Peugeot 308 SW - Loss of value following accident repairs - Pyranha

A wee while ago I was in an accident, in which another motorist lost control and collided with my car.

The repairs required include new doors, front wing, bumper, windscreen and A pillar, and my insurer has approved the repairer's estimate.

My main concern is the replacement of the A pillar - as this is structural, will it have an effect on the future value of the car? If it will, how would I go about assessing the amount of this loss? Any thoughts/tips?

If the A-pillar can't be replaced, to retain the structural integrity, the car would have been a write-off.

The whole point of insurance funded repairs is to repair the car to the same condition as pre-accident - unless you've grounds for alleging an incompetent repair then you'll have to accept that the insurers liability is ended, whether it's 3rd party or your insurer that's paying.

Are you sure they are replacing the A pillar and not just pulling out some damage or putting a skin on it? That seems too structural to be replaced IMO but anyway...

The thing is that, while all repairs will done correctly and by trained and competant people (usually....bodyshops vary wildly and some are downright shocking) the cars value will always be affected by repairs like that. If people HPi and it appears for example. To the vast majority of people who would buy it, it will be worth less...no getting around it unfortunately. If it doesnt appear on checks, and buyers arent told, its a grey area of honesty frankly! The insurance company will not compensate you for the difference in value between yours and an unrepaired example because they believe it will have been corrected to 100% standard.

My dad sold a Carlton years ago when it was 4 years old because of similar damage, the car never 'felt' right afterwards.

It could be vulnerable to corrosion.

I've never seen a repaired car that hasn't rotted as a result. The heat from welding removes any protection from the inside of box sections (A pillar) that can't be replaced to the same level as a whole body shell that's been dipped in primer or similar compound.

A very good point bathtub tom, and I wouldnt want to have a crash in a car with a replacement windcreen pillar!

I think 5th gear did a crash test of 2 Focuses, one repaired and one original, very interesting viewing, I think we all can guess the result!

The repairer's quote included the A pillar, and I could see a bit of damage where the wing was knocked off. I have no doubt that the repairs will be adequate but, as suggested, some people would be out off by a repaired car. Out of interest would a repair come up on an HPI check? The car has not been written off.

This is turning into something of a saga as it took over three months to get the car back from the Procurator Fiscal, and the 3rd party's insurer will not admit liability until the PF report is available (no indication from PF when that might be).

Once liability is accepted, I want to get the claim settled as quickly as I can, partly because I am already out of pocket . . .

HPI normally only shows damaged cars that are beyond economical repair .As the insurance company is repairing yours it shouldn't show on HPI .
