All - Winter tyres on motor bikes? - Ed V

Many of you will have ridden bkies once, and more seem to be here than in Bikers' Cafe.

Do bikers guse winter tyres? Presumably they're even "more essential" than on cars, even assuming bikes aren't used in ice or snow, but simply in lower temperatures.

I'm not aware that winter tyres are even available for bikes ... of course you can get various off-road and hybrid tread patterns.

Winter tyres are not made for for motorcycles as such, but some tyres work better in the winter than others.

Some good reviews of tyres for bikes here:-

Try about 2 psi less pressure than standard to increase the contact patch area and help the tyre to warm up quicker, unless of course you are riding heavily loaded with a pillion etc.

If you take a look at how many different tyres they use on racing cars, this should answer your question.Using "slicks" in bad weather would be asking for trouble, using "Knobblies" on tarmac roads you would be riding on the "corners"of the tyre,no grip.

A decent tread pattern would be advisable for winter use.

I shouldnt imagine "superbikes" have much of a variation in tyre types, they depend on "cling rubber" and have a raparound tread, which is why they wear out so quickly.
