I've got a 2007 Freelander 2 and a golden retriever! Boot isn't the biggest, but Ted seems happy in there. Gets a good view out too, with decent windows on both sides. Bought ours (TD4) in 2009 with 11,000 miles on it. Now showing 70,000 and aside from an annual service, my only other expense has been a set if tyres. Still on the original discs and pads, though I have to concede that these will need replacing soon and a further set of tyres is on the cards.

I was a bit worried about Land Rovers reliability reputation before we bought, bt it has been no trouble at all. According to the trip computer I'm getting around 39mpg, though I have to concede that I tend to set the cruise control to 60-65 mph and take it easy.

As an earlier post stated, do make sure the boot is big enough though!! We discounted a mark 1 Kuga on account of the small boot.

Cheers

Recently I found a hole in my gearbox. To repair the hold, the mechanic pulled the engine. During that exercise he broke the drive train but that was replaced (this is mainly to show the lack of care he took). When the hole was welded and the engine replaced, the electrician rewired the car. Once that was done, the car would not start although everything was working before the mechanic started working. I had the electrician recheck and test everything and all electronics are working. Since the original mechanic refused to do anymore work on the car, I had another mechanic check it. He says that the lower crankshaft is weak. He suggests that I change from fuel injection to carburation. I fail to understand why the car is not working since it was prior to repairing the gearbox leak. Please advise me as to what happened and what I should do about it. Read more

As you said the car is not worth much so I am unwilling to spend a lot. I just want it to work for a short time until I purchase a new vehicle. Is there anything I can do to get it to work. As I said in my original message, everything was working when the mechanic got it (except of course for the gearbox issue). Everything should be working now but is not. Thus, I think the mechanic did something to break it.

Although they are helpfull, there is a lot more to diagnosing a faulty engine than just looking for fault codes.

It sounds as though your garage isn't very competent....

Hello everyone,

I have a 1997 MK4 Fiesta 1.25 L (DHA engine). The car has bad fuel economy, around 25mpg (US). The car is totally stock regarding the engine and ECU. I do a lot of tuning on aftermarket ECUs like Megasquirt, Motec, Link G4+ etc so I know a thing or two. I thought that the engine is not getting into fuel cut because the transition from open to closed throttle is really smooth and the car is not losing a lot of speed.... Read more

IF running costs are your main issue then the Focus, but else the Volvo will be smother and more relaxed driving for every day use. The new super fast spining turbo's are a worrie to me and personally I would wait and see how they work out in practice.

I'm looking at buying an 08 plate Ford galaxy 1.8 diesel that has a couple of issues. The car idles ok but when pressing the accelerator between 1000 and 2000rpm it goes very slowly then seems ok. Also there is a lot of white smoke and a rattle from the engine until 2000 rpm. He has had the turbo and injectors changed but still has the same issue. Anyone had the same experience with one of these motors? Read more

Agree with the above, Diesels are no longer simple affairs, usually eye wateringly expensive to fix issues when you know a vehicle's history and likely problem, i wouldn't entertain buying a poorly one in except at scrap value.
