Moved to Technical.

If you haven't bought the car yet, assuming the rest of the car is sound, make your purchase conditional on the seller replacing the bottle and cap.

If you have pressure building in the system and its blowing the water out it probably will be the head gasket, even if the cap doesn't fit it still shouldn't be loosing water. If it will drive OK without loosing with the cap off then the gasket should be OK.

The car needs a pressurised cooling system to not overheat and loose water! If the cap is faulty or loose, the car will not be able to run at its operating temperature and higher as water will simply expand so much it comes out of the cap, or boil off.

Try the cheap stuff first, cap and bottle before you rip the engine apart.

From your description it sounds like the cap's been cross threaded or over tightened at some time and damaged the thread.

Perhaps a scrapyard replacement? I should imagine the main dealer price would be horrific.

The water will not boil with the cap off unless the engine is worked hard, the presuration is to allow it to run above boiling point should the necessity occur.
