This weekend the Tour de France starts in Yorkshire. First stage Saturday, second on Sunday.

With usual failure to think through the consequences, local authority has declared that no parking will be allowed on any road within 100 yards or so of the route, from 7 pm Friday till 7.30 pm Sunday.... Read more

My speedo has failed e.g registers 50mph on starting even though stationary. On the move it spins round the dial or sticks at one point.

Does anyone know if this can be fixed rather than an expensive repair please? Thanks. Read more

No, not fixed yet, sorry.

Why and when do you change your car? We can' take up our minds as to wether or not downsize to a new Fiesta or Up from the 2003 Volvo V70. It's running fine with 172k on the clock and not worth much as a trade in I imagine. Keep the Volvo or change to one of Fiesta or Up? Read more

Hiya
I've got a question about an issue I have.

On Saturday just gone I put a deposit down on 10 plate 1.3cdti corsa at a local car dealer. It was due to be serviced and valeted before picking up today. However on my way to picking it up today the dealer called me saying that during the service, which is done on site, the mechanic has snapped a glow plug when trying to remove it so it wouldn't be ready.

I called back this evening to get an update and I was told that it had been sent a specialist in this matter as the mechanic was unable to remove it. They said they hoped that the specialist could remove it otherwise it's a remove the cylinder head job.

I guess my main question is could any damage be done by trying to remove the snapped glow plug or could any loose dirt/debris fall into the combustion chamber during the progress. I get a 3 month warranty with the vehicle but I'm worried that damage could be done that will rear its head a few months down the line.

Also would I be within any rights to say I no longer want the car and get my deposit back, especially if the specialist can't remove it without taking the head off and all that's involved, as the car isn't in the state it was when I reserved it?

Thanks for any advice. Read more

On the positive side, you are getting the glow plugs replaced. If you'd had this car 2 years and then snapped a glow plug yourself you'd be looking at a big bill.

I don't know this engine, but glow and spark plugs can often be removed without further damage and without requiring the head off....

Can anyone please advise me the best and safest way to sell a car for scrap?

I have seen lots of adverts in my local paper saying they will come round and pay between £500 and £1000 to take a car away for scrap but I am unsure who to choose and who I can trust to do this lawfully and still make some money.... Read more

I used CarTakeBack.com

They give online quotes from scappies in your area, you pick the one you want and (in my case) the truck turned up at agreed time - paid cash, issued receipt, and Cert of Destruction followed next day by email....

We'll be back in the UK as a family from August until Feb 2015, and have £3-4k to spend on a used car that we'll want to sell again in February when we head back overseas. We'll do mostly city driving with a few motorway trips, and need something that can take 3 child seats across the back (don't mind if it's a bit squeezed).

What would you recommend that won't lose too much over 6-7 months in depreciation, or cost too much to run? Thanks in advance for your advice! Read more

I agree with mss1tw. Some rental companies will do decent long term deals (30 days +). The beauty is no reliability hassles, not worrying about selling the car before you leave and no other costs apart from fuel.

Worthwhile emailing companies near to where you will be living or arriving/departing....

Rather than guess get it into A Bosch service centre. They will diagnose the problem in minutes.

What if the unscrupulous crook has already applied for the duplicate log book and gives this to the logbook loan company? The car can be sold within minutes of the loan taken place leaving the unsuspecting buyer high and dry. Buying from a private seller has always been risky, this takes it to a new level. Read more

Surely the phrase "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP" will surpass any rights of the loan company. You can have a vehicle registered in your name but not be the legal owner. I would of thought that was a big problem for these loan sharks, I mean companies...
