I am trying to pin down a new car for my wife. Must be a small crossover with 4WD (lot of snow up here), diesel, low Co2, high MPG and (this is the hard part) automatic. Cost to be under £20k. We also will live up quite a steep hill so will need a reasonable amount of power

I have a 2004 Peugeot 307 XSI HD Estate and everytime i put the AC on, it starts working and cools down nicely, but then after about a minute it stop working completely.
After waiting for about 2 minutes, it comes back on again at the same fan speed it went off at. If I leave it on a really slow fan speed, which you can hardly feel it, then the AC seems to work properly and doesn't stop, but I can't turn it up any higher?
It feels cold enough when it does work, but not much help when you have 3 kids in the car and 2 adults to cool down in this heat?!
Does it need a re-gas or could there be a leak or even maybe electrical issues?!
It's having an MOT on Tuesday (23rd July) so I didn't know whether I could get it checked out at the same time?
Thanks in advance.

Do you mean there is no fan speed or no cooling effect?Different problems.
My 1996 2.5 diesel transit won’t start after removing the battery 6 months ago and putting the van in storage, I have checked all the obvious things battery fuses etc, but the problem persists, I suspect it is something to do with the ford pats immobilizer as I get nothing other than a click from the ignition relay when I turn the key, and the warning light comes on the dashboard, there are no other noises, and I can’t hear the fuel pump whirring like it usually does, is it possible for the immobilizer to lose the code from its memory due to the battery being removed for a long time I have tried starting it with the red master key but it’s still the same.... Check the starter motor. Has it got 12v on the large terminal with the thick cable from the battery.
When you turn the key to the start position is there 12v on the small terminal on the starter motor. ...
My partners diesel A Class cuts out intermittently, but usually when accelerating.I took it to a Mercedes garage who replaced the fuel filter and pipes attached. This did not cure the problem as air bubbles could still be seen. They now want to remove the manifold at a cost of £400 to access some fuel pipes to see if there is a leek,is this correct. There is a slight smell of diesl fumes from the front of the car.Any ideas please. I thought ASDA sold fuel at the same price in all its stores? Read more
I'm like Dr Zoidberg and always assumed that all Asda fuel was the same price no matter where you bought it... They certainly used to make this an issue when they'd announce a price cut comparing it to other supermarkets such as Tesco or Morrison where prices varied by store.
You can monitor tyre pressures even while you drive if you have a tyre pressure monitoring system. Some systems also measure tyre temperature so they warn you if a tyre is getting overstressed and in danger of a blowout. Read more
Whilst going around the country I see (and drive) quite a lot of cars. One thing that intrigues me is the number of older vehicles on the road which are still running.
[My criterion for defining an older vehicle is that it would predate the introduction of the new registration number format in 2001].... Read more
Until 8 years ago, the only place to get any real Hyundai parts (by real I mean anything more than an air filter/oil filter) was through the main dealers.
Hyundai UK made a pretty penny charging astronomical prices for parts and because they didnt sell in enough volume, the protest from owners never made enough noise.
Around 7/8 years ago, someone had the bright idea to import Hyundai copy parts from the USA and guess what, they where often half if not a third of the mian dealer price.
Then a few years ago when Hyundai sales really went up, the main car part manufacturers took note and the parts are freely available.
Needless to say, Hyundai cars at the start of the 21st century where often scrapped at 9/10 years of old despite only needing minor parts.
Hyundais also use to suffer from lots of surface rust on bolts/brackets/screws/threads/wiper arms/etc but they could often be replaced cheapily.
Non savvy owners would mistakingly consider the car to be finished.
Hi there, this is my first post so please bear with me - apologies if I have started this thread in the wrong place or duplicated another post.
So my story goes like this... I'm looking to buy a used VW Golf. I'll give you a little background on myself which will hopefully explain why I need your help!
I'm 25, female and very short. 4'11 to be precise. Car dealers spot me, see me coming and add an extra £1000 on, no doubt. When I was 18 I bought a Renault Clio (used) 1.2 for £6,000. Plus £2,000 for the privilege of a finance option. I didn't even query it - I just walked in and signed on the dotted line. Many years later, after finally paying it off and being in a good financial position, I'm looking to upgrade.
I have done some research and the car I'm going to go for is definitely a Golf. I want a bigger engine, a bigger car and a relatively good deal. There are just so many models out there to choose from. I now feel confident walking into a dealership and haggling, as I'll be paying cash in full. What I'd ideally like to do is walk in knowing the exact model which is right for me, so as not to get sucked in.
What I'm looking for is:
Around 2-3 years old
Any sized engine up to 2.0
Diesel
5 doors
Manual
Good fuel economy
Low/no road tax - I am aware that some models after '09 fall into this bracket
I do around 20,000 miles a year which is quite high, so I'm looking for something quite economical. I wouldn't rule out a sports version if the price was right though!
To be honest, I am baffled by choice, which often leads to me getting so frustrated about not being able to make a decision that I take the first thing that comes along.
I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could recommend a model type around which I could base my purchase. Thanks for reading my ramble!

If you are anywhere near mid-Cheshire, have a look at Fords of Winsford - about the best and most user-friendly car supermarket. My daughter got her Golf Plus there several years ago for a good price and still has it.

I propose introducing a fixed penalty charge for 'wasting police time'.
That's the sort of simplistic knee-jerk reaction befitting of a poilitician. The real time wasters do not consider themselves as such and would not be deterred....

Thunderbird, you are dicing with death !!
One of my in-laws bought a car very cheaply from a husband who bought the car for his wife in the wrong shade of blue. She made his life miserable until he could afford to replace it. Be careful of that !
