Can anyone recomend a good garage for my Honda Accord 2.2 cdti 2005 model.

Its due a full service and bought this car in the last 6 months. All previous serfvices was done by Honda itself, but the cost seems a bit steep. Any alternatives?

I live in birmingham and willing to drive uptoi 20 miles for a good garage.

2nd question, may need to top up my oil before service. Not sure which one I should use.

Been googling and got the following:

Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w30

Castrol Edge 0w30

Some say go for 0w30, but others saying 5w30 will be fine as long as its fully sythentic.

Any help will be much appreciated for both questions.

Seems it depends on whether or not it's got a DPF: www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles

All the main oil suppliers will have their own websites.

Why are you topping up the oil just before a service? The oil you put in will be taken out and thrown away.

Or have you let it fall dangerously low/

Reason for the top up is because its sitting on the minumum. I travel 115 miles a day so didnt want to risk anything, oil indicator has not come up but not taking risks.

You need to look in the owners manual - as well as viscosity, eg 5W-30, it's even more important to use the correct ACEA category, eg ACEA-C3 as using the wrong ACEA grade is likely to wreck any DPF and/or Catalytic Converter fitted.

If you sort out the correct ACEA category, then synthetic, part-synthetic or mineral becomes irrelevant - but even fully synthetic of the wrong ACEA category will wreck things.

0w-30 Castrol Edge is fine.
Don't use 5w-30, a lot if garages use it because it's more common than 0w-30.
The iCtdi is quite fussy about its oil.

Castrol Edge FST 0W-30 meets both ACEA-C2 and ACEA-C3 so good for many cars.

Garages use 5w-30 because it's a lot cheaper than 0w-30.
Most people don't check what oil is being put in their cars.

My understanding is that low oil level in the 2.2 cdti can cause premature wear and lead to breakage of the timing chain. I would definately keep it topped up all the time.

Brave man OP, i couldn't drive a vehicle with the oil level showing minimum further than the next place oil is sold, let alone consider a 100 mile drive.

Can't agree with you gb. As long as the level's above min and below max it's right.

But as my current car only holds 2.7L, I tend to fill to max at oil changes - it doesn't go down.

On the pre facelifts the oil pump chain is the weakness.
Generally it's lack of oil changed and wrong oil being used that causes the breakage. That said you can do everything right and they still break.
Just for info the iCtdi holds about 5.5 litres of oil, but can use upto a litre every 600 miles.
