On these engines you might want to check the fuel filter first if you dont have a error code.
A few years ago came across a 1.6 diesel that had no code, no fuel delivery issue but wouldn't start, but would crank. Couldn't fix it and it wasn't my car. The guy who owned the car is a former buddy of mine and didn't seem to want to tell me what the actual fix was. He told me that the ECU needed a reboot or something like that wich i think is crap.
Get a good diagnostic tool, Delphi seemd to work good on these cars with detailed data. Maybe your fix is way more simple If you just do a scan.

Having been on the wrong side of Insurance Companies and having my insurance voided through a careless error in filling out an online comparison application, I decided to start a government petition to try to get insurance voids time limited.

Insurance voids can happen for many reasons, careless errors, unintentional omissions, financial difficulty, negligence, black box insurance contraventions. It's fair to punish offenders but not for life, this needs to be time limited like penalty points on a license.... Read more

BUT, why not bring back that requirement, and the requirement to have an insurance certificate and (if needed) mot certificate in the vehiclle.

The removal of tax discs hasn't helped either....

The itch to replace my Logan (now just coming up to three years old) with an older semi-classic estate is presenting itself again! I have spotted a 1988 Merc W124 at a local specialist, who I know through using them when I had my CLK.

They know the car having serviced it, and it looks in good nick, with 120,000 miles and a good history. Its the 2.3 petrol auto estate and is 4k.... Read more

Maybe a third car!?

My experience of third car ownership is that the least used car tends to get very little use, which in turn means it needs more brake work, battery condition charging, faffing about with covers (depending on its type) opening closing windows etc to keep it free from moisture, and because you don't use it you use it less because of said faff, then you have three insurances road taxes ongoing maintenance and MOT tests all to pay for before you've even turned a wheel.

Irony

Cleggy - a case to answer.

Having some trouble understanding this. The car was sold with a 3mth warranty which suggests it was over 3yrs old at time of purchase. Indeed, the questioner says it was purchased with an MOT.

Isn't emissions part of the MOT test? If the DPF had been cut in half and internals removed, should the car have passed an MOT?

It may well have been something that was overlooked on the MOT, but questioner had been driving the car for 6mth / 8000miles without error.

If this were taken to court, I'd expect the garage to say the car was legal at the time of sale, (using MOT as evidence?) suggesting the DPF was tampered with afterwards.

It's unfortuate, but I just don't see how the questioner could win his/her case. Besides, six months from purchse, doesn't the onus fall on the purchaser to prove the fault existed? How is he/she going to do that?

Suzuki Ignis : Diminution is generally only successful on prestige and exotic cars of high value. You will find it impossible to find a law firm who are prepared to take on a claim for diminution on a car that would only cost £10,000 to purchase new, although I understand your frustrations that you value your car the same if not more than someone who drives a £60,000 Porsche.

What percentage of the above cars are bought by Day Rent Companies?

How many are bought by private buyers? - Very few I suspect. Read more

REF DW & his 3008 Puretech 130 - Depending on the age of the car it might be due a software update for the engine ecu. There's has been a software update campaign for the older Puretech 130's that Peugeot / Citroen main dealers will carry out when you take the car in for a service / other work.

Either ask your main dealer / UK customer service OR check your vin on Service Box as it will tell you if your car requires a main dealer visit.

As a 308 Puretech 130 owner myself, I agree with HJ that it certainly doesn't lack torque. Read more

I agree completely.

We have 2012/62 Nissan Note 1.5dci bought new (93k miles) It has been regularly maintained and any problems sorted straight away with a local independant garage. Thank fully those problems have been few and far between (timing belt at 70k mls, a/c radiator,). Main issue has been tyres (Original Contis lasted 27k miles, then Dunlops at 20k mls and present Michelins after ca 47k mls. These will be replaced soon with - yes - Michelins....

I have been looking at the reviews on this site for my next car and have noticed that most of the bad points on cars seem to be related to diesel cars.

I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this. Is it just a coincidence that the cars I happened to view had these issues, or is this the general rule? Read more

Thank you all for that great advice, I think I will stick with petrol after that.

I shall carry on looking now, which I think is the best thing about buying a car, and I can add the Verso to my search....

I drive an ‘04 MG ZR 1.4 and everything was fine until about 12 months ago when I had to get a new exhaust fitted. After then I noticed that the fumes being emitted from the car had gone up by a really noticeable amount - and then when it went for its MOT in summer it passed absolutely fine (as it always has), but the guy said that as the rules are changing it’s going to fail next time because of the emissions.

While the new exhaust seems to me to be the likely suspect somehow, nobody whom I’ve spoken to, including mechanics, can think of why. It’s been checked and it is fitted properly. It was quite a cheap exhaust I had put on - could an upgrade to a better one fix the issue?

I know it’s an old car, and it has done a fair few miles, but I really like it and it’s so incredibly reliable I’d hate to have to scrap it because of something like this.

Many thanks. Read more

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, to clarify, it just smells more - there is some smoke - white in colour - but not an excessive amount.

Is there any way to check the exhaust to make sure that it is actually the problem?

So my 5 year old Powershift Gearbox recently tried to kill itself. Led me to finding lots of complaints and issues about this gearbox and finding out about the successful class actions in USA, Australia and Canada.

Ford wanted to replace my gearbox for big £'s but I have found someone, who more or less makes a living off fixing powershifts, who will repair it for a lot less than Ford wants... (he also told me he thinks there are two design faults in the gearbox... so he thinks my gearbox will break again, in time... If I service it more often than the recommended 3 yearly then I will extend the life but the box will fail again as it has a fatal flaw in it's design).... Read more

Experiencing transmission warning light on 66 ford kuga and weird behaviour. Sudden loss of power whilst driving then sudden surge of power. Nothing you can do about it at the wheel until it comes back to you by itself, very dangerous in the moment.

Ford garage doesn't want to know claiming they've never heard of problem, but when pointed out its all over Internet with cases won legally by claimants they had a look and but found no issues in the electronic log as events appear to cancel themselves when ignition turned off....

The car in question is a 2-litre petrol 165PS with stop-start.

My 2014 example will need a new battery at some point. I'm trying to find out if it's a DIY job or not. Various Mazda owners' forums aren't being much help. One chap is suggesting the stop-start system will need re-setting after a new battery is fitted. If so, how? All I have the option to turn it on or off.... Read more
