hi, i have just purchased a secondhand van 3 days ago, i have drove it 2 times, the first time it stopped and wouldnt start, called rac and they said it was an electrical problem, after a few hrs he fixed it, the problem was air intake hadnt been fitted correctly and had chaffed the wires. Day 2 van broke down again, this time all the oil fell on the floor, called rac and they plugged it in, 18 different fault codes came up including glow plugs, egr valve, cam shaft sensor, timing to name a few, garage are saying its not there fault but are willing to go 50/50 on repairs, engine and gearbox need taking out to fix the most severe faults, i dont think this is fair after 2 days of buying it, what are my rights? Hi I currently do about 35k miles a year and get a car allowance of £320 a month after tax plus 20p a mile fuel allowance.
The allowance stipulates the car must be less than 5 years old and you get paid more the lower the emissions. I currently run a Hyundai I30 that is coming up to five years old and not really big enough.
I need a reliable estate but max I can only pay is 5k plus px on the Hyundai.
Any advice appreciated. Read more
>>>£320 a month on a business lease could get something tasty surely.
Regrettably no. Apart from the fact that a business lease isn't available to a private person. at 35k a year a PCP would put the OP in something small in body and small in engine or many just wouldn't bother quoting beyond 2 years and after that it gets very very expensive. This has been my dilemma over many years. An attractive looking lease rate is usually based on 10k miles p.a. which is just an eye catching headline figure. Also funding your own car if you factor in depreciation and finance costs, £320 a month doesn't get you into anything big, decent or recent ie 2 or 3 years. Factor in two or three services a year including a big one and 2 cambelt changes in 3 years. So you're likely to end up looking for a 3 to 4 year old high'ish mileage motor because realistically thats all £320 a month plus a notional profit on mileage covers you for. IMO it's unfair for a company to pay that and expect you to find a car that they and you agree are suitable. If you do that mileage promoting the business, they should stump up for a decent company car. Obviously if the job pays very well then you can take a view and offset the nice to have wages against the car costs but in practice that isn't how it works.
Been looking about at a different sort of car and like the look of the 2.5T Mondeo but for some reason the turbo bit puts me off.
A turbo diesel sounds right, turbos should be on diesel engines but for some reason turbo petrol doesn't sound right.... Read more
QUOTE:..""I wouldn't describe to 5 pot as gruff-it has even firing intervals and the crank assembly is reasonably well balanced-way better than a four I was surprised at how smooth it is. It's just the consumption...""
I suppose a 5-cylinder engine is OK if you can live with something that sounds like a misfiring six!
I had some injector problems, I cleaned the injectors which made the car run rough and stalled inless revving the engine. I tried the iyalian service which produced a loud ticking noise which will not go.

From your description and taking the history into account I would say you have a faulty injector but this engine and electronics are a law unto themselves.
My 2CV which has been stood for a couple of years is refusing to start. The battery is a bit duff, but I've attached a Booster/charger but will this supply enough juice if the battery is completely kapput?
I thought initially that the starter motor had seized as it didn't sound like it was turning over at all, but after trying to start it with the starting handle (don't you love old cars!) I realised that the starter motor was turning the engine over, but just very slowly.... Read more
A booster would have to supply at least a couple of hundred amps to be able to start the car from it.
A wee while ago I was in an accident, in which another motorist lost control and collided with my car.
The repairs required include new doors, front wing, bumper, windscreen and A pillar, and my insurer has approved the repairer's estimate.... Read more
( Out of interest would a repair come up on an HPI check? The car has not been written off. )
HPI normally only shows damaged cars that are beyond economical repair .As the insurance company is repairing yours it shouldn't show on HPI .
Your advice please for a large family car, from a novice car purchaser!
We are 2 adults, 2 under 5's, currently driving a 14 year old Golf. Love this car as it is so reliable, but noisy, old, takes ages to defrost in the winter...
We need more boot space and general space in the car, plus fancy something newer, especially as we travel to visit family on round 250mile trips a few times a year and want to go camping in France this summer, with all our camping gear. Realise we will still use the roof box for holidays.
What would you suggest on a budget of £7k? We want this car for the next 5 years at least. And something economical. Toyota Avensis? Hyundai i30? The i40 seems to be out of our price range, as does a Mondeo estate and Passat estate.
Have looked at a Mazda5; read good reviews, within our price range, but boot space with rear sets folded down seemed smaller than I had hoped, so maybe an estate is better for us.
And what kind of age car, mileage should I be looking for?
Thank you!

You're comparing cars from two different market segments - the i30 is in the C-segment (Golf/Focus size) and the Avensis from the D segment (Passat/Mondeo size).
If you want something i30 sized but with bigger boot, you have the Golf, Seat Leon, Toyota Auris, etc. The Skoda Octavia, although in the C-segment class, has a very large boot in hatchback form....

This car will have a pre-engaged starter, inertia starters went out years before it was made. The solenoid also throws the pinion into the ring gear.
It seems the ring gear's got stripped teeth, or the pinion's failing to fully engage....
planning on buying a c5 2001 diesel done only 107k and the cap keeps coming off the expansion tank but for some reason it feels loose when screwing it down it seems to just keep screwing down then clicks when it gets to a certain point then goes loose again any ideas should i just get a new water bottle possible knackered bottle ?? any ideas Read more
The water will not boil with the cap off unless the engine is worked hard, the presuration is to allow it to run above boiling point should the necessity occur.

Hi,
I'm almost sure that that the sale of goods act doesn't apply in business to business sales .
So even if the seller is a builder or something similar ,and he's buying the van from a garage for use in his business ,then the soga doesn't apply .
As I said I'm only 99% certain ,if anybody can confirm that it would be interesting to know
