We've been planning on trading in our 11-year-old Ford CMAX for a small 7-seater - only 2 kids but extra seats are needed for visiting family and friends (so not that often), on trips about town and maybe day trips further out of the city. But once someone pointed out the safety implications of having the third row of seats so close to the back of the car and we're wondering whether to reconsider. Are there any 7-seaters which might be safer, and what would the compromises be for us?

We want a smaller 7-seater as we have onstreet, residents parking bays so space can be difficult (and my partner is currently trying to get a driving license). Also we prefer a petrol, in part because of recent diesel controversies but also because we dont' do that many miles (5K or so) and mostly short trips. Looking for 2015 or newer, paying cash approx 15K-18K. Oh and don't like the new CMAX in that as the seats in the second row are not even sized it's hard to fit an adult between two car seats. But our daughter will soon out out of a car seat so this might be less of an issue. Read more

Interesting that you 1st put down the fact that euro ncap crash the cars into a concrete block but then use how your lancruiser coped with hitting a concrete block to determine how strong it is?!.

I'll rephrase, she took out armco/railings which ripped the concrete foundations out, as i said before the design of car was fortunate in this instance, if had been an immovable wall then things would have been different....

That is why I won't have one, but there have been numerous cases of meet and greet car drivers at airports abusing cars and being caught. (i won't use meet and greet either after one at Gatwick did his shopping in my car and forgot it...) Read more

Lesson learned here void this company Hastings and boycott these black box Mickey mouse tuppence saving policies and pay a bit extra . It's a rip off insurance in UK always has been .

Hi All,

I've just purchased a 2013 S-MAX Titanium and was wondering if anyone else has one that doesn't have a child obseration mirror? When on our test drive I was sat in the back whilst my husband drove and I asked the sales guy about the mirror as I use it all the time in my old car and he showed me the sunglasses holder and said it didn't have a mirror as it was an option for one or the other when ordering which I thought was stange. By the time it was my turn in the front it had slipped my mind to check properly.... Read more

Still deliberating what to replace my ix35 with.

The cross country version of this appeals. I don't need 4WD now, but the slightly raised ride height is beneficial. I see its cramped inside but 95% of the time its just me. It looks a comfy thing to spend time in.... Read more

We have a standard V40 1.6 D2 with almost every extra pack. We've replaced twice but each time we tend to replace our other car and have now had this for nearly 5 years which probably tells you how much we love it.

It's not quick but it is supremely comfortable. We've had the mk7 Golf which every review states is the most refined, but my other half in particular is convinced it was noisier and firmer than the V40. I had the new D4 as a courtesy car once, but the engine was far noisier and harsher which I'm not sure I'd choose to live with but it did settle on the motorway....

So a babble of scrappage offers is thrust upon us. The VAG deals look attractive, so I dig further. Yup, strange discount exclusion statements on Volkswagen, dismiss them straight away...Skoda looks more straightforward so, £4000 off a superb...hmm....check HJ buy new cars section, type in Skoda superb as example, DTD comes up at an attractive discount, but wait.....what this?.....small print....

With a few exceptions this was the case with the original goverment scrappage deal. On most makes if you shopped around on the internet sites you could secure a similar or even bigger discount than the scrappage would give you. Obviously these discounts were not available if you did the scrappage. The manufacturers effectively pocketed the goverment incentive at the time. Many manufacturers also put up list prices at the time.

There were a couple of genuine exceptions. Citroen had a cheap run-out model of the Citroen Picasso - that was a real bargin with scrappage on top. In addition the Hyundai i10 was great value with scrappage at the time....

"Navy"? Are these fleet cars?

You have to remove the barnacles from the underside and take off the propeller before road use.

Harriet Harmann is suggesting all drivers over 75 should have to visit a doctor to ascertain their ability to drive. I know lots of drivers well over that age who are perfectly good, fit as fiddles with keen minds and good reactions. My profession needs some of the quickest reactions of any needing to observe multiple things at the same time. As an older driver you must assess your driving all the time and strive to improve all aspects of it. Modern cars have too many dashboard distractions and many drivers spend too much time playing with switches and looking at screens, I now restrict my attention to the road ahead with a very quick look at my speedo to keep to limits. No fan of Harriet Harman here by any means and wouldn't vote for the Labour Party under any condition - except maybe a weekend at the Playboy mansion with unlimited...privileges....anyway....

To be fair what she's said isn't totally stupid. I've always thought it strange that someone at 70 can declare themselves fit to drive and there's plenty of examples when that elderly person has been proven to be unfit to drive but only after they've killed somebody....

The parents have acquired an H plate Fiesta, 5 door 1.1lx with about 40k on the dial. Logbook has Ford Motor Co as the first owner, along with a note saying the car was declared as first used abroad. It was subsequently sold on for private use in the UK, but by what looks to have been a private dealership, rather than a Ford franchise. It appears, to my untrained eye, to be rather standard, in a nice shade of metallic maroon with manual glass sunroof and no obvious oddities. I presume all the RHD examples were built in Dagenham, with the Spanish and German output all LHD? Any thoughts on where it might have started its been or what it might have been up to? Did Ford regularly retain vehicles which were then sold on to the public? Any wisdom received with great interest! Read more
