My 2007 VW Golf GT has developed a problem when idling. When the car is at a standstill and in neutral the idle speed willl suddenly drop from its normal idle speed, judder and then rev up to approx 1000rpm and back to normal again. It does not seem to matter whether the car is cold or at normal running temperature. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Read more

'Summary - don't buy an extended warranty from a dealer. Buy elsewhere.'

I recently observed a car being violently ‘kerbed’ by a young couple. The car was travelling down a straight road by a pub that was the only building for several hundred metres on either side. The pub car-park was next to the pub with kerbs for the footpath leading into car-park. The car turned to park on the footpath using the turnoff to the car-park but going too fast. The near-side front wheel bounced high as it ran onto the kerb and the car turned off the footpath back onto the road. When on the road the front wheels turned again to the kerb and met it. I got the impression that the friction on the wheel tugged the steering wheel from the driver’s hands and the car went back again onto the footpath and stopped. There was a puff of blue smoke and a young woman leaned from the driver’s door. A young man climbed out from the passenger door and looked under the front of the car.
I asked my wife had she observed the event, but her attention had been distracted by a hub cap bowling by us and down the road.... Read more

The Ford dealer repaired the leaking fuel pipe on my first Fiesta 1.4Tdci under warranty. As I drove away, I noticed the fuel gauge going down rapidly. The rear-view mirror showed a trail of diesel on the road behing my car. I just got back to the dealer before the tank ran dry, and dumped the rest of the fuel on his car park.
That was a few years ago and I assumed that, since there are numerous reports all over the Internet of leaking fuel pipes on this model, that Ford had improved the quality of the pipes by now. Perhaps a bad batch of pipes has found its way into Ford's cars? I wonder if we'll see more reports?...

And thanks to you, ORB, for sharing that with us.
Hi, I've owned my car from 6k on the clock and it has always had a mild wheel wobble at 70mph. I've had all wheels balanced and subframe aligned, and now with 40k it is milder than it originally was. However, recently I have noticed a wobbling sound coming from the rear as soon as you go above 30mph. I've had the wheel bearings checked as this is what it sounds like but I was told the rear tyres have both worn unevenly. They're still the factory standard dunlops as I've changed the fronts to avons. Any advice or recomendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryan Read more

Please can anyone advise what they think would be the best car/s to buy, we have 1 child plus 1 on the way and need a family car, it will mainly be driven locally plus on average about 50 miles on the motorway every week. We have a budget of between £4-5,000. Any advice appreciated? Read more
Mondeo or Zafira for best value, space and cheap to run. I know someone who bought a 4 year old Zafira 1.6 petrol for 6 years as his family car. Serviced it 3 times, didn't get the belt done despite my advice and had new discs and pads and nothing whatever went wrong with it apart from it used a bit of oil and when he trded it in it was losing a bit of coolant. I borrowed it a few times (for the 7 seats) and thought it went well for a 1.6 and was surprisingly refined on the motorway. I'd have a 2 litre petrol Mondeo myself at that price point as the high VED rates have been hurting their used price for a few years now and they drive so well.
I'm travelling around Europe for a while, and I'd like to buy a car in Germany.

Yes you can put it on export plates but what then the cost to re register it in the UK plus the cost of a car in Germany (far dearer than the UK)much cheaper to rent one.

Many thanks will give it a try.
