I've just been given a Ford Fiesta by my Auntie who has stored it for two years. (It's done 350 miles since 2008) Obviously the radio needs the code typed in now and I haven't got it. The radio is a FD6000 serial number M003805. I was wondering if anyone can help. I'm demented sitting in silience when I drive! Read more

Thanks that's brilliant. I got asked to travel from Newcastle to Manachester for a meeting only to be told the company was closing and I was being made redundant. When I got back to Newcastle the car broke down and it was the fuel injection pump had seized and the camshaft broke so the car was scrap. (Rover 45 diesel( So by 5pm I was out of a job and no car. Luckily my Auntie gave me hers and the only thing wrong was the radio code. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!...

I was just wondering if the the Honest John website owners / administrators could make a definitive list of the real world mpg submissions by owners.

Reading skidpan's post about odo accuracy it just occurred to me I could easily do the same using my hiking GPS, and add a correction factor to my mileage spreadsheets.

Then I remembered tyre wear....

I purchased a V-reg VW Golf Gti 1.8T exactly 3 years ago for £2000.

Since purchase I've done:
28,000 miles
And spent:
£5260 on fuel
£2285 on Servicing (MOT, Service, Cambelt, Wipers, Repairs, Tyres x4,
£1481 on Expenses (Insurance &VED).

Just passed its MOT, with advisories:
56% Rolling Brake Efficiency nearly at fail limit
Wishbone bushes deteriorating
Front suspension movement at top

And as of a couple of days ago it crunches into second gear, other than that and the MOT its in very good shape mechanically and body wise.

All in its cost me 33p/mile Read more

Well, no matter what you'd bought, the servicing /tyres costs, and the insurance/VED costs would have been roughly the same. The only way in which you would have saved money is with fuel - if you'd gone diesel. But then, the car would have been more expensive (probably), so any savings would have been lessened by that.

Unfortunately though, you're now at the point where you'll need to start looking at what it needs spending on it to keep it running, compared to sinking that money into something else. Do you run it for a year and then sell it with running out MOT, or get shot now with 12 months MOT.

Thought I'd share my problem in order to help others as this was driving me mad.

When cold starting in morning or whenever the engine would turn over and fire up immediately. It would then just conk out and not catch if you know what I mean. If you start it on the gas peddle and give it some revs for a moment or two it would then idle correctly.... Read more

I am thinking of changing my indicators over to led, can i fit a generic constant flash relay in place of the oem, or do i have to go down the resistor route? sPlus if i have to use resistors, do i have to put them on all the led indicator bulbs, or just on one set (i.e. left and right)? Read more

If is more light output you're after i would try one bulb first and see how good, or unbelievably poor the things are first.

Reversing light lenses/reflectors on my old Benz arn't great so the light output isn't exactly wonderful, 2 x standard 21w bulbs..so i bought a couple of LED bulbs hoping for better, disppointing is an understatement, they now reside in disgrace in my garage, about the only thing they'd be any use for would be as hand held lead lights via a couple of crocodile clips to connect straight to battery, no danger of blinding meself..;)

According to the manufacturer of my car my engine produces the highest torque figure between 1,600 and 1,800 PRM which equates to around 70 MPH in 7th gear (automatic).

I generally drive between 60 and 70 on the motorway so the car tends to sit in the rev range where the torque output is in the 'sweet spot'.... Read more

And the fuel consumption doesn't vary whether I drive at 70mph or 90mph, as found in practice over c. 140,000 miles in the same car.

It will vary - you can't have the same MPG at 70mph as you do 90mph...
