Apparently Volkswagen Golfs have been having power failures and one woman has been killed as a result.

An update, the coroner concluded that there was no evidence to suggest systematic failure in the unfortunate driver's manual Golf (a MKV GTi I understand). Suggesting that the likely cause was the use of a mobile phone albeit hands free.

It looks quite good still, but to drive it is very old fashioned.

Fiat really need a new Punto sized car very soon. Read more

I think they are concentrating on investing in areas where there will be greater return such as the premium market with Maserati. To spend a lot developing a new Punto and releasing it into a stagnant home market and lukewarm European one is possibly too risky - but I agree - the current model is feeling increasingly dated - especially when driven alongside the new smaller Panda which is a much better car (let alone the other supermini competition).

Hello all.

I'm hoping to get some advice on purchasing a new used car. I've had a ford fusion for 5 years and have pretty much been trouble free. Problem is I have a need for more space and a bit more comfort.

I've been scratching around and have an idea of what I can afford and what I need. I total around 15000 miles a year with 75% of that being on the M1 or M25.

1.6 - 2.0 Diesel
High Mpg (I know I won't get near the fusion but close is good)
Approx 50000 miles
Manual
Cheap to maintain
5k top budget

I've been looking at the focus cmax as like the shape, style and spec (I will avoid all automatic models after reading on here!). I am however interested to hear if anyone has any other suggestions as I have only ever owned ford cars in my short driving life.

Thanks in advance

Lump.

I read up on the injector problem and it seems to come from town driving and not much else?

I'm covering 65 miles a day on the motorway.

Update:

Been having a look at a few but not found "the one" yet. I have also had a lot at a couple of meriva's which seem quite smart too. Thanks for info about Skoda's. will check them out.

Hi,

I've recently been offered a new position for £38K and option for company car or car allowance [£300]. I don't know how many miles I'll do as I haven't started yet. I'm thinking about buying a BMW Series 3 Coupe 335 petrol as my personal car and I don't mind use it for business purpose at all. I just wanted to ask politely for an advise whether if that's a good idea or not. ... Read more

Hi,
a cat d car should be at least 33% cheaper than a car that's not a cat d. You take a huge risk because you don't know how well the cars been repaired .

You can usually get the service / warranty history from BMW uk customer services ,that would tell you the mileage when a BMW dealer last had the car in for work .

Depending on the age of the car ,you also try a VOSA check ,that will show the cars mileage at its first mot .

So basically if the cars not very cheap ,walk away .In addition the car will always be on the register as a cat d and will always be worth much less .

Some vendors do not warrant mileages as a matter of policy. They want their cars gone when the hammer comes down - no comeback and can't be bothered sorting out what they should warrant and what they shouldn't.

Warranted mileage does not mean it is correct - merely that if the buyer finds concrete evidence it is not very shortly after purchase they can take it back. It is up to the buyer to prove it is wrong.

Is there any garage in Scotland or indeed the UK that uses Electronic Stethoscopes or Steelman Chassis Ears to diagnose noise issues in cars.

I have had a humming noise for a year in my golf and the garage say it is just road noise which is ludicrous, as it's only coming from one tyre.

My car has developed a curious fault, being that the front windscreen wipers start to operate at random while the car is stationary, locked and alarmed (ie. fully immobilised). When the car has been parked for a while inevitably the battery becomes flat with one occasion when the alarm activated (am unsure if this was due to external interference though). Prior to my ownership the car had a new heater matrix fitted so was concerned if the wiring had been disturbed but all appears to be intact. I have reset the BSI but the problem remains. Any suggestions would be most welcome - am getting tired of removing the fuse each time I leave the vehicle !!! Read more

In transit mode before the main fuse was fitted PSA cars had a habit of the wipers giving one sweep when you turned the ignition on, might be worth disconnecting the battery for a while after removing that fuse then putting the fuse back in when reconnected, rebooting it might get it all happy again but no promises.

I'm normally against disconnecting batteries if at all possible (i use jump leads to maintain power during a battery change if all is well), but it was probably disconnected for the new heater matrix anyway.
