Hi all, my son's Vauxhall Corsa C has been SORN for 12 mths (laid up with 6mths MOT and fully drivable) and has the usual rust on discs. Its booked for an MOT next Tuesday. Do I just drive it round the back roads until the brakes are quiet and the rust is scrubbed off prior to MOT or should I be replacing pads, shoes and taking discs off and cleaning them? I'm kind of thinking I'll be lambasted for suggesting the above yet realistically isnt this what everyone does?! I can insure the car but cant tax as it has no MOT. Read more

Hi

I need some advice on a brand new 2017 Mercedes i brought in May from one of the big named dealership groups that now has rust on every single panel and been damaged by the dealership. I informed the dealership of the original rust issues via email within 14 days of purchase. It's been back to dealer twice for repair but the rust keeps coming back. After the second attempt the dealership were no longer interested in fixing the rust problem nor the rubbers and plastics they damaged in the process. (The sale manager during all this did apologise saying the car should never of been sold to me in the condition it was with rust etc.)... Read more

The dealer certainly is responsible but if the car is the subject of a regulated credit agreement then MBFS will be jointly and severally liable. They will of course ask you to get it sorted by the dealer but there is nothing in law to prevent you going for them alone, especially if the dealer is no longer being helpful.

If you issue proceeedings against MBFS then no doubt they will join the dealer (by whom MBFS will be indemnified anyway) in the action but they cannot evade responsibility.

I was driving a hired van down a B-Road in the countryside third in a line of four vehicles at approximately 50mph. Suddenly and without warning the first car in the line braked heavily, causing an accordian effect in the traffic. The car directly in front of me and myself followed suit. While still under braking I was struck from behind by another car and which overpowered my ABS and sent me skidding into the back of the car in front.

The three drivers in the crash all exited our vehicles. The driver who caused the crash by standing on his brakes (but was not hit) then sped off. Given the shock no one got his number plate. ... Read more

I have been the middle car in that situation where the car behind pushed me into the car in front - I was able to establish that fact as the driver behind told the truth - if they don't I guess you have to accept part-liability.

I love the fact that they advertise 'Passports, auriginal and false'.

Hi All

I had to switch to the shorter filters when I ran our Peugeot 504 and then the same with the 505's with no problems. The memories are now flooding back of our early adventures in the seven seaters....I still have a bent conrod in my garage from when the headgasket went on the 505 diesel and it "Hydroliced" on start up, the forces must have been unbelievable to bend it as we arnt talking about a little bit of metal, more like a T Beam used to hold a building up.

This morning on the way to work, an overcast wet day, poor light, I saw a some lights come round a bend ahead. After a while I realised that there was a car on my side of the road coming towards me at high speed, and I braked sharply. I just missed the car which pulled in to the other side in time. It had two small lights on the front which were alternately flashing. Would this be an unmarked police car? He overtook on double white lines. I'm not happy. The light was poor, it took me a while to realise what was going on, and it was very dangerous.

I intend to report this though I know nothing will come of it. I only have the time and the road, plus a video, but no number plate. Read more

You're welcome. Others here may have more recent experience/info than mine (I retired in 2005) but I don't think (and I hope) that the principles have not changed.

This is a separate thread to the one I wrote about recently.

Why do car Hire companies NOT put the damage on the car on the rental contract before you leave the office. Is it really to hope you won't notice it and get "done" for it afterwards? If the vehicle is being checked in and damage is noticed (and I am sure invoiced) then it must be on their systems surely.... Read more

Takes me back a decade or so, when I picked up a car at Cork airport (may well have been the 4-letter outfit). Spotted a couple of scratches/blemishes and popped back to the desk to point this out - nothing written down - "Yes sir, OK sir, that'll be fine" sort of thing. On return, I don't think they even looked at it.

Point is, we're all so justifiably wary of all these hire companies and their much-publicised sharp practices that it's difficult not to approach the transaction overly cautiously and defensively, with individuals whose casual and tolerant attitude may be entirely genuine. Call me naive, but...

About eight years ago, I bought an aftermarket mechanical breakdown warranty to cover our car and have had it ever since. Over that time it's probably cost me 2 grand in premiums, and I’ve claimed on two occasions, for different cars, a total of about 100 quid after deduction of the excess of £75. I understand the principle of insurance, in that you pay the premiums for peace of mind, hoping meanwhile never to make a claim, so it’s not meant to be an investment. The claims procedure on those two occasions was straightforward, and there was no quibble about the work.

As some on here will know, I bought a Ford B Max back in July; the one with the notorious Powershift gearbox. I’ve since discovered that Ford extended the warranty on the car and the gearbox to five years, so the car is covered for faults till next June. Additionally, the garage where I bought the car has given me 12 months parts and labour warranty up to a limit of 500 quid per claim.... Read more

Just to finish, I'm sure its as plain as the nose on anyone's face that the motive for starting this thread was reassurance that in my own particular circumstances, dropping the aftermarket warranty was the right decision.

Since doing so I've checked reviews on the company and they ain't good, although that comes with the usual proviso where reviews are concerned that "if the experience is good, you're less likely to bother logging into a review site and saying so". ...
