fans etc off, and it doesn't go away once the engine warms up.
It sounds as though it's coming from towards the left of the engine bay.
Is it normal?
Thanks Read more

Sounds like: the cooling system is underfilled and air bubbles are being transported around the cooling system. Check the coolant level with a cold engine.

Check the CVT oil level....

Good thinking Bromptonaut. It is a drag going down the peninsula to Campbelltown, even if you are exploring around Inverary, Lochgilphead etc. You can cross over to Dunoon and shorten the drive and that too is a picturesque run through to Inverary.

Worth the journey for a night or two to stay and explore. The Mull of Kintyre is spectacular as is Machrahanish. My uncle Jim used to play golf at Machrahanish and regularly partnered Sean Connery when he visited the area for golf. Happy travels....

Hi all,

I've had the engine coolant light come on my Golf; quite unexpected but on checking the reservoir it's certainly low (below min). Obviously this suggests that there's a leak somewhere in the system and that I need to get it to a garage, but just two quick questions:... Read more

You can clean and re-shim diesel injectors. I was taught how to do it when I worked for a diesel engine manufacturer - it's not particularly complicated as long as you work clean, you just need a pop-tester for conventional injectors, some shims, and a set of nozzle cleaning wires and the knowledge of what the spray pattern should look like and the sound of the injector on the tester.

Advise contacting Diesel Bob to ask his advice - good bloke, tells it like it is, knows his stuff, one man band workshop with all the right kit....

As part of one of one of my university modules, I have created a hypothetical new product idea of a magnetic car door protector available in various sizes/shapes depending upon the car. It is made from recycled felt that can attach to your car doors, preventing scratches/dents.

This primary research should not be completed by people under the age of 18 and it is preferred if you own or use a car.

The data collected will be anonymous and will only be used as part of a university research product, adhering to SHU Research Ethics Policy.
