Hi,

Recently, I've noticed the needles on ALL the gauges on the car's dashboard go to the 'extremities' [i.e. 180mph or whatever] before quickly settling back down to the normal positions [i.e. half-full on the fuel gauge, 0mph etc] whenever I start the car.... Read more

V Dissapointed in Audi

can not believe Audi's attitude towrads this problem - a complete re design of the pump and balancer shaft which means you need a new sump too but they are not holding their hands up to take ownership - perhaps they will if enough noise is made !

To make matters worse, the key part is on back order with no deleivery date ! There is one on back order from early October - My wife broke down early in January, I have had a few discussions with Audi but can only gain a loan car whislt we wait if they carry out the repair at £700-800 more ! It's c£1500 just for the parts on this job, outside of the c10 hours labour - the car has full service history and just over 40,000 miles - hardly over worked !... Read more

I do hope so; his experrise is invaluable. He last posted in June so I trust he hasn't gone far away.

I think 659 FBE was the number of his first car - a good old Lincolnshire registration.

Hi, I recently had trouble starting my vw golf 2001 1.6 mk4 on a very hot (35C) day. It made a loud grinding noise. I called road side assistance and by the time they got out, the problem had stopped. this happened a few more times on very hot days until the car stopped turning over all together. I took the car to the mechanic to get the starter motor replaced. the starter motor was totally stuffed. the mechanic said he has seen this happen before so he put a relay in as well as a new starter motor. there was a small amount of damage done to the ring gear resulting in a small noise upon starting. he assured me that this will not result in any extra issues. however, on another hot day the car made the grinding noise again. the noise subsided once the car had time to cool down from the suns heat. the car works fine in normal temperatures. it is only on hot days that the noise seems to appear. any suggestions?

Not heard of high temperature causing this before, must be peculiar to Golf starters. What's happening is that the starter gear is not fully engaging with the flywheel ring and slipping which will damage both the starter and the flywheel. Under normal circumstances this can't happen as the current to the motor shouldn't be switched on until the gears are in mesh, so I would suspect a faulty starter again unless the damage to the flywheel is considerable.

The passenger side windscreen wiper does a single wipe occassionally when the doors are unlocked. Yesterday it did it after the doors had been unlocked for some time but when the driver's side door was opened. Does anyone know the cause/fix?

As it's the lower arm when it does happen the blade catches on thge upper blade and is torn off, somethimnes requiring a new blade. Have tried changing to the spare remote but same happens with that.... Read more

Interesting link McP.

Lots of PSA group cars of this era would perform one single sweep of the wipers when in delivery mode when the ingition was turned on...ie before the main fuse is put in at PDI, we'd have to be careful if we started one during severe weather if the wipers were frozen to the screen....

When we're driving along on a main road, say 60/70 mph auto box in its highest gear, if we accelerate to overtake a car, or to go up a hill, the engine suddenly revs high and loses power and the engine management light comes on and it goes into limp mode. You have to stop, turn engine off and then on to reset. Anyone know why? Is this just an over enthusiastic engine protection thing or is it more sinister? Read more

Two options. Either the vacuum hose to the turbo is kinked, or the EGR is clogged.

The vacuum host is easy to check, it normally kinks where the hose bends round the rocker cover, underneath the plastic engine cover on the left hand side of the engine. Just lift the pipe out of the channel it'll be in, and let it lie across the rocker cover. ...

Clearly angling doesn't work with SWMBO!

So if your Avensis isn't exactly pristine, you wouldn't get much for it: so best to keep it untl it gets expensive, then look for as new a Fabia, Corolla/Auris, Focus or Mazda 2 you can get within budget. Or a Yaris 1.3 if your fishing tackle will fit into it: economical and more fun to drive than the Corolla/Auris.

Would not have thought that 40mpg from a petrol is poor economy (it is petrol isn't it?).

Also 40mpg driving at 10 miles per day will improve if you are doing 90 miles per day (presumably a lot of these miles are on fast A roads or motorways). So I have a foot in either camp between Thunderbird and Avant. I can see both sides. ...
