Insurance to buy & drive a German car, from UK - fooey

I'm travelling around Europe for a while, and I'd like to buy a car in Germany.

I'm still resident in the UK.

I have no car insurance in the UK now, and haven't had for a year or two.

I can't find any obvious way to be able to buy and insure a car in Germany. The German insurance companies I've contacted need me to be resident in Germany.

Anyone know how I can get insured?

Cheers,

flo

You are unlikely to get insurance for a car in a country you do not reside in unless its a rental car.

Your best bet is probably to buy a LHD car in the Uk and insure it here. However most policies only allow a limited time, often around 30 days, for cover abroad.

Check with a few of the smaller insurance brokers who may be more willing to do the research for you.

Impossible unless you have a registered address not easy to get, in Germany plates are issued to you personally you will also need a German bank account to pay road tax. There are ways round it you need to know a German citizen who is willing to buy a car and insure it any driver not something I would advocate.

just do a web search on "short term car hire" and ring up the various companies which offer cover for a few days (designed for people taking a friends car on holiday or whatever) i am sure one of them would cover you, buy enough cover to bring the car back to uk then buy a normal policy here

If it was for up to 5 days, there is a system in Germany whereby you can get register it, get a licence plate, tax, and insure it for around €120. I live in Austria and had to get a temporary German registration for my (already owned) car. I assume that you could buy a car and use this system. Whether you can repeat this process ad infinitum I'm not sure, and even if you could, you'd need to arrange to be in Germany every 5 days! Perhaps Collos would know about this?

Yes you can put it on export plates but what then the cost to re register it in the UK plus the cost of a car in Germany (far dearer than the UK)much cheaper to rent one.
