After driving for about a mile the yellow car/spanner indicator light came on but the vehicle ran OK with no apparent problem. This went on for about a month, start the car OK, after a mile the light would come on again. Took it to my local non-Vauxhall garage to see if the could read the ECU error codes and point me in the right direction to where the fault might lie but they could only read the general codes.... My astravan has for the past few months become progressively more difficult to start, I knew that the glow plugs had done over 100k so decided to change them. This did not resolve the problem.
I also recently had the timing belt done which appeared to have made the problem even more pronounced (could this be a timing issue?) no engine management lights were coming on so I took it to a garage for a diagnostic check. The guy said everything was clear but he said after an inspection that it was 3 possible faults.... Read more
Although you've changed the glow plugs, have you checked that they are getting any voltage. Check the voltage with a meter immediately after turning the ignition to the glow position. They only stay energised for a few seconds.
Also worth checking the valve clearances. If they are tight it will be loosing compression so not getting enough heat into the cylinders.
Hi. Have just bought the above fitted with, continental sport contact 2 tyres. The car has only done, 6.5k, but the tyres are extremely noisy, spoiling what is an excellent motor. The tyre pressures are right, and i can tell an immediate difference when driving on smooth tarmac. Is this normal for these tyres, or is it normal for this car if they were fitted with an alternative?
Many thanks. Read more
There is a known problem on Octaviias - especially estates - with camber not always being set correctly at the factory and this causes the sawtoothing. If the car is under warranty the dealer will check and adjust the camber for free - although you may be charged for the check if it is within spec.
The dealer will not pay for the new set of rear tyres which you'll need before the check is carried out. It's not possible to get an accurate measurement with tyres that have already been damaged in this way....
Does anyone have experience of swapping a manual gearbox with an auto box on a W124?
I love W124's and am considering buying an Indian import, but do not like manual boxes. The car would see me to the end of my days, so re-sale is not a problem. I had a 1994 W124 1994, in 2000 and replaced it with an E Class V6 240 estate in 2007 and regretted it from Day One. Luckily, I gave the W124 to my son who had it for 3 years. ... Read more
Thank you all for your input - I'll look at the W124.co.uk website and have and see what's available.
I purchased an Audi A3 TDI 2006 (BKD engine) around 4 months ago and it developed a fault whereby if the fuel level was below half a tank it would not start. This only happens when the car has been left overnight. It cranks fine but it seems it’s not getting any fuel. It can be started with easy start or when the fuel level is raised again to above half a tank.... Read more
I should think the tandem pump will be the cause of the oil contamination in the fuel, I've replaced many of these plus the in-tank pump and filters for the same dirty fuel problems but I'm bothered by the non start with half tank fuel level ?
Every car I've repaired always starts (after bleeding the system of course) without problems and there is only 2 gallons of fuel in the tank after it's been drained and flushed. There must be air being drawn into the system when the level is low(ish) which to me, indicates a problem with fuel leaking back and air being induced. There may be a secondary pick up in the tank linked to the main unit and there maybe a split or hole in the link pipe, but it sounds very much like the tandem pump is leaking (hence the oil contamination) and the fuel return outlet in the tank is exposed when the level is low. When the fuel level is higher it effectively "seals" the system and won't allow air to be induced.

Hi,
My car has failed its MOT on emissions
& to quote the salesman/owner "It needs a new engine"
That seems a bit vague to me...
These are the readings
FAST IDLE
CO_______ 0.75______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.30)
HC_______ 158______pass
Lambda ___1.030_____FAIL (MOT limit 1.030..just on limit)
SECOND FAST IDLE
CO_______ 0.78______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.30)
HC_______ 122______pass
Lambda ___1.030_____FAIL (MOT limit 1.030..just on limit)
NATURAL IDLE
CO_______ 0.89______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.50)
What do you reckon?
I wouldn't mind having a tinker....but I can get another for £500 with 12 mths MOT
and scrap this one for £120
ps I have notcied recently that there is a small puff of blue smoke after idling at traffic lights...don't know if that is relevant ?
Thanks

Does anyone know how the DPF on this model regenerates itself? Does it trigger by mileage covered from the last regenaration, by differential pressure sensors in the exhust system or by some other means. Where is the DPF located in this model? Read more
My 118D had exactly the same system described by craig-pd130. In over 5 years of ownership and 37,000 it just got on with life. You could spot when a re-gen was happening once you got used to the car, the engine note between gearchanges was different.
