As I approach the end of my first year's cover with Warranty Direct, who batted away my only claim on very flimsy grounds, I am trying to locate some other insurer to consider as I am not contemplating renewing the WD cover in the liught of my bad experience with this company.

If anyone out there has any recommendations in regard to other insurers of good repute, I would be grateful for any assistance in my search for decent cover. Read more

I suspect that anybody giving a good reference for a warranty/insurance company or product has not had the experience of making a claim. Put the money you're contemplating spending in the bank or premium bonds until you need it for a repair, if you ever do.

My son is having on going issues with Leeds CC regarding 3 parking tickets.

He was issued a temporary parking permit on 1st July for 14 days. On 11th July he got back from work late feeling very ill. He suffers from Migraine. He left the car in the correct area but forgot to display the permit. Result - PCN. He went to the Council to explain the situation and was told that the wardens do not have any means of checking car details against the database so they didn't know he had a valid permit. He explained why he hadn't displayed it and was told that under the circumstances it would probably be waived. It wasn't.... Read more

Yes the insurance company know he is the main driver.
Yes he has business use
Migraines come on in seconds and he does not get an aura with his.

My Panda Fire 999cc engine seems to be quite efficient, economical and appears to suffer no side effects from being a non interference engine.

Why are all engines not designed like this so that valves and pistons do not collide when the cam belt breaks? Read more

Peter.N.

All diesel engines are of the interference type because you couldn't get sufficient compression if they were not. The considerable improvement in petrol engine fuel efficiency dictates that the gas flow be as free as possible - hence the the change.

My Honda Accord (05) was recently refitted with a reconditioned engine for £2,500. It's been five weeks and covered 550 miles.

If all you want is to get the code so you've some idea what you're dealing with, just get yourself a cheap blutooth OBDII interface and dowload Torque Pro to your smart phone.

Hi

I've seen a 2001 Ford Puma which has test until April 2014 and has done 114k. owner says only issue is a wheel bearing which will need doing soon.

Is this worth buying or will it have a bigger underlying issue? thanks Read more

thunderbird

When you test drive it drop into your local garage and get them to check it. If they confirm its just the wheel bearing and you like the car buy it.

Thanks all for your replies.

Yes the only reason I want to remove it is because I think it is contributing to a hot starting problem I am experiencing (otherwise I would just leave it alone)

I have a choice between a 2 year old diesel Astra CDTi SRi and a 3 year old VW Golf Match TDi. The Golf is around £1k extra to buy, is obviously a year older with slightly more mileage but that doesn't concern me

In terms of % depreciation on each, as I'm only looking to keep it a year, would the better retained value on the Golf justify the additional cost to buy now? Am not sure how quickly the Vauxhall would depreciate.... Read more

Golfs are one of the few big sellers that hold onto their value well. Astra sheds values like a tree sheds leaves on a November storm.

But if you can get an Astra cheap it will probably even things out....

I was pesimistic regarding the 1.3 diesel Cdti in the astra, but having had one come through our garage that had just over a hundred thousand on the clock previously a fleet van and well looked after, my partner borrowed it to move some things and hasnt given ot back nearly a year later now with 116k miles and two services of course.

She handed me back the keys to her Jag she was driving and proclaimed she actually prefered the Van, Not something we share an opinion on though....
