Car cut out when driving. When I tried to restart it,both the green and red lights came on together and won't start.

Mechanic and auto-electrician have had a look at it,no mechanical faults showing on diagnostics.... Read more

Happy Blue!

Been driving my father's car around this week. Its a 2.5 year old Daihatsu Sirion Automatic with only 8,800miles on it. It drives really well, but starting is not quite as instant as it once was. I intend to consider the battery as well, but I wonder if it could do with some form of cleaning out of the fuel system and cylinder heads given its use for mainly short cold journeys. As a retired person his longest regular trip is delivering 'meals on wheels' for the old folk - he is 78!

Any recommendations for some treatment fluid that could work. Or shoud I simply top it up with Shell V-Power?... Read more

If he is doing meals on wheels deliveries he is probably doing frequent starts with short runs, this will soon deplete the battery, try putting it on trickle charge overnight

Go with insurance, should end up less than two grand, and technically you have to inform them of the accident anyway.......so you will be penalised for it in any case

Ah, but as you go up the hill, the air density reduces which reduces the aerodynamic drag .......... go faster over hills and not waste fuel!

I need help with the timing on my Scenic. Do you set it up front to back? Also what is the timing order. I have changed all the valves, set it up to the book.I think the timing is out of order as there is no compression to fire. Read more

On Renaults,no 1 cylinder is gearbox end.If you have the crankshaft locking pin engaged and the rear of the camshafts locked with the tool, then I can really see a problem.hth

I wonder if anyone could give me some advice on which used car to buy? I have £5500ish to spend, do 15,000+ miles a year, mix of town and motorway, need an estate for kids and dog and everything else that seems to travel with us. I have had a good look around auto trader and local car supermarket, and went to a car auction at Bruntingthorpe this morning but I just don't seem to be getting much for my money. Low running costs are important to me.

I had been looking at Focus Estates, I can get a 2008 1.6tdci with 80,000 on clock, or a V50 2005 with around 60,000 on clock. I have read on here the sage of diesels repair costs and am now very hesitant to go for these though. The difference in fuel and tax costs of diesel to petrol for me would be about £700 a year though by my calculations, in favour of diesel obviously.... Read more

Toyota Avensis would be very high on my list. 1.8 petrol, probably a 2007MY. That engine is known to be very economical for a petrol and could reduce that £700 gap you mention. Reliable, spacious, comfy, refined cruiser.
