If you would like a copy of the list let me know where to send it and I will be glad to oblige. As far as the CD collection goes I have not looked at them yet.

Fine, GBP. I'll get in touch via the mods. I haven't bought an LP for many years, but both lists would be of interest.

After just over 36 months from new (and 38000 miles) and just outside the warranty, the thermostat housing has been identified as having a leak. It's now been repaired, at a fair cost because of the amount of labour involved. To me, a non car expert, this seems obviously down to a faulty part and not, given the car's age, to wear and tear. I have never come across a thermostat housing leak after just over three years in any car, it's the type of problem that I would expect to happen after many more years, if it were wear and tear. Can any mechanic give me their view? Is this a faulty that you would not expect to happen so soon, on the face of it, or is this really a wear and tear occurrence that you might expect every few years on a car? How long would you expect the housing to last, on average, before failing due to wear and tear?
Thanks v much. Read more

Probably best to get the new turbo fitted and then flog the Focus.

This is why so many cars bought start giving their new owners so much grief shortly after purchase. Suppose it keeps sites like this busy....

It is interesting how the relationship between car salesman and customer got so adversarial. Due to lack of trust on both sides no doubt. I was lucky and for many years had a really good friend in the trade, from whom a bought lots of cars. My friend was not a mechanic or engineer and he really did not know if the car had faults or not. However the vital factor was that if a problem occured I had complete faith that he would rectify it within the terms of the contract. Quite often we got service above and beyond too. Some car salesmen of recent aquaintance are clearly lacking these skills and attitudes. A real pity. If 'rivernile' ever returns to the forum it will be interesting to read his comments.

Other than the above, the car is in very good shape. A silly comment to make I know, but it is in very good condition for its age....

I would say you've identified the 2 best choices there -- the Yaris or the Auris, which tick the economy and reliability boxes. The Auris, being a slightly bigger, heavier car will be the quieter and most comfortable but the Yaris will probably give you a few more mpg. Both will be far better than your Aygo for comfort/noise. We run a 1.9 tdi, in an Octavia, the best you'll see on that trip is a true 56 to 58 mpg based on my experience. The 1.9s are getting on a bit now, so finding a good one might be a task. We also run an old petrol Corolla and for what it's worth, the build integrity of this is in a different league to anything else I've owned ( including the Octavia)

Just thinking, have you considered an Auris or Prius hybrid?. You will see around 60 mpg plus a very refined and relaxed driving experience if you're not in a rush. And reliability is well proven now. ...
