Take the offer of £100 and let a garage do the repair that you trust .

You bought a ten year old car with nearly 100k miles ,its nearing the end of its useful life .

Agreed - you said yourself that you were under no illusions, but one illusion may be the expectation that a garage selling 10-year-old cars can (or will) afford (or have the expertise) to fix more than simple basic faults on cars worth £1000 or less. The reason that cars in decent nick at that age are so cheap is that they are likely to need some costly work doing. The seller has probably picked them up at auction and won't have been able to check them thoroughly. If they drive OK and have time on the MoT they should sell.

So buy cheap, but expect to spend on some fixes.

Hi

I bought a new shape C5 (after owning the original for 5 years) and I can't help but feel that there's something amiss with the suspension. What's happening is that instead of the suspension moving up and down from the front axle to the back it seems move from left to right a bit too much creating a bit of seasickness!... Read more

Apologies if this has already been discussed; I was unable to find anything definitive in the forums...

I'm looking to get all 4 wheels refurbished without leaving the car at the workshop (I have some other work I'd like to do, in the meantime). I've seen a lot of talk about the safety of using 4 axle stands and I'm not convinced it's the best option so I've 'acquired' some hefty railway sleepers and considering a combination of them and 2 axle stands.

So, axle stands on the recommended jacking points front or rear; any suggestions on where I could place the sleepers?? Cut to size, of course!

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Some years ago I fitted a full Ford exhaust to my Capri. Used 4 axle stands so that the car was parallel to the ground so that I could get the system to hang correctly.

I'd never used 4 axle stands before and had read some advice saying you shouldn't do so. However, I gave it a go and, I have to agree with Cyd{P}, car was solid as a rock! Needless to say, I gave it several really good tugs before venturing underneath, and I'd certainly advise anyone else contemplating this to do the same....

I think this is OK. The producers aren't pushing a product so much as asking for people to participate. They want to get keen motorists in, so this is a good place to find them.

My trusty RAC 1210 Trafficmaster with its LEDs no longer works. The system is in the process of being turned off after 20 years of reliable info!

Can anyone recommend a good phone app that will provide reliable traffic alerts with minimum data download? Last night the road signs said M6 Long delays and there was hardly a car there when we got to the notified stretch! Something that actually works is needed. Maybe even an up to date satnav with traffic info?... Read more
