Ref my car, it’s a Golf 2.0 GT TDI (140) on a 2004 plate – it’s a mk5 version.

The problem, it starts absolutely fine cold, first time. When the engines warm, it doesn’t start very easily, in fact it turns over for a few seconds before it eventually starts, almost like it’s stalled or the batteries flat.... Read more

The 1.4 TSI seems a good engine to replac my 1.9 PD TDI at somepoint in the future, shame that if you want an automatic which I do want next time it comes with DSG box.

R reg without remote keys.

I don't have the books for this car I have inherited.

Used the second key which I now suspect had not been sync'd and the car won't start. All the lights are on but nothing else. I had this problem before on my old mondeo so I know there is a sequence but without the book I'm stuck. Anyone have the book or ideas on how to unlock it. I have a week before its going to be towed away police say.

Thanks in advance for your excellent help!!! Read more

If you use an unprogrammed key to start the car,the system will lock out for around 5 mins.Try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins and re-try with the original first key.

I drive a 2005 1.2 16v Renault Clio Extreme 4. I've just discovered (after owning it for 6 years) that I have a trip computer, and I get 505 miles according to that from a full tank. This equates to £57 of petrol. It is also currently showing 45.1mpg.

Is this good for a car of its size?

I'll be buying a new car in the next few months, not sure what yet, but what I'd like to know is whether or not this is a good amount of estimated mileage for a car that size.

For a 1.6 or 2.0 diesel, what kind of mileage will I be looking at from a full tank? Obviously it's hard to specify without me giving you a make and model (sorry) but I'm mainly trying to work out how much my fuel bill will go up.

Thanks! Read more

My wife's 2000 Clio 1.4 would get about 50mpg on long journeys, so your figure of 45 is quite reasonable for a 1.2.

A car's trip computer can be fairly accurate, but your own calculation is the only way to be certain, as the car can only guesstimate how many litres you put in. I believe it calculates by metering the fuel through the injectors.

Hmm. So a kamikaze pigeon apparently decided to shuffle off its mortal coil by throwing itself directly into the car's headlamp. Surprisingly, the lights still work although still surrounded by feathers! It is, of course, far too much to hope that I could just buy a new lense (as I was able to do on the old Cavalier - £5 from main dealers and a 5 minute job to replace) so it looks like a whole new headlamp assembly will be needed at a cost of £ouch.

Replacing the bulbs in this car is a nightmare - I know that the unit can be moved forward by removing two retaining bolts at the top but there's another contact point somewhere underneath which I've never needed to tackle. Has anyone successfully removed a whole headlamp assembly before and, if so, is it possible to do so without disassembling the whole of the front of the car?... Read more

Thanks Chris. I've actually just ordered a workshop manual on DVD.

Three screws hold the assembly in position - two on top and one easily accessed from underneath. Unfortunately, there's insufficient space to jiggle the assembly out so it is indeed a case of dropping the side of the bumper. What continually frustrates me about this car is that it seems to be a backwards step in design. ...

I noticed a hissing sound when the air-con was switched on this morning upon checked the car I found a pool of air-con fluid underneath the condenser.

I don't have the money to repair it at present and wondered if Ieaving the repair will cause any deterioration in the system. To be honest, I don't really use the air-con, so wont miss it. But if I do choose to sell the car, I would prefer to have everything functioning for the new owner. Read more
