Peugeot 406 - Under-bonnet insulation has collapsed - removable? - PBB

Hi,

The heavy duty insultation attached to the underside of my 1998 Peugeot 406 bonnet has lost its shape and collapsed.

From the rub markings on the top of the engine, it appears to be touching the top of the engine when the bonnet is closed.

I cannot see any broken clips - the side ones are intact, but there is no firmness to the insulation itself any more.

I think this may be contributing to a hot-starting problem I am experiencing, so I would like to remove it.

However I am not sure if the insulation is just sound-deadening (I am happy to remove it) or if it protects the bonnet from the heat of the engine.

Does anyone know its primary purpose, and whether it can be removed?

Thanks

Sorry I forgot to say - its a 2.0 petrol

I don't (think) I can glue it to the underside of the bonnet. It wasn't previously glued (held on with plastic rivets) and I think its condition would preclude anything adhering to it now.

Would you be able to attach a sheet of supporting chicken-wire mesh to the fixings or maybe self tapping screws and washers at the sides of the bonnet?

I would put money on it being just for sound insulation. But only by analogy with Pug 205s: I think only the 1.6 and 1.9 petrol engines had underbonnet insulation. The uninsulated bonnets get pretty warm, but the sun can do that too.

If the stuff is flopping onto the engine, probably safer to remove it. Though many years ago I used to keep a heavy blanket under the bonnet of my Morris 1100 during the Canadian winter ....

If you removed it, I think you'd be peed off in no time with the noise level.

These insulation pads are primarily for sound insulation. You can safely remove it if you feel you must, but may have to put up with increased cabin noise. There will defo be increased external noise.

Is the rubbing causing a problem? Why not just leave it?

You'd never glue it into place without getting hold of some serious temperature resistant adhesive. Nothing on the shelves of any of the DIY stores would do the job.

Thanks all for your replies.

Yes the only reason I want to remove it is because I think it is contributing to a hot starting problem I am experiencing (otherwise I would just leave it alone)

Cheers
