Hi, just wondered if anyone has come across anything remotely like this or has any advice at all. I am going to call Trading Standards (well, the Citizens Advice bit that you have to call first, anyway) on Monday as in their infinite wisdom they are not open at weekends when people can easily contact them...) but in the meantime thought online might be worth a shot.
I live in the UK and bought a car from an independant used car dealership a week ago, and as soon as I got it home noticed a coolant leak. Took it back the next day, and it has been in the garage since. I asked for a refund but they said they needed to wait for the report from the garage first before they knew if that would be possible. They eventually sent it to a VW specialist who has diagnosed the head gasket needs to be replaced. The garage said they will replace it and also replace the cambelt and I will have the car back in about 6 more days. I said that as it's a serious problem and the car was not fit for purpose when I bought it, I am no longer I interested, and just want a full refund.
The garage responded that ordinarily they would be fine to do this, but they literally don't have the money. They said they bought two high value cars based on a promised interest, but the deal fell through. I asked when they would have the money then, and they said they don't know. They are going to call me on Monday. Throughout the conversation they were pushing me to accept the repaired car.
I am at a complete loss as I was never expecting them to say they WOULD give the refund IF THEY COULD. I don't believe for a second that they don't have the money but don't know what to do! I am worried that if I aggressively continue to demand a refund, they will just still refuse, and may not even repair the car properly or replace the cambelt as a result (that was an optional extra replacement on top of the head gasket that they were going to 'throw in').
I guess the main problem is that I haven't yet been able to speak to Trading Standards, and there is NOTHING online which spells out CLEARLY what your rights ACTUALLY are. Everything says something along the lines of you are 'entitled' to a 'refund, repair or replacement'. Well does that mean that they can just do the repair, and don't have to give me a refund, even if I insist?
No one I've spoken to has ever come across a garage trying to pull something like this. The best advice I've been given so far is to give them until Thursday to get the money together, then if they don't, take it further. Small claims court? Legal action? Will that work, how much will that likely cost, will my legal costs be paid for me if I win?!
I have called the non-emergency police number for advice, but that basically amounted to 'speak to Trading Standards'.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

Have a W reg ford puma 1.7, needs a new exhaust as cat is on way out. Has done 127k miles - still drives nicely apart from an occasionally holding back due to the cat. Anyway MOT and Tax both expire end of month, have been quoted £450 for a new exhaust to be fitted, is it worth getting fixed or should I sell or scrap?? Not sure how much I would get in this condition Read more
Puma is destined to become a classic. A friend like hers so much that she has just had both front wings replaced. That cost more than my Merc for the same work. She has also had the rear wheel arches done. A little crazy, maybe. There is alot of sentimental value in that car because it belonged to her now deceased daughter.
That is understandable....
When viewing threads on this forum I find that it seems to bunch posts that are replies to posts, Can I do something so the threads are shown on order of most recent ones lasts, Like most other forums do? Read more
I think the software is trying - maybe not succeeding! - to be helpful in showing when someone replies to a partlcular post rather than the thread in general.
If you click on 'view threaded' this may give you what you're looking for.
Car was running rough, struggling to start and had several codes pointing to injector problems..
Ran a leak-off test, 1 and 3 were pi**ing out diesel. Just changed both injectors, engine started, then coded injectors and engine hasn't started since? good fuel pressure on cranking, new battery just wont fire. on easy start just starts then cuts out a second later.. Please help!! Read more
Remember when you recode them that the injector numbers and the firing order do not corrispond ! And the firing order on a Ford is different !
So for example if it asks you to code cylinder 3 it will be injector number 4!
Hi guys!My wife was doing 30 miles/h in FORD focus 1.8 diesel(51 plate) when suddenly the oil and battery light came up,the car slowed down losing power. The steering became impossible to control so she pulled over and called RAC.The guy tried to jump start it but didn`t work, mentioning that not the battery is the problem.I had a look on the comments on internet and realized that could be so many different issues:cam belt, glow plugs or glow plug relay, fuel pump etc. Also I want to mention that when try to start it it does a clickin` noise(short),but is not the common starter motor noise...Thanx. With the issue over the starting It could well be the cambelt. When was it last changed?
I'm at my wits end, it all started with dmf going got this replaced with starter etc and ever since egm light been on start up fine for last month then One morning car drove fine down to shop then dead battery 5 mins later on start up, got jump start battery reading 8v, wouldn't start after that long enough with jump start so had to get it towed, Mechanic advised New battery but replaced with lead alkaline, I have read it needs to be silver calcium due to smart charge and I believe this is part of issue as 24 hours later car won't start again but when new battery was installed it read at 14v but I read this voltage would indicate smart charge faulty somewhere as should read around 16v? Alternator was tested and apparently fine and was wondering if egm light is linked to all of this and possible smart charge faulty loom, was thinking even when the engine was out for dmf replacement has the smart charg. Hi
I have a x type 2.0d 2007 and i am having problems with the car on startup. When i start the car it is very lumpy like it was n't firing on all cylinders or something like, also it kicks out a good cloud of smoke (white/blue) . It soon settles down after 1 or 2 mins and then runs fine when warm. I have had all glow plugs replaced recently, EGR is blanked off and i have had a friend use diagnostics on it (snapon diagnostics) with no fault codes. If the car is kept over night in my workplace garage (warmish) it doesn't smoke as bad or is as lumpy but there is still smothing there. If i take off oil filler (when not running) when its been running for a while there is what you could say is smoke coming out and also from dip stick. its really annoying me now and would love to get to the bottom of this, any help would be brilliant!!!
Thanks for your help

Hi Carl, just before you go spend any money, I've had some interesting faults on these later ford systems! Could you let us know if any work has been done on the vehicle just before the fault started or did you buy it like that?
Regards Kev
Hi All, my daughter had the cam belt done recently and the radio code in her manual isn't working. Can only assume it's been changed and the manual not updated. Its an EON 4500 radio.

It is not possible to change the code.Either you are not entering the code correctly or the radio is faulty.hth
