Peugeot 106 1.1 petrol 1998 - MOT fail CO 0.8 Lambda at high limit - liammcl

Hi,
My car has failed its MOT on emissions
& to quote the salesman/owner "It needs a new engine"
That seems a bit vague to me...

These are the readings

FAST IDLE
CO_______ 0.75______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.30)
HC_______ 158______pass
Lambda ___1.030_____FAIL (MOT limit 1.030..just on limit)

SECOND FAST IDLE
CO_______ 0.78______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.30)
HC_______ 122______pass
Lambda ___1.030_____FAIL (MOT limit 1.030..just on limit)

NATURAL IDLE
CO_______ 0.89______FAIL (MOT Limit 0.50)

What do you reckon?
I wouldn't mind having a tinker....but I can get another for £500 with 12 mths MOT
and scrap this one for £120

ps I have notcied recently that there is a small puff of blue smoke after idling at traffic lights...don't know if that is relevant ?

Thanks
Liam

If you're getting a puff of blue when pulling away (when the engine is moving tobeing under load) then I'd say this sounds like worn rings and/or bores. I'd suggest carrying out a compression test before you do anything else. Burning oil poisons the cat so this problem needs to be rectified first.

Many thanks Cyd{P}

I don't know if it's relevant to the blue smoke...
but I haven't changed the oil, or filter since I've had the car.... I don't know if the p[revious owner had either.

The blue smoke seemed to start (It is only a small puff)
when I bought 5liters of 10w semi synthetic for £10, from a very cheap shop .

Anywho, thinking about it... the clutch is a bit iffy too, and the brakes need doing
..so maybe it is time to let it go to the light :)

It would be interesting to see how people diagnose these problems, without swapping bits and costing a fortune, for retests..

I'll have a look at how much a compression tester is ...thanks

Cheers
Liam
ps funnily enough, they didn't fail the air bag ECU light not coming on,
nor this mod with an eleastic band... the wipers dont work without it

It would be interesting to see how people diagnose these problems, without swapping bits and costing a fortune, for retests..

I have a severely aged cat and natural idle CO emissions are a bit of a struggle, but everything else is well wthin limits.

The combination of high HC, CO combined within a lean lambda reading would point to excessive oil consumption from either worn rings or valve seals.

But, it would be worth checking the exhaust system for leaks upstream of the cat before condemning the car. If the exhaust is taking in air (counter intuitive though it may sound), it can threw out all the emissions readings whilst the engine itself is fine.

Thanks Unthrottled,
I have just this second invested in one of these...

I would like to have a co, lambda sensor... but they are too much for me !
Just out of interst, the local garage's gas emission tester uses Windows XP.
The leads feed into it... I'll have a look at the com ports next time I'm there...

Some other ideas of co, o2...just for interest

just a quick update...
I got this one today

so the other one, can be kept for a bit,
for tinkering and parts...
Thanks everyone

Another update...
I did a compression test tonight... all cylinders 150 psi !

btw, one spark plug seemed a bit gunky .. a tiny drop of oil round the electrode.
would valve clearances matter for co?

Is it worth getting a new cat and lambda sensor.. £50 all in
taking the air filter out just before the mot test?
...or any other ideas?

Cheers all.

The checking of the valve clearances is a bit beyond me atm...
I will youtube & google how to do it in a mo' <*** class="inlineimg" title="Smile" src="http://www.106owners.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" />

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/106%...g

I'm not sure how you know when each cylinder is tdc. ,
the camshaft cog has 42 teeth...do I divide it by 4 and mark the cog?
I can get tdc on 1? by locking the cam pulley and the hole in the flywheel...
I'll read up & have another go 2mrw...

That's fairly healthy, but what is the spec? And what result did you get for part 2?

BTW: part 2, chuck a small quantity of oil (egg cup full max) down the plug hole and repeat compression test. If the compression improves, rings are worn, if not valve guides are worn. Obviously you need to compare all figures to the spec for the engine to guage how worn.

However, even if the compression is still good, it could be an oil control ring or two that's causing the oil burning without reducing the compression (much).

The puff of smoke on take off says rings to me. If it were valve guides you'd get the smoke on cold start up and over-run.

Oops,
So sorry Cyd{P} I have just seen this !

I didn't do the 2nd part
... I thought with them all being the same, and 150 it would be ok.
I shall do part 2 in the next couple of days and report back
ps what do you mean about the spec?
Cheers

The latest news,
I've checked the valve clearances...all were fine (0.2 & 0.4)
Tonight, I have taken the o2 sensor out, and check the resistance of the heater
(white wires) 5ohm,
then heated the sensor up, with a reading of 0.8v
s103.photobucket.com/user/liammcl_2006/media/106%2...l

Next up,
I'll test the o2 sensor in the car (I have soldered on 2 takeoff wires)
Do part 2 of the compression test. (I'm guessing engine oil to be used?)
Get some spark plugs (as one or two were looking iffy... I may post a pic of them)
and then take to another garage for another emissions test
(they are charging £5 for it, which I am more than happy with)

It is good fun, ..having a tinker :)

ps If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to comment !
Cheers
Liam

Why start looking after it now? Scrap it and buy another clunker with 9 months MoT.

This is the Lambda sensor voltage whilst connected to the car
(I spliced 2 wires)
Very near the end of the video, after blipping the throttle, it stays at 0.1v for a few seconds, rather than switching quickly back and forth, as it did at idle.
