I posted earlier this year regards black smoke on acceleration. Initially, EGR blanking plate cured the fault but it is now back. Checked the blanking plate and it is OK.
Black smoke with lack of power......Have found the air filter is blocked (although only changed 4 months ago. Have replaced with new and also done a fuel filter change for good measure. This seems to be the original one from new which was meant to get changed during a service 4 months ago!... Read more

Sorted a brand new starter motor did trick, the old one was burnt out all the brushes and the contacts were well not good.
In "Ask HJ" he makes the statement that;
"I never recommend budget tyres because I can't trust them,..."
When does a tyre cease to be, or become a budget tyre?
Are the standards set for tyre manufacture so low as to be useless?
Since having a nightmare with Dunlop SP's on one car, and seen the price of other "Premium" brands, I usually go with Hankook or Kumho and have yet to aquaplane or kill small children owing to extended breaking distances. Read more
Budget tyres today offer more grip than premium tyres did 15 years ago, yes premium tyres are better but there's nothing wrong with budget tyres. 99% of accidents are caused by driver error not lack of grip.
Of course there are compromise brands like Kumho who sell premium quality tyres at mid-range prices. I generally buy cheaper tyres and change them before they hit 3mm of wear, a budget tyre with 3mms of tread will offer more aquaplane resistance than a premium one with 2mms. ...
Hi,
the cambelt is due on my Honda FRV, 1st change since new. I have spoken to dealership re this and they would just change the belt not the whole kit and water pump, which is obviously cheaper than changing the whole kit and pump. Speaking to my local garage they have advised against this even though Honda say it's only the belt that needs replacing on the 1st change, my local garage disagrees and would change kit plus water pump at a higher cost.... If the belt and tensioner are thought to be fine, why bother changing the belt?
Which is the best out of these two ?
Both are the next to top spec, roughly equivalent power output, plenty of goodies etc.... Read more

I Have a persisitent intermittent 'gurgling' noise coming from the engine behind the steering wheel area. It sounds like a glass bottle being filled with water and when full it then 're-fills' so to speak, straight away or some minutes later. Vauxhall advised that it was due to an air lock in the coolant but bleeding didn't stop it. Then they said that it was air bubbles in the Fuel system and a replacement Fuel Filter was required, This was done but the noise continues! I've NOW been told that it's an inherent fault in, not only Zafiras, but also Astras! They also said that a fix had been developed for the Astra but not the Zafira! Does anyone have a similar noise or know anything about it<

I have recently purchased a new Golf Mark 7 in Reflex Metallic Silver. The car now has 200 miles on the odometer.
I have recently discovered a paint blemish on the rear bumper under the near side back light cluster. I took the car back to the VW dealers and they confirmed it was a warranty issue. I questioned whether the re-sprayed panel would match the rest of the car and they advised me to talk to their designated body repairers.
This I have done and they confirm the blemish and that it was not caused by accident damage and asubsequent re-spray. The problem is the original paint. The said silver was the worst colour to match and advised me that the end result might leave me with a finish worse than it is now. They told me of a customer (VW) last year who had a similar problem and even after 6 re-sprays of the offending panel they never managed to match the colour. What may match from one angle will be different from another angle.
What do you suggest I do? VW Customer Care Passenger Cars have just advised me to get the bumper re-sprayed and hope for the best ! Not very encouraging.
Can I ask, at the very least, for a refund of the £500 extra I paid for this paint finish?
Thanks for any advice Read more

My car has just had its 45k service although it has only done 30k. It is just over 3 yrs old and just out of warranty.
The mechanic noticed a noisy diff and diagnosed a faulty pinion which will need replacing. I am told it is not dangerous at present. At my behest, the garage (a main dealer) asked LR for a contribution and they have agreed to offer one third goodwill contribution.... Read more

Hi, My car starts first time every time but for the first couple of minutes it struggles. I found if i stay put and push the throttle a couple of times the rev counter settles back to idle speed and then the car drives fine. Any ideas? Is this something to do with the automatic choke perhaps? Suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers Read more
Is the engine filled with the correct grade oil?
