Citroen Xantia - Citroen Xantia Suspension Stuck in high - Dav3y

Hi all

I grabbed a citroen xantia earlier this year ( CITROEN XANTIA TD SX AUTO ) not really knowing how good the ride was in these. I went a bit mad in the garden this summer and i think i put too much weight in the back, ever since then the back has become stiffer and stiffer.

I recently replaced the two rear spheres myself (fronts not that old) although not the one in the middle and the ride was stupendous as when i first bought it although lasted only a day.

The next day i went to pop something in the boot (engine off) and the back dropped a few inches, ever since then when putting the lever in the middle mode the back goes to its highest position. Fluid replaced, filters cleaned, depressurises, pressurises ok no dodgy ticks.

placing lever in low mode takes the whole car to the floor ok, placing in high, takes the whole car to high position, when i try to place in normal from either low or high position the back will sit high.

I am sure these cars are getting on a bit now but i love the ride and it only has 50k on the clock, I am no mechanic and can't afford a garage but am willing to have a bash so would like to keep it. Do i need to replace the central rear sphere or would it be part of the height adjustment thats failed.

I have had a look at the rear linkage and can't see anything linking to the rear anti roll bar, could it be this is missing? A picture or diagram of this area would be great if someone could point me in the right direction as i don't really know what I am looking at.

Spanner and willingness in hand, dreaming of a smooth ride, cheers.

If its hydractive the centre spheres ar primaraly responsible for the soft ride, under steady, level driving conditions the electrovalve opens and allows the fluid to flow between the spheres and into the centre one which makes it very soft. You should be able to bounce the rear suspension about 6" if all the spheres are good. The only other likely problems could be failure of the electro valves/Ecu or siezure of the radius arm bearings.

Make sure it is hydractive as the centre sphere could be anti sink. I think it should have a 'sport mode' switch if it is.

ok thanks yes it is hydractive, i just realised i didn't bleed the blakes afterwards, i think ill give that a go as well as height adjustment clean then have a good read on the electrowave, cheers

Forgot about the suspension height, problems there are usually due to a sticking height control valve, a good drenching of the linkage in WD40 over two or three days will usually unstick it, or it could be that the plastic link has come off. Otherwise you can adjust the height by moving the clamp round the anti roll bar but unless its been disturbed that's unlikely to be the problem.

Yes indeed the plastic clip has popped off. Have ordered a bag o bones from local citroen dealer at £2.19 a pop

will pop one one then maybe use another when i get round to taking the whole unit off and giving a good clean. giving me a couple of spares. I am amazed this was so exposed, may have to design some open ended plastic cover to protect from the worst of the muck.

I'm probably teaching Granny to suck eggs, but always use axle stands while under the car, especially a Citroen with hydraulic suspension. They can totally collapse their suspension in seconds if you alter the height corrector or loosen a hydraulic pipe.

Back to smooth ride and no dodgy looking jacked up rear!

I did actually have the back on axle stands but still didn't feel safe to me, ended up getting some ramps to be sure as well as being able to get underneath and see the whole mechanism at full low / high.

Bag O Bones ordered at £2.19 each from local Citroen garage and had a bash on Friday. My problem was the bone had popped but the actual ball joint that connects to the height adjuster had come out of it's socket and was dangling on the the end of the dog bone. A clear example i imagine of how a seized / seizing adjuster can affect this mechanism.

I replaced the dog bone anyway and gave the whole unit a clean n grease while placing the ball joint back in with a little extra ( still a good fit but had certainly had a good tug ) to keep it held. Maybe next year i will taken the whole unit off / strip and clean and look for a more permanent solution to keep the ball joint in, possible a spot of weld?

I think the worst par of this job was actually placing the spring clip that holds the dog bone back on, it completely had me for a while, got there in the end though. I think i read some people were having difficulty finding something to hold these on. Mine looked like a triangle ended clip ( triangle end hooks on to end of dog bone ) one end and a hooked holder at the end (two u shaped clips that clip over the end of the clamp arm and latch on when released ).
