Hi all
I need to find a replacement car for my mother in law who's just written her car off .
Budget wise it needs to be in the region of £12 £13 k,either new or nearly new .
It needs to be a smallish petrol automatic ,with a high driving position ,she's in her 80s and surprisingly still enjoys driving .But has difficulty getting out of a conventional car . The insurance company have loaned her a 2012 fiesta auto which seems a good little car to drive ,but its seating position is to low .
Her existing car was a Suzuki sx4 auto which had an ideal driving position and was easy to get in and out of ,which we could buy again ,but we will look at alternatives .
Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi I drove my 1.6 8V T reg astra through a very deep puddle and have had problems since.
The engine at idle is roughly 5000 rpm now and my mechanic friend is not sure what is wrong with it. The puddle was as deep as the wheels and I think water must have gone into the exhaust and knakered that as well. When I shake the back box it sounds like a biscuit in a biscuit tin. My freind has disconnected one of the air valves and the o2 sensor to bring the revs down to roughly 1500 at idle. My freind has allready checked the majority of the sensors and pipes ect in the enigneer and can find nothing obviouse. He has a fault reader which he has used on my car before but since going through the puddle it will not register any faults, but the engine managment light is on.
My question is does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or what i should try replacing first?
Thanks for any help Read more

Bought a focus form a dealer.Car sold as "cat d due to seats and wheels being stolen".
Having had car for 2 weeks my local ford garage during service noticed airbag light didnt come on so it was booked in for them to look at it.They told me airbags wernt working due to airbag module being full of data and seats not being wired up.They fixed problems but airbag light still wasnt working.Took car to local auto electrician and he found airbag led was missing.... I think that if you bought it as a "cat d due to seats and wheels being stolen" with documentation evidence of this only, then you may have a case.
If you bought it as just a cat D????
Hi, I am new to the forum but have been following various discussions over the years and very much enjoyed it.
I have a query I hope a few members may have an opinion on.... Read more
Get a couple of estimates to remedy the faults before deciding. There is nothing more sickening than seeing your old car in good condition after you gave it away cruising down the road. The fact is as soon as you change cars the same old problem of ageing starts again.

I opened my car with the remote on Boxing Day only to find a flat main battery. AA installed a new one and everything was working fine. I drove the car a few times, but on 9 Jan when I went to the car I found the remote key fob did not work at all. AA came out again and said there had been a complete drain-down; recharged battery but could not resynch key fob. I've tried various methods suggested to me today to get back to remote, without success. What do you suggest I do? Should I disconnect main battery again?
I am perplexed as to why my radio continues to work after such a drain-down (AND I now discover that I do not have & never did have the radio security code), but the key fob does not ! How should I proceed please? Read more
Yes, I have tried that several times. It has been suggested that the inbuilt SatNav may be jamming things up after the battery drain-down episode.
Many of you will have ridden bkies once, and more seem to be here than in Bikers' Cafe.
Do bikers guse winter tyres? Presumably they're even "more essential" than on cars, even assuming bikes aren't used in ice or snow, but simply in lower temperatures. Read more
If you take a look at how many different tyres they use on racing cars, this should answer your question.Using "slicks" in bad weather would be asking for trouble, using "Knobblies" on tarmac roads you would be riding on the "corners"of the tyre,no grip.
A decent tread pattern would be advisable for winter use....
I'm thinking about looking at a 2001 Merc E320CDi estate with a view to purchasing. HJ's advice, in capital letters, is to CHECK THE GLOWPLUGS.
My question is, how does one check a glowplug, and what is one looking for? I'll look for evidence of them having been changed in the car's invoice history, but on a physical level how on Earth would one go about doing this on a used car forecourt? Read more
Most Merc diesel engines are common rail from around 1998.I think you will find the clue is in the title;Common (rail) Diesel Injection.hth
hi i have a expert 2.0 hdi the mil light kept coming on n off. so i change the fuel filter (seamans) and once i dont that all hell broke lose. now my cab has many different codes. starts up everytime idle no problems drives well but once you are up to speed say in 4th or 5th take your foot of the power then try to reapply engine has cut out apply clutch cabs out cold have to take key out of ignition to get it restarted as if you dont will never start. also when in idle when you turn cab off it over runs 2/3secs but if u have small revs cuts out staight away. also if u hold the revs at 2000 after 5 secs will rev itself up as if you have applied the power hard. i have checked the wiring and found some dodgy wires replace no different changed the filter again nothing. changed the fuel rail sensor nope changed the fuel temperature sensor nope. peugeot say they think its sucking in air from somewhere??? live data showed idle at 298 and then 1000 but is in limp mode. then 1300 out of limp. codes where for feul pressor sensor/fuel temperature/air flow meter/ feul regulator and clutch sensor. HELPPPPPPP only way to drive cab is to drop the cluth each time u need to coast.

I'm about to buy a 2001 X Mk3 Mondeo, right hand drive and UK registered, however when I did a HPI it came up as a 'Ford 12M 15M'.
I remember Taunus (Ford of Germany) did a range known as the M from 1952 until around 1971 but the Taunus name ceased to be used in 1994.... Read more
The 12M/15M were front wheel drive and were in production at the same time as the Mk.1 Cortina-larger "M" range were RWD and were from 1.8 to 2.6 litre. and were replaced by the Granada. There was also a South African version of th "M" range fitted with "Essex" engines upto and including the three litre.

Most people don't realise how tight the auto industries margings are. They think dealers are creaming it off at 200% margins - mostly from metallic paint alone - and we're all being ripped off. Now once upon a time that was true, cars were stupidly overpriced in Britain because we put the steering wheel on the correct side.
