Astra vs Golf - retained value? - Dingle232

I have a choice between a 2 year old diesel Astra CDTi SRi and a 3 year old VW Golf Match TDi. The Golf is around £1k extra to buy, is obviously a year older with slightly more mileage but that doesn't concern me

In terms of % depreciation on each, as I'm only looking to keep it a year, would the better retained value on the Golf justify the additional cost to buy now? Am not sure how quickly the Vauxhall would depreciate.

I have never had an Astra before - what's the general opinion on them and their diesel engines?

Many thanks in advance.

If secondhand car buyers read HJ's What's Bad section in respect of these 2 cars, then the Astra would win hands down in terms of depreciation.

Golfs are one of the few big sellers that hold onto their value well. Astra sheds values like a tree sheds leaves on a November storm.

But if you can get an Astra cheap it will probably even things out.

At the end of the day the Golf will always be easier to sell thus most dealers will be keener to take it off your hands.

Personally I would buy a Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30, midling depreciation but you still have a big chunk of warranty left to protect you from big bills for several years.
