fuzzled

I have a 5 year old mondeo 1.8 TDCI which has only done 80k miles and has a cracked piston. To repair it by putting in a new engine would be £4500, and a second hand engine would be about £1000 cheaper! Basically this car is scrap as the cost to repair is more than the car is worth! Please be aware that a leaky injector lead to this, and seeing as these cars are reknown for this problem! Dont buy this car!! Read more

Some early 2.0 TDCI Mondeo's had a problem with melting pistons caused by the fuel filter allowing dirt through to the injectors which caused the injectors to spray fuel in an unsuitable patter. But that was solved in 2002 by changing the fuel filter spec (service recall) at the first service. A cracked piston is very different to a melted one though and the damage was much more widespread.

If its only cracked and no other damage has been done a new piston should sort, if Ford sell such things today.

Hi All,

I have recently developed a fault with my 2008 TDCI focus. The fault seems to be if I am cruising at about 50+ in 5th gear and i try to accelerate there is hesitation and eventually the car will shudder/kangaroo! This happens at about 2500rpm +..... I then have to back off and continue at the speed i was going.... Read more

If its not the bonnet catch as above try closing all the air vents in the car the volumetric sensors when old become more sensitive and this time of the year you have a greater difference in mean air temp and the temp in the car which causes the sensors to think their is some movement and the alarm goes off.

I am not surprised to see Volkswagen Group motors appearing towards the end of the reliability list. Their reliability is over-hyped. A few years ago the turbo chargers failed on my cousin's Passat a few months after the manufacturer warranty ran out. The fix was so costly he decided to get rid of it and moved back to Mercedes Benz.

Last summer the DSG gearbox on my uncle's four years old Passat packed up. After spending good part of two grands on fixing it he decided to keep it. From these two examples in my family it appears Volkswagen makes cars to last three years only. They develop some expensive problem soon after the warranty runs out.
Couldn't be better for Volkswagen though. They make money selling them. Then they make money fixing them. Makes awful lot of sense in the business world, I guess. Read more

Flawed article by an Insurer - they make league tables out of their 50,000 cars............there are 20+million and the insurer's customers and their cars cannot be representative of cars in general.

That's some good data. I did say that a properly engineered alloy wheel had the potential to be lighter-your wheels seem to fit that catagory. But most series production ones you'll find on cars are for cosmetic purposes.

Aluminium has a density about a 1/3 of that of ferrous alloys, but the castings have to much thicker than that of steel because the yield and fatigue strength are much lower. The main culprit of weight in wheels is not the material itself but the desire to replace tyre inches with metal inches. Aluminium has a low density-air has a lower density still!...
