Just got my renewal. Acceptable, comparison stes couldn't do better, but one point. I HAVE to tell them if i change my job!

What has that got to do with it if the job is the same type? Read more

I have the title 'doctor' and used to be a consultant, but not medical, a radiological safety one. Insurance didn't have a category for that type of consultant...bit confusing! Choosing a health and safety occupation sadly doesn't lower one's insurance premium. Putting in 'teacher' is better!

My van was stolen, and recovered. do I have to accept it back as I'm worried it might have sustained some damage to the engine. Read more

I doubt that mere worry is enough to refuse it back - you'd need to find evidence of abuse.

while making a three point turn I noticed a whine from the steering. With the car parked and only a slight turn of the wheel left or right the whine was there. I checked the power steering fluid level and it was ok.Do I have big trouble,is it safe to drive? Read more

I can't speak for your particular make but I had the same problem recently on my 307.

There was a service bulletin posted by Peugeot that said you had to overfill the power steering reservoir to above maximum - but not so it spills out....

Hi, I bought a used car in September(very low mileage). This car broke down under the dealer's 3 month warranty & steering wheel needed replacing. Dealer has replaced with very old, shabby replacement with which I am not happy. He has agreed to replace with a better second hand wheel and has said he cannot cover the cost of a brand new wheel. He advises the second hand wheel may take quite some time for him to find. Am I within my rights legally to expect a brand new wheel or am I only entitled to a second hand wheel? Many thanks.... is it right that the car should rev so high at 70mph 4000rpm Read more

Happy Blue!

Hmmm 4000rpm at 70mph is only about 17mph per 1,000rpm so way below what I think any reasonable petrol automatic should be doing. Should be more like 25mph per 1,000rpm and therefore below 3,000rpm at 70mph.

Sounds like the O/D button has been pressed. Make sure there are no unusual lights on the dashboard, including those that say 'OD off' or 'overdrive off'.

This is a paraphrase of an article that appeared in a recent edition of the New Scientist magazine. I hope that they don't mind my repeating it, but the subject is rather pressing. It's going to raise hackles among more that BR members, especially the last paragraph.

Oh - who says so?

Practically every respectable opinion poll on the subject. Apparently the British public are the most sceptical about the green agenda in the entire EU....

Hi all

I grabbed a citroen xantia earlier this year ( CITROEN XANTIA TD SX AUTO ) not really knowing how good the ride was in these. I went a bit mad in the garden this summer and i think i put too much weight in the back, ever since then the back has become stiffer and stiffer.

I recently replaced the two rear spheres myself (fronts not that old) although not the one in the middle and the ride was stupendous as when i first bought it although lasted only a day.

The next day i went to pop something in the boot (engine off) and the back dropped a few inches, ever since then when putting the lever in the middle mode the back goes to its highest position. Fluid replaced, filters cleaned, depressurises, pressurises ok no dodgy ticks.

placing lever in low mode takes the whole car to the floor ok, placing in high, takes the whole car to high position, when i try to place in normal from either low or high position the back will sit high.

I am sure these cars are getting on a bit now but i love the ride and it only has 50k on the clock, I am no mechanic and can't afford a garage but am willing to have a bash so would like to keep it. Do i need to replace the central rear sphere or would it be part of the height adjustment thats failed.

I have had a look at the rear linkage and can't see anything linking to the rear anti roll bar, could it be this is missing? A picture or diagram of this area would be great if someone could point me in the right direction as i don't really know what I am looking at.

Spanner and willingness in hand, dreaming of a smooth ride, cheers. Read more

Back to smooth ride and no dodgy looking jacked up rear!

I did actually have the back on axle stands but still didn't feel safe to me, ended up getting some ramps to be sure as well as being able to get underneath and see the whole mechanism at full low / high....
